- Dont know what channel is best to use on GMRS? I explain it, scientifically, with the calculations to back it up. I also clear up the Ginger VS Mary Ann debate.

Not sure if promoting the use of Channel 16 as a GMRS chatter channel is a particulary great idea. In Marine radio it is the worldwide distress channel: Yes GMRS is a different service, but this smells like a bad habit to adopt when there are other options.
I guess if when you are on your boat and using a marine radio you get confused and think you are off-road, using a GMRS radio, this could be a problem. I know that happens to me all the time because of how similar being on a boat is to being in a 4WD vehicle..
Marine channel 16 is also the calling/hailing channel. So I don’t see much difference there. You make a contact on 16 and then you take you conversation to another channel.
@@buzz25 The difference is that 16 is actively monitored by the US Coast Guard and it is an offence to misue the channel.
I wish I could like NotARubicon’s response to this more than once.
So what about CB channel 16?
Mary Ann all the way!
Yep !
No not Mary Ann, or Ginger......Mary Ann AND Ginger ftw baby !
@@ITILII I like your style but I think your response would probably get put in the "didn't understand the question" category. :)
I shaved with the sarcasm in this video. It's razor sharp.
Omg too funny
Love the dry humor, despite being a HAM. Keep em comin!
But are you a sad ham? That is the question.
@@mikebussy3334 clearly he is not a sad ham, he is a happy ham due to liking and wanting more ;)
I love the sarcasm. People are so emotionally charged to their radio religion (cult). I use which ever platform that I need to get the job done. It's about communication and not which religion you subscribe to.
Well Said & There Are At Least As Many Radio Snobs As There Are Gun Snobs Out There. As Long As You're Being Civil & Not Disrespectful, What Difference Does It Make?
I just subscribed. Got my GMRS license. Now I’m studying for my ametuer radio license
I went from finding your content incredibly cringy, rolling my eyes whenever I saw one of your videos, to laughing my ass off and seeking them out. Well done. Well done.
-A formerly sad ham.
I’ve been 4x4’n wrong this whole time!! We used channel 4; but it’s 4 TIMES 4 🤦♀️🤦♀️ Thank you for educating me on this scientific evidence! You are very funny and I’m learning a thing (or 4)🤣❤️🐞
16 is 4 times better than channel 4, it was so obvious...
Mo Power! 4x Mo Better!
I don't recall Randy being this funny in person...you've found your stage brother lol
“You might have to read some words, but it’s there.”
Truer words never spoken. Thanks for the video from a HAM trying his best not to be a dickhead.
And thats where he lost some people. Lol 😆
I greatly appreciate your GMRS series. I am now licensed and will be using GMRS on our trip this weekend. Keep up the great videos!
Love your dry wit and sarcasm. Been watching all your radio vids and I hope you keep getting questions so you get keep doing more of them. Your channel has inspired me to learn more about gmrs, obtain my gmrs license, and I have an 805G on order. Will be looking into a mobile gmrs unit for my wife's Forester (already have a ham rig set up in my vehicle) and, hopefully, getting the fam to try it out. And yes, I'm a ham but do slam away as most hams deserve it. There are several gmrs repeaters in my area and I have received permission to use all of them. I must say, however, that I hear almost zero activity on them. Seems gmrs is more "purposed" to "deliberate" conversation between known parties. My perception is that nobody uses it just to say hi to others and get to know other hobbiests. Maybe you can do a video on that aspect and I can get a few more yuks from your channel?
I have found a new enjoyment just to watch for his “Sarcasm “. 😂🤣😂. No really, I learn so much about all this GMRS stuff as I am new to this radio stuff.
Growing up with a CB, channel 19 was always the local group chat channel.
You are like a strong magnet. I'm drawn to the wit and wisdom of your channel. 🧲
That was definitely scientific. Got my gmrs license last week, got a pair of gmrs radios on the way. Your videos are great! Gmrs is much easier than trying to have my wife get a ham license.
I only watch your videos because of your infectious smile and constant laughter.
The best radio you can ever get is the one you decide on buying for yourself. People always have opinion but I have found over the years people that have opinion are awful generous with someone else's money. Your videos are always spot on man.
Knowing that I am your favorite viewer, and being somewhat of a suck-up, I just want to thank you for all your videos! I am new to all this and your videos are very helpful!
Randy, I really enjoy your videos, not only are you informative, but your science and your witticism is second to none, lol.
Just found this channel. I just got my gmrs radios. This was a great production !!!
First video from this guy I've seen.
30 seconds in: Is this guy an idiot?
