Glad you’re staying positive man. I always say working for yourself is risky and you never know what to expect, but this is a good reminder that same goes for working for a company. This may end up being a great opportunity for you and I wish you the best brother

Thanks for sharing that, James. I've been in a similar situation back in March - got cut from a very small team in a very abrupt and unexpected way. Took me a little while to bounce back, but as you say, this is also an amazing opportunity to answer the "what am I capable of?" question. I like your positive and no ill-will approach. Keep your head up, stay positive and good things will happen 🙏

If a company doesn't want a guy who is
    1. Good in communication
    2. Attitude
    3. Obviously technical stuff
    4. Excited to learn new opportunities.
Then I think some pbm with the company.
You should also try freelancer/ consultant with content creation 👍.All the best 👍

Just happened to me 4 days ago...
Joined a smaller company as well as intermediate dev. Got let go after a month because I couldnt deliver "senior" work... eventhough I was clear I don't know the techstack... working full remote and also using macOS for the 1st time in my life... managed to deliver everything to the best of my ability for the 1st month. Didn't get any feedback... then the 1st time I got stuck I was let go because they need someone who can deliver immediately. Hard to process and move forward since I left a really great job to try a new challenge.

James!! Seriously man, lean into selling online courses. You are an amazing teacher. I learned more quicker just from a few of your videos on front/backend than I did from months and months of months of Codecademy. Your content is super valuable and I'm just waiting for your full Svelte course to drop, will be first in line to pay for that. Seriously dude, I'm saying this somewhat selfishly because I want to see more courses from you AND WILL PAY FOR THEM. You can do really really well and in the future that can be in addition to dev work. Do it!!!!! I can't wait for courses from you tbh

Maybe you could create a full-blown paid course for mid/seniors with advanced techniques: full app in Next.js written in TypeScript with unit-tests, integration and E2E (cypress), while using one of design patterns and mentioning best architecture for scaling that app...I never seen any course like that anywhere. There is not a lot of content for mid/senior developers. I would pay big bucks for that and I bet others will too!

Sorry to hear you were let go!
But I think it's GREAT that you are seeing it as an opportunity - because it absolutely is!
I guess the moral of the story is that you should NEVER fully rely on an employer (even if they seem nice). You never know what's around the corner. So always need to make sure you have a good plan B for times like these. Otherwise, you are always going to be vulnerable.
I think you are actually a great pinup case for having a great plan B: you are clearly a great programmer and also very accomplished content creator and speaker. So the developer world is really your oyster now.
Look forward to seeing what you do next 😀

This is the fate of all developer relations / advocate positions. You are just creating content to entice developers to join. When hiring freezes then your job doesn't matter anymore. Fortunately you're talented enough to go get a real software engineering job that actually makes a difference and makes a company money and keeps you employed.

    • @arod4056

This is exactly what I was thinking. No offense to James, but during recessions, the first people out are positions such as advocate positions, QAs, this new role called diversity managers in tech companies. Luckily for him, he is technical and has enough knowledge to be a software engineer again. He should be fine.
