My first “experience” of 911s was my older brother telling me about his friend who graduated college with him. This friend was a business major who thought the first thing to do was buy a Porsche! This was in 1964, I was 12, and the Porsche was a 911. I don’t know much else, but that he liked the car, a lot! That kind of turned me on to cars, and the nicer tools in particular (no Porsches yet)!

This video brought me joy. I own an '88 911 and despite having many hours in the driver seat, I still enjoy watching other people drive theirs and enjoy all the same things I love about mine. It's a truly unique and special driving experience.

  • @susannero6401
    @susannero6401 Před 2 měsíci +12

Like you i have an '88, but completely stock like this one. Alot of things you said resonate with me: the ideal size and view out, and the Toyota-like reliability (seriously). The G-50 is definitely long-legged; 2nd is equivalent to 3rd in, say, a Ferrari 328. The pedal box is adjustable, so these are actually ideal for heal and toe. One of the main selling points for me is that post-'76 911s are fully galvanized, so it's like having a 60's/'70's era car without having to worry about rust. They also get excellent gas mileage for an old sportscar: 30mpg hwy. I've put 40K miles on mine and it has never let me down. I use it for city driving and long-distance road trips. The only disadvantage is that they've become crazy expensive.

My dad had Porsches as I was growing up, a 72 911T and then some 944s. I remember how different the view was out of the 944 windshield, it seemed that the front of the car was missing, I was so used to seeing the 911 headlight bumps.
I was nostalgic for an air cooled 911 as an adult so I bought an 89 3.2 Carrera a few years ago before the prices skyrocketed. All original, 55k documented miles. Absolutely no regrets.

14:56 - yep. I'm not a car enthusiast but I have driven my dad's 1971 Datsun pickup truck and it is a raw driving experience. It has no P/S, no A/C, a thin steering wheel and no modern amenities. You can feel every little bump and imperfection on the road. Its quite a noisy ride but it is definitely fun and engaging. The only thing I would like it to have would be A/C as that would make it more comfortable to drive during the summer.

Your videos and impressions (and beautiful countryside) are always enjoyable. It should be pointed out though (ask any old Porsche mechanic) that the '87 to '89 911 with the G50 is the most reliable, trouble free aircooled 911 of all time. There were issues before that and after that but they are the sweet spot. And be careful with that trail breaking, they're not as accepting of it as the BMW's of the time with 50-50 weight distribution.

a somewhat overlooked aspect of the rear engine + transaxle layout is the more efficient power transfer & lightness (no lengthy driveshaft. another (you alluded to) is the greater braking performance. Porsche has always had an edge vs traditional layout competition because their cars are lighter (relatively), have great traction under braking, and more balanced braking control. the "giant killers" of yore became core to production design & engineering. all from the old man's P-Wagens & KdF-Wagen.

I thought you weren’t going to mention the left side exhaust and the glorious sound you get off the barriers. And then you did. Then I thought I was going to tell you that you overlooked the seats, and then in the epilogue, you did. Great review, as always.

Judging by this video it feels buttery smooth to drive, I hope it feels the same to actually drive it. It's like this is as smooth as it can get in such a mechanical car without the intervention of plenty of electronics, if that makes sense. The downshift from 3rd to 2nd around 18m mark as you exited the highway was sooooooo satisfying, on the video it felt like a perfect shift.
Timeless piece of art and this paint job is one of the best suited for this car imo. Although the spec of yours feels like the one I'd rather go with if I could choose, I hope I'll own any 964 in near future. Such a fantastic car, thanks for the longer video with this one. ❤

As a owner of the exact same Guards Red car but from 1986 (w/ 915) I gotta defend my baby a little bit. There is nothing wrong with the 915 transmission, especially one that's tuned-in and well maintained. It was a derivative of the 916 racing gearbox Porsche used in the 70s and 80s. If you know anything about Porsche history you know what they did in those two decades. It's designed to be lightweight and incredibly fast, but owners were expected to know how to use it properly. For sure, when I first met the car two years ago I thought "what the hell" too, because shifting it the same way i would shift a modern car, half the time I couldn't get into 2nd at all. But living with it and dailying it for 2 years now the gears glide in and out and I never miss a single shift. The trick is in the clutch and in timing and when you get it right it feels like a well lubricated bolt action rifle, incredibly satisfying. If it's good enough to win at Le Mans it's good enough for you to rip through some weekend twisties.

For a long time this model 911 was my dream car. Back in my 30s seemed semi attainable at some point. By the time I got to a point in life where a toy car was doable, price and availability of these had changed a lot, and not in my favor. So, 20 yrs later I ended up picking up a 997, which is a great car. Ironically, picking up one of the g-series cars may have been a decently smart financial decision.

I have an 18 GT3 and it’s such a different look from the front while driving. I started with 993 TT

Glad to hear that I’m not the only one that sees 992 as a modern reinterpretation of ur-911 and G-modell lookswise. Not a big fan of how it drives tho, unfortunately that’s the only 911 I ever drove, I’d really want to try some older ones.

I'm glad I stumbled across this video! I'm picking up a silver 1987 911 soon. I saw the Attleboro exit haha, I grew up in North Attleboro. Live in Mansfield now. Would love to meet up at some point and cruise and talk cars!

Il rosso dona molto alle Bumpers 😘
Però dovreste provare le 930/20 senza cat da 231 cv... più grinta baby

Back in the 80s, many 911 owners crashed them because of the imbalanced center of gravity due to the rear engine design. One of the tricks Porsche used to fix the issue was to put counter weight blocks of steel to the front of the car.

When I was a kid I remember how a Porsche from this era with a Whale tale used to park near my house. All of the kids thought it was really ugly.😂😂😂. Now I look at this one and it’s so dainty and pretty.❤

Thanks for the real nice video ! Only one remark...Yes the G50 is the better gearbox , but it's not a holy grail. It does the job better than the 915 . My 84 has a rebuild 915 gearbox and it will do it's job not to bad. Both are old gearboxes and I have driven other older cars who shift better than the 80's Porsches... so yes go for the G50 if you can find and afford one. I should advise to look for a well maintained car . I love the older cars because of the engagement and the older 911's are one of the best classics to give that feeling. Thanks .
