How often do you eat at your local Chinese takeaway? Food Hygiene Inspectors Johnny and Faye arrive at a Chinese restaurant for a routine inspection and are shocked by what they discover.
Knowing that their decisions may affect the people’s livelihoods, Johnny and Faye have to strike a balance between protecting the public and allowing the restaurant to correct their errors.
But their job is made more difficult when nobody speaks English and the owners are creative with the truth... But Johnny and Faye left no stone unturned, for better or worse.
Chow Mein anyone?

As an ex chef for over 21 years. Jeez, that place is clean and kitchen looks in great condition compared to other places. If it was an appointment inspection, then shame on them. Would had taken a few hours to clean up and create some record keeping.
That is the part that I found disappointing, it was not a random inspection but an appointment. Surely they could have got the staff to spend 10 minutes cleaning the floors with a mop and brush, also giving the ice machine a scrub. Would have saved themselves a lot of hassle.
@@jcshay8121 People only clean places of dirt they can see. A microwave is a prime example of food spatter on the top that people do not clean. My old place had 5 stars and as the boss, got on my hands and knees to clean the floor, cus no one cares about my business as I do.

I have worked multiple times in a restaurant where the colour code is just thrown out the window.....
Oh right, ok thank you.
So long as only veg is cut there, whats the issue? If they have their own color code then it works, but given the rest of the video I highly doubt they do.
Close it down until it’s clean simple
So they are concerned about the food safety and obv the staff is clueless but "they have not reached a conclusion". What was the point of that visit in the first place then?
I'll answer you. I'm a UK inspector.
They would have visited for two reasons. First one is it could've been a routine inspection, so they just turn up and inspect them. Second reason could be that there's been a complaint or food poisoning/outbreak to investigate.
I watched the video ages ago and back on here because of a notification so can't remember what happened in the video but to answer your question about the conclusion bit, that might've just been for the TV crew or the way they edited the inspection.
Typically at the end of the inspection we will know what (in the UK) National Food Hygiene Rating Scheme score to issue them and provide a written report on site of the contraventions for them to put right.
I'm the worst instances, it's too much to write on site so typically lots of evidential photographs are taken and we give them a brief summary before leaving them write an official letter detailing all the contraventions and work out their hygiene score separately due to all the issues. The score determination is based on a guidance document and isn't plucked out of thin air.
I hope that answers your questions.
The only place I'd eat out is my local pub. The food inspectors always look at them around 12.30 and have their lunch in the place. That speaks volumes to me.
This “filth” is literally the standard in America for fast food restaurants nowadays. It’s also a shame for the workers to act ignorant to what the heath inspectors are saying. Trying to get away with playing dumb although I am sure they were embarrassed, as anyone should be in this situation.
About 25 years ago I remmeber a Chinese restaurant in Liverpool where a woman was taken to hospital as she had a bone stuck in her throat the bone was removed and it was later discovered that the bone was a rat bone.
💀 god !!
My uncle walked around the back of a Chinese restaurant and he saw what he thought were cat skins in a bin. Later that Chinese was in the newspapers for serving cat curry. 🐈
This restaurant might be much more cleaner than many other chinese restaurants.
It's remind me the day an immigration officer was asking a Chinese guys about their documents but the guy who speaks well English just ignored like he doesn't even know e of the English... hahah
we are so lucky all restaurants and takeaways in the uk have routine checks like this here in the UK, can you imagine how bad it would be if it wasn't a priority like other countries
Can’t they close the restaurant down until they can be absolutely sure it’s up to standards??
And if not why not??
Diwondermum worse would do is give them a zero, explain what actions need to be taken and force them to display it.
Agreed, shutting them down (or starting to) would concentrate the staff’s minds and probably improve their English instantly!
The Chinese restaurant my parents used to bring me to for their buffet when I was a kid was repeatedly closed by the health department for a wide variety of issues, but their food was tasty and cheap, and no one seemed to mind. It eventually closed down because the building itself was condemned. I still remember the way the stairs always moved shakily underfoot every time I crept down to the dark, scary bathroom in the basement.
They should to give them a wake up but than theirs the side that they could have had a bad day so they give them multiple chances to fix their restaurants also theirs people who's jobs and business are on the line but still they're too kind, inspectors aren't regular so they could be operating for ages with poor standards
@@NoJusticeNoPeace was it by any chance in Yakima? You're explaining The Royale Buffet here accurately. They even closed too

