- I play a Magic the Gathering Online Legacy league with Jeskai Sharkstill, my most recent update to the deck sponsored by Patreon subscriber Jeremy! I updated my top 8 list from Baltimore to play in a local event, then took those lessons, combined with a coaching session with a subscriber, and came out to this list at the end. The verdict? Urza's Saga sucks! It's out! With more colored sources of mana in the deck, we get access to actual Counterspell that helps cover the crazy metagame in one clean spell. Still of course representing Standstill, Shark Typhoon, Timeless Dragon, and Currency Converter. Saga no more, back to the classics! MTG

Amazing deck tech discussion on some finer nuances of fine-tuning. The meta shift of "people are respecting Standstill so we can shave our operate-under-Standstill tools for better tune-up elsewhere" is so fascinating.

Love the power and play patterns of this deck without the Sagas - really feels like it's maximizing the value of Standstill and feels like not having Saga drive your gameplan gives a lot more flexibility in when and how you Standstill and have mana available
I've gotten into proxying legacy to play with friends because of your content, and one of the decks planned for my second batch happened to be your most recent jeskai sharkstill list. My lgs allows proxies for legacy, maybe there are some communitys in your are that allow them as well to get some fnms 🦭
This deck is the reason I tried out legacy online(on free stuff like cockatrice) I hope they reprint the duals or something to make the cost not so bad. Would absolutely love to own this deck and play it in tournaments

54:09 Now that's a true control mage. The only ways to win the game in opponent's deck are Snapcaster, Strix, K Command, and Jace ultimate.
As a Standstill connoisseur I appreciate this! I'm still all in on the Hornstill variant so this will be interesting 😁

thank you for posting the list! i think i gotta do it... mr bryan coval, you've creating a legacy monster out of me (i have also assembled a good chunk of dark bant, and loved the maverick saga deck you took through a league (even more so since i can convert my naya depths build into it and vice versa whenever i feel like it)).
woooow r2g1 is excelent showcase of grinding power from both decks. real cool to see hall shine in one of these leagues.

That 1st elves game gave me a new appreciation for currency converter. It's just such a good card for Sharkstill, even if it's not it an Urza's saga package.

In R2G1 I wonder if the opponent should've been plusing Jace early on. The card they'd see would be under the standstill, but if they're gonna just pop it immediately every time, you're still gonna see it.
This deck kinda reminds me of Caw-Go. The sharks are like the birds and the currency converter like the moorland haunt. Thinking about it like that helps me see how you don't want the sagas. Great matchs

I agree with your reasoning about cutting sagas, but without them to search up your artifacts I think you should be running 3 Currency Converter. I've been impressed with that card almost every time I've seen it hit the board, even in multiples. But I'll reserve final judgement till I've watched the full league.
That was might first thought too. Of course he could still play 1 Saga as an option too, as a "3rd" CC, lol
Cut the 2nd Emporer imo. It's cute, but not necessary. Then add a 1 of Mox Diamond somewhere too, in case you've already got a converter and want to discard a land for the mega acceleration (mox mana + treasure mana)
Mox is great when you're chaining stand stills too, not that you neeeed anything at that point but just look at that m2g1, drawing a mox in those first 12 cards would've helped a boat load
Eh, who knows. Deck is powerful, stand still is finally getting it's day, despite shark typhoon being bomb af with it for the last couple years.
I am happy to see counterspell preform for you this league. I think I will keep them in the deck now I just have to find the right art.

sheesh this was the last standstill video, wow. But anywho, Academy loremaster in this kinda deck? I'm not sure if its good, but it seems playable at least. Youre never going to want to break your own standstill (and if you do, it is more important then a singular card from the loremaster.) so maybe? what are yalls thoughts?

