For me, a great singer is always the standout. That means a uniqueness of tone, technique and personality. I'm really good at judging who a singer is by those three ingredients. Clarity and sincerity always does it for me. *LIVE SINGING!!!* Now, I know that "nobody's perfect" and yadda, yadda, yadda, but for real, for real, whatever you do in that studio, you best be able to do it live and on the spot. No silly excuses. No vocal illusions (although I do enjoy a lot of them). Just *sing.* Ledisi and Kelly Price are always a joy to see live because whatever they done did on record, they often times eclipse it live. Mr. Charlie Wilson sounds exactly like the records he recorded 40+ years ago. I haven't heard Mr. Eldra DeBarge sing live in a minute, but he sounds like his records as well. I love rich, warm, chocolate voices like Mr. Will Downing. I love aggressive and cocky voices like Mr. Johnny Gill. I love confident and supreme voices like Ms. Whitney Houston. Now, Big Sis, all of them riffs and runs are nice, but whew! Nowadays singers take it way too far and it makes the song sound bad. Is it really necessary to do a riff or a run on every single word of the song? It sounds awful. I enjoy vocal acrobatics when they make sense, but nowadays...it's a total drag. Just riffin' and runnin', riffin' and runnin'. I feel like since there's a surplus of bad singing out there, the artists who can really sing try to make up for it by doin' hella much w/ the vocal acrobatics. 200 riffs and runs w/o an ounce of soul.

naturally, she sang naturally as just something she loved. She wasn't a seasoned professional vocalist when she 1st started out where she knew how to maintain her voice, properly.
@@SirDave she was a signed artist, paid to sing, -making it her profession and her a professional, as opposed to a novice or aspiring artist. I get her not having the necessary training initially but there are obviously a lot of unseasoned artists who are nonetheless professionals. This is the point I was making lol can’t wait to see her performance tonight!!
I think she probably meant to say that she wasn't professionally trained when she first started out like some artists that came in already professionally trained.