40 seconds in: This guy is hilarious. I get it, and I'm subscribing :)
I learn something every time you post, I added #16 ....I'm not a licensed ham yet ...I'm just getting into all this. Thank you 😊
Great video... I was looking for one of those Wouxun GMRS radios and couldn’t find them. Everyone was sold out. So I picked up a KG UV9D Plus... already had a non plus version... they make really good radios, I like the quality. Heck, I am sitting on my couch now and hitting the repeater and taking to people all across the country.
My favorite CZcamsr! Cheers from Denver CO!
The wit you inject into the subject is awesome
The 4x4 is the best explanation ever. Just started learning about GMRS Thanks
Makes complete sense! Thank you good sir for your infinite wisdom and knowledge.
Don't forget the "science".
Nice my families radios are set to 16 , don’t remember how I landed on 16 as our family emergency channel , but nice to have a back up on that. I remember when there were CB clubs, yeah I’m that old
Well,, you can’t argue with science! Informational and entertaining! Thanks Randy!
GMRS all the things! Love the videos about GMRS I recently got on the Santiago repeater and will be getting a mobile unit soon. Thanks for all the information.
Your absolute lack of giving a shit has earned you a subscriber.
Thanks for enlightening me. Great Video.
The music is perfect for the dry humor!
It is as it should be - I didn't even notice it.
Yet another....awesome presentation! Thank you!
4x4 is16. I am having flashbacks to elementary school😂
Thanks for breaking all this down, I appreciate the videos and the help.
uv-5r for the win, that is all. hope you have a blessed day. really enjoy the vids
i love your sense of humor... good, info, good job.
Loving these videos and and your ever present and "subtle" frustration with all those with whom you find yourself somewhat forced to interact with. The price for a public presence I suppose. Anywho... thank you for all of the great content and the laughs. Hope to run in to you out in the trail some day. Be well and stay safe.
I have a comment... I appreciate the information! Thanks, got my GMRS station license just like you described I would!
Man you are killing it with the radio reviews… keep’m coming.
Love the channel. Thanks for posting
I totally enjoyed this video. Keep making them! 😀👍
I missed the polls! Great video by the way. I use all three types. Had my dads CB he had in his truck from the 70s, so put it up and use it once in a while. Have HAM radios too and probably work that more often and now GMRS. I don’t know anyone local that has GMRS so it’s pretty dead really. It’s fun to have all three. I mostly got GMRS as my family doesn’t need to get a HAM license.
Same here! I have both, ham and gmrs licenses, i bought gmras radios for all the family, we have gmrs repeater near but hardly you can hear someone there. At least it give me the peace of mind if something happens we have another way to communicate.
Love videos, as a Ham,and radio guy in general, thank you for the info and the laughs
As informative as they are entertaining! Thank you for making these!
Your videos are helping plan a Neighborhood Radio Watch. Thanks for everything. Retevis vs. Wouxon? After watching your reviews, that's my next venture as you seem equal on both.
I really am enjoying your videos and have used your links to make purchases, you're welcome. Besides being informative I enjoy the humor. I even cringe a little bit when you stroke your favorite radio. But besides that you do a great job creating and editing the videos. Very well done indeed!
Are you as much fun sitting around the camp fire after a hard day of 4-wheeling? I'd like to see that too :-)
My new favorite CZcams channel! Funny, informative, and you're not even Canadian. Or are you?
Funny and very informative for GMRS beginners like me. Thanks!
Another great video! I appreciate the dry humor and sarcasm! Love it! Keep up the great work!
Quite briliant to listen to you when you turn off your dryness of humor.....still your sense of humor is just amazing
His deadpan look and presentation is hilarious 😂. Very informative without all the narcissism from the Sad Ham crowd. They are still fussing about the " no code" technician.
I love your deadpan sarcasm , ( and the info you provide ) carry on Brother.
Hi! I have watched a couple of your videos including the one about the Midland MXT275 (didn't buy it yet!), since it has 15 power channels and 8 repeater channels, according to the specs, then which channel would be the best one to use? Thanks beforehand for your kind reply, and I really like the way you do your videos, keep up your great work!
Great post, your nailing it !
Another great video. I love your humor.
I hope I see you out on the trail. You're a funny dude. Great videos
that is how you do deadpan. Bravo!!! Likeded and subscribeded
make so much sense. no wonder i was off-road on my 2x2 and talking in GMRS ch4 transmitting on 4 watts
Thank You. I just set 462.575 (channel 16) on my GMRS-V1 ,,,,, Lock it in ! WRKK201 OUT !
i like that you've refined your awesome radio character over the years
all i did was stop taking my medications
Ammron has said that certain channels are for "preppers". As for other "platforms" (cb, frs, gmrs, etc...) as well. My mag [mutual asst. group] uses gmrs, frs & cb for our back up comms.
