I liked the pearlscent but 1/2 is a little too much for my taste. I'd like to try a 1/4. Also, check out a blue streak filter if you haven't tried it.

I love the pearlescent filters and tend to use those at weddings when doing close up shots of the bride especially. I'm glad you mentioned these. I don't think people realize what a difference a matte box can make either!

Other than ND filters, the most useful filter is a polarizer. I've got a set of Cokin P filters that I probably should pull out and start playing with again.

We were always trained in doing stuff in post, always do it in post kind of mentality, very different from early days of cinematography when you have to decide right there and then how the footage should look because there was a limit to how much you could change afterwards.
Relearning the old methods of cinema, the old methods of story telling and how to use a camera really changed my perspective in how its become a lost art.
Yeah it takes more time to change filters on your camera and dial all the stuff in, but thats still LESS time than you will spend correcting everything in post if you had not.

I would like to add: the most common sizes of filters used in cinema (at least in the LA market) are 4x5.65, 138 round, and 6x6. 6x6 filtration is the least common of the three, but it’s still used for graduated filters, or “edge” filters as I like to call them. Other sizes used include 40.5 round, series 9, 4.5 round (measure close to a 95mm front), 5.6x5.6, and behind the lens filters which require special sensor baffles to attach the filter between rear element and sensor using magnets. Behind the lens filters (BTLF or IFM) are extremely expensive and are only really used on the highest end of filmmaking.

I like the Black Pro mist personally, the issue is stacking filters, sometimes I need ND, and Black pro-mist, makes me want a camera with internal ND. Also.. I’ll double check, but Roger Deakins didn’t use any special filters in Blade Runner 2049 I believe.. if I recall that Hollywood reporter round table correctly. So don’t feel the need to run out to buy these if you don’t have the money, these filters are kinda expensive lol.
Edit* ok, I looked it up, he used a custom Tiffen Red filter! Source: ICG
Also, these 4x4 are way better at stacking than screw ons. Thanks

This is a very well put-together video, but in my opinion, the filters you've shown seem kinda more like gimmicky effects rather than something that will make your footage look cinematic. I think good lighting, shallower depth of field, frame rate, and aspect ratio have a lot more to do with a "cinematic" look.
