    Both his "potential" and difficulty reputation he has is a big remnant from his Smash 4 reputation, Id say. There he was a lot more mid/low tier so he had to use a lot of tech to function as a character, like MALLC everytime he landed like he was from Meele etc. In Ultimate since he is a lot better, most of his tech are more bonus things you can learn, and not obligatory for the character to function. So his skill floor is a lot lower, making him a lot easier to learn/pick up as the video says. His skill ceiling is probably still the same (very high), because of how many more variables thats involved in a match at any given time as well as Monado tech, so you need really good Mental Stack to play him optimally. He also only has like 2 moves he can use reactionally so you need to plan a lot ahead/see the future IRL kind off to play him well.
    But yeah it only takes like an hour really to learn him, he only has one really complicated move/mechanic and he is very fun. Also a great counterpick/anti meta character cause he has a lot of meta relevant winning matchups, like Steve, Kazuya and Mario. (He also doesnt really have losing MUs to DLC characters).
    Resources for learning him if you are interested:
    shulkxenoblade.com/ - dobercorgi.info/ - And the Discord ofc

      @TreyMM-qz4wg Steve has a pretty damn good disadvantage state because of anvil and mine cart. He just doesn’t have disadvantage hax like mythra and shulk. If you ask any top players, they will tell you Steve doesn’t lose any matchups, because he plays his own game. Mkleo says that, maister says that, tweek says that, spargo says that, and Marss says that. You know what all those players have in common? They’ve all beaten Acola. I’m just going by what they say.
      The only character that possible beats Steve is ZSS. And it’s not that Steve is invincible either, it’s just that you HAVE to play better than the Steve in order to beat them. You can’t just “lol you got hit so now you die” to Steve, at least not a top player steve, unless you’re zss. Shulk can’t make steve explode in 1 hit because Steve has a long and deep and mixable recovery and shulk has disadvantage hax so I’d say the matchup is even. I’ve never seen a shulk make a Steve look like he’s playing at a disadvantage.

    I feel like this actually echoes a lot of sentiment about Shulk. He's a swordie, and swordies are always easy to pick up at a basic level. His janky ledge snap and side B are unfortunate (seriously, WHY does it need to act that way in the air?!) but those aren't really that bad with practice. Shulk is still balanced around his monado arts though and that means that fundies shulk will only get you so far.

  • @DarkSpineShadow343
    @DarkSpineShadow343 Před 10 měsíci +6

    As someone who's been a Shulk main since smash 4, don't beat yourself up too much over SD'ing. It happens. I still do it occasionally despite how much experience I have with the dude. I'd say killing yourself with backslash is a rite of passage for being a Shulk main lol.
    But yeah no Shulk really isn't as hard as people say, and I'll die on that hill. All the complicated tech he has is in no way necessary to succeed with him, and his Monado arts aren't difficult to understand fundamentally. And outside of the Monado arts, he's rather easy. Nair and Fair almost play the game for you sometimes (although you obviously should use more of his kit than just that, he's got a lot of great stuff). Shulk challenges your situational awareness more than anything. And personally, good situational awareness is easier for me to come to grips with in a match than the high execution combos you'd need to learn with, let's say for example Sheik at higher levels. You essentially need to have a plan in the back of your mind of when's the best time to use your resources. It's a lot like playing the game he's from in that regard, which I think is pretty neat design.

    I think they really translated the feeling of Xenoblade combat into smash pretty well! Both systems are easy to learn, but there's alot of optimization you can do - which often gets in the way of a lot of people enjoying it 😅

      @benross9174 Před 11 měsíci +6

      You have to do a lot of tomahawk grabs/other mix ups to beat it, not unbeatable. But yeah if people can parry Ike nair in 2019 people can parry Shulk nair in 2023. Definally the best universal counterplay to deal with Shulk, other than maybe Monado art counterplay

    • @TuesdayTastic
      @TuesdayTastic  Před 11 měsíci +2

      Parry is absolutely the best option. I've hit people who spot dodged my Nair at the startup and then got them with the tail end of it.