Counterspell doesnt remove a resolved Jace or Murktide. Still important

Great list. The Uro/Minsc pile matchup feels unwinnable with this list (unless they timeout, which is pretty common). Have you made any changes for the current meta?
Counterspell is doing a lot of that work, plus Hydroblast in the sideboard. I’m also considering Moon/Ruination to punish greedy mana

Am I Missing something? Round 5 game 2. Why did you swords the second reclaimer. Seems like a huge punt that we didn’t really think about.
God this list is hot, I love it
Just some quick thoughts.
1. I was considering playing mirrorshell crab instead of counterspell. It's uncounterable and works perfectly with converter, however it costs 1 more mana.
2. 1 or 2 dress down in sb or main seem really good, i just don't know what to cut for it
3. Is 1 of Wasteland really good? I would consider one of the channel lands, probably Otawara or just another fetchland.
Without saga the deck feels so smooth, converter is great too, i just love it
The issue with mirrorshell crab is that it's more expensive than counterspell, and it's a soft counter that can't be cast for free. So it's a lot less reliable than counterspell late game, while also having a higher opportunity cost, as holding up 3 mana is harder than 2 every turn. It also can't be cast with shields down like daze, so it can't punish greedy plays as well or as early.
It DOES have the incidental upside of being able to hit abilities as well as spells which is oddly relevant in legacy.
So I guess the question is whether the extra utility of being harder to counter because it's a channel instead of a cast and the ability to hit abilities as well as spells, is worth being a soft counter that can't be cast for free.

Is there a specific reason for the mountain in the SB?
Is it just for the land count against control and resilience against B2B or Ruination?
With Plateau and Volc main I assumed you wouldn't need that one mountain to cast your red splash from SB.
The best deck in the format is a Wasteland deck that you want all your Red Blasts against.
have you considered dress down in this deck as another really strong heliods hall target?
Is Dovin's veto a consideration, maybe a split of them in the counterspell slot? (since plateau's in there)
I thought about it, but Murktide Regent remains a cars you have to respect all the time.

I got 4 comic book promo standstills off a friend a bit back and finally put the deck together 2 weeks ago after meeting you at Baltimore. My heart wanted to be a B2B or blood moon deck but you really couldn't with saga. Is it feasible/worth it/is there space for that jeskai control your lands angle in sharkstill?
You can play those now, I just think between Boseiju and Pyroblast the decks that care can answer them easily
@@BoshNRoll ye, boseiju really messes up b2b blood moon and standstill huh. I guess without the saga package we're more free to run things like energy flux and meltdown which helps against 8 cast and we just gotta prayge against lands. Thanks for the comment and keep up the content. love it!
At 48:11 why did you decide to bounce? Would bouncing nothing have been better? Or was the tempo worth giving them the extra card?
If I spike 1 mana removal then I get to keep Teferi. It’s ugly, but I’m not getting anywhere with “3 mana: draw a card” Teferi

How important do you think the red sideboard cards are? I don't own any red duals and I'm thinking about building this (or something very similar) for the Legacy Pit coming up
Pyroblast is really important. You don’t need the plateau, but I cant advise doing this without a Volcanic Island

Yes. I think Blood Moon is better. Those cards have never been worse between Pyroblast being everywhere and Boseiju in the decks that care, but if your metagame is hostile you can play Moon.

@BoshNRoll, really curious if you still rate this deck or not? The last week or two you've been mostly on Minsc and Boo four colour piles and doomsday. Has this deck just failed to keep with them do you think, or is it just circumstance?
I think Standstill is working too hard and you should just play Expressive Iteration if you want to win
Do you envisage any list that plays shark typhoon and iteration?
A question : Isn't Demonic Consultation also a combo with Thassa's Oracle?

You can’t Leyline Binding a DRC/Aether Vial/Carpet of Flowers etc on turn 1. There’s also only 3 basic land types in the deck, 3 mana removal isn’t really what I’m looking for.
@1:37:20 why not wear tear into standstill? is the 20/20 a threat you want to save spells for?
If he plays standstill there he will be the one that has to crack standstill as the opponent can just attack with the 20/20 every turn till they win
with standstill in play, the opponent just activates stage/depths and waits. bosh will be forced to answer marit lage with a spell, breaking standstill and letting opponent draw cards

I’ve tried maps and theyre just too awkward. Just play the 1 and use your card selection and advantage to dig for it when it’s time

It’s a worse spell than all the spells and a worse land than all the lands. The pieces don’t add up together
@@BoshNRoll Yeah I watched the video now, no one ACTUALLY stays under Standstill anymore any way. I thought people respected the lock, but I see it's not the case. I just like it because may be legendary, but it enters untapped, I see there is no time to play it though

Yeah dress down is good. The trick is figuring out what to cut for it.

Can't you just use mana drain > counterspell? Possibly ramps you into hard casting Shark Typhoon and is just a flat out upgrade....
