    I actually like the movement in the SKX. That non hacking non-hand winding movement is very simple. And the simplicity creates a feeling of increased durability.

  • @renebense
    @renebense Před 5 lety +66

    Always that lack of handwinding as a negative. Come on guys. Try to pick up a SKX without making it run....try it, you can't. The slightest movement and it runs. Put it on and it runs the whole day. No problem at all. OK try handwinding. For a start you have to unscrew the crown, then you have to handwind it and then screw the crown in again. That is much more work and it wears out the seal of the crown as well. To me no hand winding is a positive.

    • @suprxmestorm7090
      @suprxmestorm7090 Před 5 lety +7

      Rene Bense Yeah I don’t get the whole hand winding craze when you can just shake the watch.

    • @FatSamEIE
      @FatSamEIE Před 5 lety +4

      To be honest I agree and also feel the hardlex is not an issue. I've owned pretty much every modern mechanical seiko diver and only had an issue with hardlex once (my 2yo daughter through a sumo on the floor and it had a slight mark).
      Hacking is also not a feature on some high end brands and watches and it's easy to back wind/hack too.
      Basically we(in this hobby) make a mountain out of minute details because ultimately all watches are redundant and we try to justify our insane hobby (imho)

    • @Andrew-J316
      @Andrew-J316 Před 5 lety +1

      No hand winding drives me nuts on this watch and is one reason Seiko is phasing this movement soon. I have several watches. If you wear the SKX every day no issues. If you rotate your watches then yes hand winding is needed. I don't want to invest in a watch winder just because of this watch. The mod community is replacing the movements because of this! It's a nice watch indeed It just needs hand winding!

    I have another analogy. The Seiko completes you, it never precedes you. It is the most optimum by considering so many factors instead of being the best in several attributes only. It is simply the everyday watch, a companion watch, make so many senses watch.
    But if we must stand out of the crowd once for a while, we can wear the GS.

    Hello. I own a Seiko Pepsi with over a hundred dives to it's log (among which a -65 metres) and it's been running beautifully for more than ten years. It has been a bit fast during the first eight years (+ 3 minutes/month), and the accuracy has improved over the last two years, so I guess the frictions in the movement are increasing a little... But, so far, so good! This is by far the best watch I've ever had. At the time, I paid 200€ for this timepiece, and that was (as time has told) really worth it! Seiko is a high quality and reliable brand with reasonable prices. A friend of mine bought a 600€ Tissot that got full of water after five -30 metres dives (maybe an expensive fake... ). But if you don't dive, I believe any middle of the road fake or cheaper brand should do the job. And speaking about accuracy, we all have atomic controled time on our smartphones... When Covid period is over (and international postal service back to normal), I may go for a Russian "Vostok" watch ( meranom.com/en/amphibian-classic/ ) which I discovered recently. Automatic and waterproof, some original designs, same factory since 1942 and appointed by the Russian army. From 60$ to 300$, but same movement inside. They also have more expensive and designer models fitted with some Japanese movement.

    Totally get what you’re saying about this watch being analogous to a favourite pair of jeans. That’s a really good observation. I have owned my SKX009K2 now for over a year and it is my absolute go-to leisure time watch. I have a Seiko SUP880 Tank dress watch for more formal occasions, which I also love but for very different reasons. It seems Seiko really delivers, whatever the market.

  • @SergheiRO
    @SergheiRO Před 4 lety +3

    Thing with these SKX divers is that they got the design absolutely spot on. It's hard to make it distinctive, super legible, and stylish at the same time, but they accomplished this feat which is usually reserved for higher end pieces. SKX popularity is tied to its design (both case and dial) and to its ISO rating.

  • @m2pozad
    @m2pozad Před 4 lety +3

    So strange! I had no interest in this 7s26 based watch, I already have a much better Seiko diver. Then it got discontinued. So I thought, for the sake of the collection, let's get one. Then the magic started. It had to be the 'J' version, so it needed a jubilee for completeness. Got it. The spring bars are non-shouldered. So I cut off the rubber strap and put it on a couple NATOs for a while. Well damn, I now love this thing, and don't even really know why. For now, it's on my wrist by day and on a winder by night, as a dominant part of the rotation. My 180 degree turnaround has me doubting any kind of pre-judgment. Live and learn.

    The first watch I would buy back is the watch I wear the most often. A Zelos Aurora with a yellow dial with the second being a Seiko SSK003. Given how one is easier to find than the other I suspect it would be the SSK003 Batman GMT that I would end up getting first. Not the most accurate watch, not the toughest watch, would love a screw down crown on it but its a watch that just feels right when you wear it

The pastures are not as green on the other side as what people would normally think or suggest.

      The same goes with the SARB ( eg 033/035) or the SARG (eg 009 ) bracelets. I see that many people likes to pick on them, perhaps just bec they are cheap. The end-links and the centre link of these bracelets are actually detached like those of the Grand Seiko though not as flexible, but, they are more comfortable on the wrist than the swiss-made ones bec they curve easier. And, the brush finish is extremely good for the price you pay. They are also very accurate watches. My SARB 033 is actually more accurate than some of my Superlative Rolex. Also, the Rolex has a high tendency to register negative times.

    It's become like a pet for me, like an old friend. There's just something special about it. By far my most worn watch, mabye 95% of wearingtime is this skx.
    Love it, love the bracelet, i love that it's kinda wonky and wierd and misaligned. Like a person, nobody is perfect and the SKX kind of embodies that somehow.