What I’m more worried about is the fact the health inspectors leave saying “they are worried” but allowing the business to continue trading in a hazardous manner! Go team heath inspector! (Not)
They’d go crazy if they went to a restaurant in China...
After living in China for many years, one thing I have realised is that the word hygiene does not exist. The vast majority of food and personal hygiene practices in China are almost on a medieval level.
Really? But like in every place or just in low cost restaurants?
Asami Cat The vast majority of restaurants are low budget, as only foreigners and rich Chinese eat at high-end restaurants, of which there are very few of in comparison, and only exist as a small proportion in the big cities. Typically, people get their food daily from wet markets, where food is handled without gloves and sanitised surfaces. It’s typical to see meat being strung up all day along the sides of roads or lying on the ground or dirty surfaces, without refrigeration. Cooked foods and vegetables are usually placed next to raw products and animals are freshly slaughtered out of their cages and boxes, with the blood just dripping all over the floors. The animals generally aren’t kept in good conditions either.. Simply do a search for wet markets in China and you’ll see what I mean. The coronavirus came from a wet market, where again sanitary practices are non-existent - there’s no food hygiene laws in China, or at least none that are taken seriously. As for personal hygiene, it’s rare to find soap and paper towels in washrooms. Few people use deodorant or perfume and visits to the dentist only happen if there’s a serious need, so no regular cleaning and check ups. Add in the amount of spitting down the street and public urination and defecation (granted mostly done by children that parents allow to happen) I guess it’s just a cultural thing, but it’s certainly not pleasant. Probably also because China, despite many advances (some of which are in many ways more advanced than the rest of the world), is still a developing country and the people just need more educating. Understand that this is a huge generalisation, so not all Chinese have the same standards of hygiene practice, but from my personal experience the vast majority of the country is like this.
@@jackjohnson337 oh ok, I understand. The reality is worse than i thought because i thought that only small villages were like this or just a little part of street markets
@@jackjohnson337 you're spot on, although pretty much all of these are done by the "boomer" generation.

I work in a chinese restaurant in australia and this is appalling, at our place u have to know basic english for a job so when people come in like this they can ask all the questions needed, they are faking it bc they are scared they are going to get in trouble.
They do speak basic English, they pretend not to it's common here. Because why the fuck would you incriminate yourself.
god damn, the inspectors are kinda useless at their job, you'd think they'd have someone who could at least translate. They were enough violations to shut the resturant down for at least a day. Yikes. A pair of wet noodles really. They were kinda cringey.
There are not enough violations to close it down. Something really wrong has to happen before a closure otherwise it is warning after warning with inspections in between to make sure compliance is adhered to.
There is a safer food folder that has sections to be filled in. If you don't have that book, regardless how compliant you are you can't get more than 3 stars - that is bureaucracy.
Too right, we have poor hygiene in a lot of local takeaway places in Nottinghamshire uk. Any takeaway owner wishing to contradict me in the Ashfield area, get in touch, I will come and do a surprise visit. No booking allowed and a certificate will be issued that’s worth having because its from the customers not the government. It will also be rated on quality and authenticity.

From experience virtually any establishment can suffer from poor cleaning and hygiene practices as staff are poorly paid and over worked and what the public can't see don't matter
They were all playing the game “I don’t speak English” to play dumb and skirt responsibility. These inspectors should have closed the restaurant until the manager showed up (doubt he was in London). Hit them in the pocketbook and things will change. In the meantime they get to continue making people sick. Lovely.