  • @elijmin2
    @elijmin2 Před 11 měsíci +8

    Very well made video.
    Shulk is a very hard character though and I do not think that he is a character that's viable to secondary/pocket. Its the same reason why you don't see many successful secondary Steves, he's the type of character you need to fully main for success. His MUs require knowing when to use each art in each scenario vs every character making him hard to just have on the backburner.
    Also I don't think dial storage is a useful tech its definitely a waste of time to learn and only has really niche uses.
    btw, Donkey Kong is a +1 MU for Shulk, you just don't know how to play it

    • @elijmin2
      @elijmin2 Před 11 měsíci +1

      Also even though you were SDing with jump art, I think you should always open the dial to switch to it since its a lot more fast. It can be tough to get used to the timing so you don't misinput backslash tho.

    • @TuesdayTastic
      @TuesdayTastic  Před 11 měsíci +2

      Happy to see you here on my video! Shulk definitely has the tools to make DK a better matchup but what would you say I'd need to do to play the matchup better? I was just getting smothered before any of my moves could come out.

      Yes man! I watch all your character crisis videos lol, I was waiting for the Shulk one. I have a VOD vs ChunkyKong if you wanna watch it: czcams.com/video/cMxf0KqT0lg/video.html
      I practice the DK MU a lot so I feel like I'm really good at it. Even though I agree DK can stuff shulks aerials out, his options to do so are really obvious and can typically always be punished by airslash OOS so you can force DK to always make the first move. Really its just worrying about wheter or not the DK is gonna grab or do an attack which can both be beaten by smart movement.@@TuesdayTastic

    Had zero clue how meta relevant this character is! According to the best, Shulk straight up beats the trio of Steve, G&W and Cloud.
    Sonix says Sonic beats him, however he’s been lost to Cloud and Corrin lately which shows a character that can ledge trap Sonic is probably more then doable. Even for now.
    ADDITIONALLY, he’s good against top players!
    He beats Fox, ZSS(Sux), gimmick characters, and more!

    • @TuesdayTastic
      @TuesdayTastic  Před 7 měsíci +1

      @@TuesdayTastic 💪
      I cant see it for Ike. I think that character is significantly carried by online as he’s just way too slow in the real world. Even if people parry Shulk, characters sword is just so massive, the distance alone could work out for him it be safe. Shulk has similar weakness but can pop Monado for mobility when under pressure or when he needs pressure.

    I picked up Shulk back in Smash 4. It felt like he had a better survivabillity
    His Ultimate iteration is the "max monado art" which gives alittle more power to the arts while increasing the risk much greater
    His tilts are just iffy, d-tilt is useless unless following up a d-throw
    His up-b had more air time in Smash 4, inbetween his uprise, wait and then swing forward

    • @TuesdayTastic
      @TuesdayTastic  Před 11 měsíci +3

      I actually found his down tilt to be really useful since it was his longest grounded poke. Shulk likes to jump so not committing to a jump is pretty important when your opponent has caught onto that.

    It’s not shulk if you’re not SDing to frame data, monado art, or airslash related BS constantly at the beginning. One thing that is a huge game changer for him is that rising shorthop backwards facing nairs are extremely busted for him. He does the whole circle of death around him and if you hit the end part it combos into dtilt, ftilt, or dash attack. You can also do it oos while drifting away and it’s extremely difficult to punish. Good video either way, though you gotta admit that his normals are a bit harder to use than you thought because of their frame data + spacing well with shulk’s weird air mobility!

    • @TuesdayTastic
      @TuesdayTastic  Před 8 měsíci

      They are hard to use because of the bad frame data but the tradeoff is that spacing becomes incredibly easy.

    • @akfirez4146
      @akfirez4146 Před 8 měsíci

      @@TuesdayTastic eh I disagree, because he has bottom 20 air acceleration so it can be difficult to properly fade back on moves + the startup allows people to change their positioning while your move is coming out by reacting to your jumps to force you to misspace. Even with thousands of hours on him I still find him difficult to control.
