Oh man the "moving up at the table" memories LOL My wife and I had children from previous marriages, so holidays at our house required multiple tables. As some of the kids got older they griped about not being seated at the adults table. I always told them they weren't moving up until someone croaked. Now they're telling their kids the same thing and I've got seniority on the "who's croaking next?" list LOL.
Great show John. Poor man’s flea market was pretty good! Being a meat cutter for 40+ years here in Kansas I have to tell you I never seen one meat cutter use the steel like that. We started at the tip and went down. We did have a protecter at the bottom to save from getting cut but normally just used about 3 quarters of the steal. There are also smooth steels and Ceramic steels. Ceramic is by far the best but don’t drop them. 😂. Anyway great show and great finds. Thank You for sharing.
How right you are! One of the original items I sold on eBay was an EMPTY Remington 870 box. I found it in the attic when I moved into this place. I got $225 for it!!! I could have gotten MORE if I had sold it to the guy trying to buy it before the auction ended.
I can remember when we got our first house w/dinning room table, when we had people over for the first time and I sat at the head of table! Really felt like a family man! Love the poor mans flea market.
I moved in with my grandmother to take care of her after my grandfather passed away when I was 19 and therefore I became the head of the household and took over grandpa's spot at the head of the table. I still use the honing steel that I inherited from them. The eagle gas can was a great find !
The fuel can is a nice find as new they are something like$80.00. I have an Eagle and a Justrite and are the only containers I would think to transport gasoline in. That metal screen is actually a flame trap and I would reinstall it because it is there to prevent any possibility of ignition. Do a search for Flame trap safety can and there are several videos explaining how they work. Nice carving set though, like you, no meat so it wouldn’t get much use. Thanks for the PMFM tour!
Great video John. I am not a big fan of the safety cans. 5 gallons of gasoline in a heavy can with an awkward handle contraption is almost a guaranteed spill. We had those at work due to OSHA regulations. Major pain in the neck trying to pour out the contents. The steel that John Fix has is a good tool if used properly. The ridges concentrate the force on a small area of the edge. Folding the burr back to a thin edge. Carving turkey or ham with the bone in wreaks havoc on the knife edge. Nice finds at the Poor Man's Flea. Not sure I would have picked up the string lights. Good diagnosis on the failure mode. The desk lamp is another good find. I have a couple of the old desk lamps with the cast iron base. Mostly because my Grandfather had one and these remind me of him . 😁😎
We never had a hone but my father always sharpened the knives. I carved the turkey and ham when I became a teenager. I passed the torch to my son n law, the to my grand sons. I have taken the flex part of lights like yours and adapted them to my machines I have created. Your gas can gets a thumbs up, these plastic cans are a night mare. Thank You
I never knew that you had to pass the knife first on the top side and then the underside of the steel, on the second pass, I used to turn the knife over and continue on the top side.........we sure learn a lot from you, thank you. The table lamp and the gas can are for sure keepers.🐞
I didn't comment Wednesday! The lights are cool. Reminded me of older ones that the guys used to attach to 2×4 framing that went up around Christmas tree lots! Reminded me of my dad carrying home a Christmas tree from the firehouse with me and my brother more or less hanging off the tree as we helped him carry it home!
You probably already know this, but just in case you don't know, if you decide to paint the gas can, it's best to use ceramic engine stray-paint or rust-oleum enamel engine because the gasoline will strip away regular spray-paint. Thanks for the video!
Years ago when I worked construction. I was told that “filter” in the gas can was a spark catcher. 🤷🏼♂️ Great find on that gas can. Eagle makes nice ones. Expensive…. I would guess the lights are 12v DC most of those seem to be that. The lamp…. Great work bench lamp in my opinion. Awesome finds John!

Great video... Ive sold on Ebay for years .. mostly for fun and downsizing. It's almost like fishing,.. sometimes you might catch a big fish. .. I can say eBay was better years ago. Now , if you don't go for their promotions and pay extra it seems like listings are hidden
I use the half that size safety can for lawnmower, string trimmer and snowblower gas. Once you use one you will want to throw all the new cursed ones in the garbage. About the only thing you need to do is releave the pressure bufore using it. I always popped the lid before I pick it up. Plus no more gas leaking out when you transport the can from the filling station.
Lights are a great fixture in the shop John… a connecting upto a 110v to 12v transformer as a permanent fixture.. would be fantastic, great solution to lighting 😃👍 cheers Rob
Wow, that gas can is expensive and much better than those plastic ones. That filter is also a flame arrestor to keep flames from going back into the can. That's for people that refuel their their equipment when they're hot. That lamp is a beauty. Nice haul John!
I'm a Chef, I always steel my knife at the beginning and end of each shift, sometimes throughout the day as well. As a result, I generally only have to sharpen my knives once a year. Definitely saves time and steel, plus my knife is always scary sharp 😁
I grew up calling them "sharpening steels" ! 😮. I didn't know there was a difference! Life is a never ending learning experience. I only recall seeing them used when we were butchering animals !

