      Chris Hau Hair down... but you knew this-that’s why you left it down for the vlog! ;).
      What about a spin in place shot? Rotation about a central place can be cool, especially outside or inside an interesting building.

  • @PaulNewfield-PasadenaCAU-wb4xg

    @ 3:50, the reason why walking backwards gives you a smoother shot is because walking backwards force’s you to walk on your toes! Walking and running on your toes greatly reduces the bobbing effect that some get when walking forward. This was a baseball technique for outfielders to keep our head steady when running so fly balls don’t bounce around in our vision! The key to eliminating camera movements when walking or running is to never let your heels touch the ground!

    Tthanks for this helpful vid. I started in the video biz at age 34 and am now exactly twice that age. I'm not quite as nimble now, but I know my new hip in early 2021 will help me keep a better level forward movement on those low gimbal shots! You do a very good job of not doing the up/down bobbing many gimbalers have on YT vids. Merry Christmas 2020...and good-effing-bye, 2020!!!

    Great video! I think that electronic gimbals can really step up your work as a videographer A LOT. Many people say the would rather go with the "good old steadycam"... However, a lot of the shots that you suggested here cannot be done good enough (or not at all) with a steadycam! Especially for travel filmmakers the variety of shots and angles that you can get with these things clearly make your work look more interesting.

    ZigsVision
    I just bought a crane 2 now im binge watching pro-tips. $549 but man i had alot of shake beforehand on my canon m50. Now its buttery smooth, i must add when purchasing a gimbal first thing you should do is slow the pan speed settings down but after you do that it looks super-cinematic. the joystick pan takes some getting used to its like using a shallow nintendo N64 wiggly button. Its all rather large in person, the carry case is a must. Im not a fan of the manfrotto plate setup but its the industry standard. You have to hit a button and untwist a knob to remove it from the gimbal, then you have to then find a coin or similar and untwist the plate from the camera itself. Most cameras that need a gimbal have bottom mounted batteries so theres that. Sometimes i miss handheld "freehand" so i usually switch it up for a nice combination. If you want clients they pretty much expect gimbal looking footage. I also have the NEEWER $50 mechanical gimbal and it was a headache to work with. But ownership is definitely a learning curve. It has paramters that need to be calibrated for optimal efficiency, Consistently re-balancing the payload. BTW balancing it is just ensuring your camera is level by adjusting the position of the 3 arms 1 by 1 and manually tightening them. Hope i didnt miss anything.
    O the app is funny you actually pull up your phone camera in the app not the mounted and connected dslr/ mirrorless camera attached to your gimbal,. I assume it tries to match positions by the image you select on your phone. weird i know but effective. i mount my phone to my camera hot shoe and select tracking targets that way. i thought it was not working correctly until i did my research.
    Its worth the investment, but only when your serious and you know why you need it
    Pro-tip on the m50 is turn the servo mode off because the canon m50 will try to autofocus all the time and it makes using it complicated because it will change focus on you. If you need to change focus after you set your initial focus you can either tap the screen or on my gimbal it has a knob that allows me to slowly dial it in. It works amazing on the m50! fully featured!
    But hey if you find this informative . subscribe to my channel im thinking of doing informational vids, i just recently shot my first music video with the m50. It was without the crane 2 and it was super shaky, i found alot of flaws that only i noticed that i am working against now. On the gimbal im able to use 4k on non servo makes the contrast based autofocus system worthwhile. I also use that 50mm 1.8 its a must have. the amount of light it pulls in low light situations is worth the 50 bucks. Considering a speed-booster, i hear good and bad things about them. I want it because it can pull a whole 2 stops of extra light meaning turning a kit lens into a decent lens. like being able to go from aperature 3.5 to a low 2 something. Amazing stuff in theory. And it makes it more close to full frame. 50mm=55ish instead of 50=85mm ish.

    3:50 the reason why walking backwards tends to be more smooth is because when you move backwards, your step starts at the toes and slowly and steadily progresses onto the ball of the foot and finishes at the heels, whereas if you move forwards, often you'll begin your step by hitting the ground with your heels and then moving onto the ball of your foot and then your toes. This initial impact of your heels hitting the ground will produce some shake across your entire body, and even with the best gimbals, it will still show! If you don't believe me, try kicking the ground with the front of your foot, and then with your heel. Odds are you'll feel the impact from a heel kick throughout your entire body, whereas kicking it with the front of your feet won't go much farther than your knees!
    Okay that's all! Great vid Chris!

      @rememberthisfacebaby Před 5 lety +3

      To walk smoother going forward try walking by putting your toe down first then heel. It feels weird at first but it is noticeably smoother. Its a trick used in marching bands so you get less bounce in your walk.
