Monica actually had the best performance that night! She just got up and flat foot sang. She didn’t need dizzying runs or over the top production to enhance her performance. I think nowadays people are confusing vocal layering, heavy production and heavy vocal acrobats throughout a song as great singing. But remember Phyllis Hyman, Luther, Whitney, Marvin Gaye etc they were flat foot singers that just grabbed the mic and let it rip and that’s where Monica lives!