Thoroughly enjoyed watching this review and I cannot find anything that I disagree with you about this watch. When you mentioned about the depth and the speed of cars, I was also thinking about 'made in Japan' label. Some people are willing to pay more for the writing on the dial 'made in Japan' even though the quality between J version and K version probably about the same? Agreed, got mine finally in yesterday. No hacking, no bigy. But, no hand winding while on rotation is a bit of an annoyance. Didn't realise it has the same movement as the skx007. On the other hand it demands more wrist time. Hahaha

  • @dangerspouse4741
    @dangerspouse4741 Před 6 lety +1

    I've seen a lot of reviews of this watch, but only a few as entertaining as this one. Great job. (I loved the "007-Bond" joke, obvious as it was :) ) I wouldn't buy this watch myself because I'm not a diver - I don't even like taking showers - and the spinning bezel would just make me dizzy and nauseated because I'd never stop playing with it. But for what it is, and how much it costs, it's seems like everyone agrees it's an excellent example of the genre. It also looks very good on your wrist in those beauty shots. I can see why it would be the one you'd dash back into the flames to save.
    I used to think that the "cannot hand wind" feature would be a deal breaker for me, but now that I have one (an Orient 3-Star) I have to admit I was wrong. Like you, I like my watch despite that. Sometime's there's just something about a piece that lets you overlook otherwise irksome features. Thanks for another terrific review - both of you!

    • @24hourstime
      @24hourstime  Před 6 lety +1

      Thank you, my friend. Isn't it strange how we can love a watch but still recognize all of it's "faults". Lack of hand winding would normally be a deal breaker for me (at this price range) but with this watch it's not a big deal.
      I myself have a little Orient 3-star in my collection. They are great watches and very hard to beat value for money. Although, if I'm honest I am not wearing mine all that much but I know for sure that it will never leave my collection.
      All the best, Oleg and Bond.

    Hello Oleg & Bond! Another great review from you two! Bond prefers the 007! ;-) Oleg, I'm with you on the key issues. I like the look & size of the watch, I'm also a fan of the jubilee bracelet, to me it's unique & comfortable. The lack of sapphire bugs me a little, but I can live without it. However, I can't accept an entry level mvmt. without hand winding or hacking for approx. $200! When Seiko replaces the 7s26 with the 4r36, I'll buy one! Til then, my go to beater is Vostok Scuba Dude!

    • @24hourstime
      @24hourstime  Před 6 lety +1

      Hello my friend. Yes, the lack of sapphire and the shortcuts with the bracelet aren't too bad. But I have to agree lack of hand winding on a $200 watch is ridiculous. There are watches that cost half this SKX and have NH35 movement. I got a Vostok Suba Dude recently. Videos about it are coming soon:)
      All the best, Oleg and Bond.

    • @TheGoodwolfe
      @TheGoodwolfe Před 6 lety +1

      Hi Oleg, yes, I understand the loyal fan base that the SKX has, even with it's shortcomings, as sometimes a watch just has so much character, it enables you overlook it's imperfections. That's the way I feel about the Vostok Amphibian "Scuba Dude"! As a non-diver myself, issues like a friction based bi-directional bezel, or a wobbly crown don't bother me. It's cool & unique!

    11:41 my wife looks as bored as that dog when I rant about watches. Its an expression that seems to say "oh god here he goes again...* Sigh *"
    If i had that watch i would be happy with all the dings and scratches that it gets. I recently watched a hodinkee talking watches episode where they interviewed this old man who is a navy seal war veteran his name is Moki i think, unlike other previous guests this old man only had three watches which he was given to him when he joined the Navy ranks. Back then they handed out Tudor watches!! What a great time to live in!! He had two tudors and a rolex submariner. And his tudors and rolex were all really beaten up-all scratched and dings and dents, but working flawlessly. At first I was horrified but when he told the stories behind each watch and what he and his watches went thru in the navy i was really enamoured. At that time I decided, if i were to hv a beater watch, I am gonna beat it. I am gonna have fun with it and it will be with me through thick and thin. We can all have great watches in great condition but a watch that has a story to tell is just priceless, you cannot put a price tag on that.

Very comfortable, looks good, cheap, light & tho I'm reluctant to admit it to myself,so far the 7s26 has been more accurate than my much beloved Turtle's 4r36!! Great watch, great review. Good review. The only thing I would like to know that you didn't specifically touch on, is if the jubilee bracelet has all solid links? I know that the outer 2 are on either side of the 5 piece band, but my question is the inner 3 links. I know that the more expensive mod replacement bracelets are, and from my experience with other watches with this style of bracelet I believe that if you upgraded to a heavier duty bracelet with scissor style clasp you would enjoy this model even more, for the shear balance that it provides. Good job

    I agree with you about the complaints on the stamped metal clasps and hollow links being very personal. Back in the early 80’s I had a 1969 Rolex Explorer 1016 with a pressure fit clasp. It was horrid and always came unfastened. I had to bend the metal to get a tighter connection. Anyhow, I destroyed that watch replacing a klystron tube in a satellite up link transmitter. Very strong magnetic field. 😜 Rolex had to start somewhere with the clasps and bracelets.
    Enjoy the watches you have and say hi to Bond!