Great Wednesday video. You really found some good stuff at the Poor Man’s Flea Market. Those low voltage strings are pretty beefy. I see a lot of stuff put out on Tuesday nights and Wednesday mornings for our Thursday pickup. A few years ago I picked up a Craftsman small table saw and a Craftsman 10” drill press. I would never have touched that stuff if not for watching your videos. Cleaned them up real nice and gave them to my son-in-law. Your knowledge snd influence is great.
Thanks John, another great midweek mosh ! Yes, I saw John's video, my feelings were the same as yours, my grandparents had a horn handled set just like yours, John does some excellent restorations ! Both the lamp and particularly the fuel can were amazing freebies from the PMF, but the festoon lights were good too, thet looks like the right voltage to me, they don't look too dim or bright and light up the basement pretty good !
Wow I love those string lights and they look so great hanging there in the basement and great citrus cleaner too I wonder how it compares to orange glo because even though it’s mainly for wood furniture I use it all the time to remove sticky stuff like my kitchen hood and pocket knife after I misuse it running through packing tape to open boxes.
I use a similar ‘sharpening’ technique with my disposable razor blades. I flip up the guard, and on a pair of jeans, i run the blade backwards for about 8-12 inches. Do that 8-12 times. You can tell it’s done when the sound it makes changes to a lower pitch noise. This makes it so each disposable blade lasts a month or more and each shave feels way better than had i not done this trick. It saves a lot of money not replacing them every week or two.
John you ever heard of stroping? That's how I and alot of people these days bring back a edge. It's just a piece of leather with or without compound. I've never used the steel rod.
I hate In-Person Auctions, especially the ones that serve wine. I learned that back in the 80's! I overbid on junk! The Gas Can is nice! Maybe paint the bottom ring in yellow, to match the other yellow paint?
Likely 12 volt and they often connect to a small transformer that's about the same size as a phone charger (sometimes larger for more strings) but they will also connect to solar or just a battery alone too for camping and such. In person auctions, haven't been to in years, people always got to caught up in the bidding and drove the prices too high. Online auction I do great at and often get things for 75%-90% or even more off retail.
It would be a lot of work but I bet that gas can would look amazing all stripped of paint and polished up. Or even repainted in a retro candy apple or cherry. I'm looking forward to the next video from your land up state. I do miss messing about in the woods and would love to have a small patch of land of my own some day. Great video. I always assumed that using a knife hone the way you did was just another way of regular sharpening, and not dealing with those fine microscopic edges. Learned something new today. I like the way you have saved and take care of family articles from the past. I wonder how many people regret throwing out old family memories. With auctions, you have to know your get-out price and stick with it. Paying too much takes the fun out of the acquisition. Couldn't you salvage those light strings with a regular home low voltage power supply? They put out great light in your shop. The nearly mint gas can is a great find. It is unfortunate when people want to learn how to sharpen a knife, a lot of the time they turn to chefs, and meatworkers to get instructions. Then out comes the steel. Steels are a fantastic way to keep your edge aligned on a working knife that is used every day and destined to be replaced every year or so. They also are good for the home carving set that is brought out 2 to 3 times a year. But they are destructive monsters on some types of knife edges and geometries. Grr, Got that off my chest.
I need a gas can like that. Have you seen what they currently sell? Oh my god I spill gas every time. You need to hook it on the lip of a filler neck, push like hell and it comes out in spurts because the venting is terrible. You rbought up my Niagara Falls, John!

It's odd isn't it in these times when everyone and their dog is banging on about being green that everything these days it seems is made to be either completely non user serviceable or uses proprietary parts that the manufacturer will not sell replacements for or they even just make it annoying for the user to attempt to repair which discourages them from bothering like using weird security screws that most people aren't going to have a suitable driver for.

Mike- For some reason I always found those screens get in the way or impeded the pour. I’m glad I can remove this one. 😃👍

Great gas can. We had similar cans on my grandfather's apple orchard in the '60s & '70s. Got greasy hands wash them first in gasoline.

I always run a steel along my knives before using them in the kitchen. A few times each side. And I thought I was sharpening them!

The lamp and gas can were good finds, especially the gas can. I think black paint on the gas can lip will look good. Amazing that it does not have other dings or rust.

Great video. I always assumed that using a knife hone the way you did was just another way of regular sharpening, and not dealing with those fine microscopic edges. Learned something new today. I like the way you have saved and take care of family articles from the past. I wonder how many people regret throwing out old family memories. With auctions, you have to know your get-out price and stick with it. Paying too much takes the fun out of the acquisition. Couldn't you salvage those light strings with a regular home low voltage power supply? They put out great light in your shop. The nearly mint gas can is a great find. You need three hands to manipulate the "safety" junk they put out now. Very successful Poor Mans Flea Market trip this week.

Pretty cool getting to hear about your first chance at carving the Turkey and the graduations at the seats of the table. I hear you on being skeptical on the Ebay auctions and getting caught up in the bidding wars for the prize. I'm pretty much left to the buy it now or putting in the watchlist and seeing if the seller contacts you with a better offer like you recommended in a prior video.

It is unfortunate when people want to learn how to sharpen a knife, a lot of the time they turn to chefs, and meatworkers to get instructions. Then out comes the steel. Steels are a fantastic way to keep your edge aligned on a working knife that is used every day and destined to be replaced every year or so. They also are good for the home carving set that is brought out 2 to 3 times a year. But they are destructive monsters on some types of knife edges and geometries. Grr, Got that off my chest.

Auctions yeah you have to be careful and you better know what your bidding on and then a price you stop at…got to really look something over before hand…gotta have discipline…I’ve had really good luck…one example is I got a delta unisaw for five dollars one of the best tablesaws made at that time…just needed belts and arbor bearings…easy fix and plenty of you tube videos to reference…anyway I’m rambling…🖖

Just elbow grease and a little polishing compound- The bottom band I wire wheeled the paint off. 😃👍

It's odd isn't it in these times when everyone and their dog is banging on about being green that everything these days it seems is made to be either completely non user serviceable or uses proprietary parts that the manufacturer will not sell replacements for or they even just make it annoying for the user to attempt to repair which discourages them from bothering like using weird security screws that most people aren't going to have a suitable driver for.
