  • In Ouch…Did You Really Mean That? Naiya explores her school and community's response to a video project modeled after the Harvard video project ‘I Too Am Harvard’. Her talk asks us all to think about the personal and societal issues of racial identity in a diverse community.
My name is Naiya Davis and I am currently a senior in high school. I have a passion of wanting everyone around me to feel comfortable in their own skin and have their individuality without being stereotyped. My Ted-Talk is about comments that we may said intentionally and unintentionally that discriminate against our families and friends. These types of comments are called Micro-aggressions. I tell the audience about my journey of facing micro-aggressions in a predominately white school and also being a micro-aggressor without realizing it, and why it brought me to Wayland High School stage.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

I get this all the time, being an asian French guy, my whole childhood was people, even adults asking me how I could speak such good french ..."And with a french accent also!" and those people thought they were actually saying a compliment while I was thinking in my head how such small minded and utter self centered people could exist. I am french and I speak french whatever my skin color, deal with it !

Felix Martin if you're in the US, then it's not race that makes adults surprised at how well you speak French, it's because we don't hear French much in the US, outside of Louisiana. It's not a common language like Spanish is. To most adults French is something you learn in high school then forget most of. It's impressive on some level when people speak it, even if they are French.