BTECH GMRS-V1 GMRS
Just bought the btech gmrs v-1 off one of your videos
Thank using for offroading
It would be nice if there was still a recognized calling frequency or Channel where people can connect than pair off for more private conversations very useful and crowded areas.
I suppose you could scan then request they change to a different channel.
Randy; your off the cuff comments are second to None!!!! Please keep them coming…..
Dry wit appreciated, as with all your videos. Keep on Jeep'n ...
Another important factor is the frequency or channel the antenna is tuned to that would be the sweet spot to get max bang.
I don't know how I'm going to handle all this scientific data you keep on putting out! Feel like I'm back in school, gotta go get my pen n note pad for your vidjas!
I want a gmrs license and radio but dont really understands it still so I keep seen your vids to learn more
Just Outstanding! Keep up the good work. Mary Ann for the win!!!!!
I followed your advice about having the rodger beep on. Turns out it was actually keeping a lot of people from responding. 😂 Thanks for the sarcasm. 😂
In all seriousness, if someone refuses to talk to you because your RogerBeep is on, you probably don't want to talk to them.
For chatter between vehicles in a trail convoy, the case could be made to use the low power (5 watts max) simplex channels 1-7. This would keep the high power (up to 50 watts) channels 15-22 free for longer distance simplex or repeater use.
I agree and want to add that using higher power, in close proximity to others, could damage the radios. Depending on the quality of the radio(s), the RF can damage the receive circuitry.
I guess it depends on how long the convoy is and how far apart segments of the convoy might become separated from the rest of the convoy.

You crack me up. Love the channel !
Do you have an affiliate link for the crossover cable you use with the KG-1000G and NP-231 transfer case? I can only assume it drops your radio to channel 8 when you get off the trails.
Great humor and the infor si why I subscribe to your channel.
I dig pretty much all radios, but am leaning towards cb (as a backup) and gmrs for day to day use.
Another great video Randy!
Your ready for Prime Time...
Brilliant 🧐
I have the Baofeng UV 5R ,was able to program a frequency but how do you set it to a certain channel? Thank you ! P.s. I’ve had 3 Not Rubicon’s two CJ 5’s and a 91 Cherokee 😊
"...If you disagree, I don't care!" LMAO!!! I love this guy! (NOHOMO!)
Thank you!!!
Randy, I am really liking your videos but I was disappointed that there was no pinned comment yet!
And yes, Marianne for the win as it is science!!
I learned a lot on the channel wattage thanks
Like your videos thank you Brother
Thanks, good stuff
I have a BS degree in engineering, that my friend is a degree in BS! 😂
I do like your thought pattern behind your “science” and agree with it. Although it may be the same science used behind the scenes for COVID-19.
Oooooo. that's harsh.
@@sferg9582 but no less true.
You are funny...and informative!
Your sarcasm is the best!
Great stuff here!👍👍😎🇺🇸 16 it is then!👍👍😎🇺🇸 The science is definitely on your side.
Wonder if you have a flat tire on your rig. It is not a 4x4 anymore but a 4x3, do you use channel 12?
So a GRMS radio at 1/2 a Watt still has the external antenna advantage? That still seems very advantageous even if you relegated to low power. Have any tests been done regarding this?
"You might have to read some words", Love it.
Can has always worked fine for my friends an I.. I have ground straps all over my Jeep and tuned my antenna and it gets 10 miles of range.
Mercy sakes this here's the" Rubber Duck" and I love your videos 10-4.
Can't argue with the science!!!! The government so!!! Love your posts!
I had a hard time following all the science in this video. Using GMRS sounds so complicated.
I am gunna get a ham radio.
That’s a ten 4 or should I be saying what’s a 10 for ?
It's not complicated at all. You key the thing and talk . And wait, and wait ...and no one will answer. I have scanned the GRMS and FRS and heard two people talking, but not to each other! Dead as a door knob...
My dad directed Gilligan’s Island. Fact!
Prepper’s should be using channels that can reach the most people
The Command Center scene in Live Free Die Hard has the radio that will reach the most people in dire world ending scenarios according to the computer hacker that owned the commend center. John McClaine was laughing his ass off about the tech nerd having a CB and then wound up needing one towards the end of the movie to call in the Calvary. Apparently anything but MURS radio which would actually function just fine but what good is that if nobody is on the other end.
You are hilarious. Subscribing.
Randy, you're a genius. I was blind, but now I see the light. This video is indisputable evidence that channel 16 is the best channel to use for GMRS. Unless you're using a UV-5r, as that would be violating FCC guidelines and result in a strongly worded letter.
