- In the summer of 2014 - the 70th Anniversary of the D-Day Landings - octogenarian Bernie Jordan made global headlines. He’d staged a “great escape” from his care home to join fellow war veterans on a beach in Normandy, commemorating their fallen comrades.
It was a story that captured the imagination of the world - Bernie seemed to embody the defiant, “can-do” spirit of a generation that was fast disappearing.
But of course, it wasn’t the whole story. It was the story we all tell ourselves to make war and old age bearable. The bitter-sweet script explores the reality with wit and a very big heart.
Bernie’s adventure, spanning a mere 48 hours, also marked the culmination of his 60-year marriage to Rene - the story celebrates their love without sentimentality and with an eye to the lessons we can all learn from the Greatest Generation.

God this trailer had me in tears. My grandad god love him, as no longer with us. But he was in his 90s and no ine knew where he vanished to and it turned out he snucked to France with a women he met. He actually ended up in a hit and run there and that's how we found out by hospital calling where he gone.
Michael Caine retired after 70 years in the industry once he had finished this film. Fifty years since Zulu. Holy sh*t.
He is such an amazing actor and its so sad to see him getting old but again this is life plus i think he did right by retiring he deserved the retirement after a long career

What an absolutely beautiful movie. Mr Caine never disappoints.
Glenda Jackson was scary on tv in 1975? as the queen. She could make a Navy Destroyer do a hard u-turn. best lookout. magnificent 1 in a million actress in some roles. Glenda shall not be replaced.
