I taught myself to play at 16. That was 30 years ago. I pretty much haven't gotten any better ever since.
same
Haha me too. I thought I'd be amazing now by proxy.
Me too, you probably (like me) are playing on and off and didn't take it seriously enough.
Well now it's time for a change 💪🎼
@@viking2304 yes it is
I don`t have many regrets, but one I do have is that I didn`t start playing until I was in my 40s. I know I`ll never progress beyond chords and riffs, no mater how I try :(

@LPS IITU ja linnea videot Why is it sad?
For me it was:
"Ya gotta get a metronome"

Herra Makunautinto fortunately*
@allu1231 it's great that people don't have to buy a million different things
Just discovered your channel, and I see I have a lot of catching up to do. Really dig your videos. So educational, chill and spot on. Keep it up!
I also watched your pinch harmonics vid. And man, I've never had such a nice tutorial like these. I keep watching you. I already improved my playing within a week. Thx man. Keep it up
Gotta love Robert! He is a down to earth, and helpful dude. I like watching his vids even if I am not trying to learn something, he is just great as he always gives some good advice and I personally always get a new perspective, and learn something without even expecting it!!! Keep it goin Rob!!! You are the man.
"what kind of guitarist are you?"
Me: lazy! Oh wait not an option?
Thank you so much for these lessons! Every day I’m sitting down with these lessons with my metronome. The improvements are unreal
*How to play really fast in 5 steps* (At least the way i learned)

Lawyer Morty What about your pog collection?
Really great lesson once again. I always pick up something new to work on by watching your vids. Quickly followed by hand cramps. LOL. Thanks for the great work, Robert!
I start slow to a metronome and once muscle memory is there gradually increase speed while playing clean with good tone and accurately. So far I have increased from 30BPM to 130BPM for most runs. Goal is 300 BPM for metal.
Did you make it?
Awesome technique video. Thank you for sharing! I enjoy most all of your content, but this one gets an extra star by it. I don't know how I missed it a few months ago. Thank you CZcams for suggesting it!
What I really love about this man is his personality. Robert you are so humble and you really put out amazing lessons. I appreciate all that you do. I keep challenging myself to get better. When I think back to the very beginning and where I am now! I have come a very long way. It’s been a frustrating as hell journey at times but I wouldn’t change a thing. It’s made me the guitar player that I have become! I have poured my heart and soul into getting better. I am obsessed with getting better and being the best I can be. It’s extremely important to me.,
The triad exercise just by itself is amazing! Thank you!
One thing that helps me play faster is not to try too hard to play faster.
You gotta relax and not to overly tense your hands while playing.
Your tone always amazes me Rob.. also the BEST guitar youtuber out there, you've been helping me so much with my guitar playing and my musicianship. Much love from Norway!!
You have a real gift for teaching--and an insight into the instrument and player abilities that is rare. Great video! Thanks! Now, if I could just find the motivation...
Thanks so much for doing this man I’ve been looking for a video like this for so long made by a person I trust.
Man you’re showing me stuff that I definitely should’ve learned a LONG time ago!! I’m so far behind in my playing than I should be to have been playing basically 32 years! In some ways I haven’t moved further than a beginner’s stage of my playing.
Most simple and effective hints! Really dig your content a while now, thx. Hope you are doing well
It's like strength training. Progressive overload. Progressive acceleration.
Great video. I’ve been playing guitar for over 30 years and I’m kind of stuck in my ways of playing. This will definitely help.
Your videos are great and easy for older beginners like myself. Nice and clear to follow as well. :)
dude this video is exactly what i needed ! Thank you so much !
Signed up for the course after this one. Been ghosting this channel for months without subscribing, but this video and the recent influx of content cements it.
I love -big brother- Robert Baker
Brings me back when starting 👍🙌 great instructions there 😎🎸👏
Love it . So clear of a lesson . Thank you
This was a great lesson man! Keep it up!
Thanks for doing what you do! We need more people like yourself.
Good stuff! Thanks Robert!
This is a breath of fresh air! Nicely done!
Dude what a killer lesson, thank you so much. I’ve been getting better at every aspect of my guitar playing but I’ve felt the speed hasn’t really changed at all. I love rock guitar (as you probably know) and part of it are the shreddy things. Will give these exercises a proper go and let you know how it goes. Keep up the awesome work, brother!
How did it go?
Just wanna say that always find something good and inspiring to get me motivated again so thanks for all your tutorials 👍🎸
Thats a very helpful lesson, thank you Robert
Great tips Robert! Super helpful!!
This is such a great lesson! Thank you so much, Robert. I've been practicing lead on electric a lot recently and this was really helpful. Going to practice this later. :)
I am looking forward to an update video on your electric guitar progress!
@@RyanPortugal Thanks! I'll be updating soon. :)
Duder!! Gotta love those triad inversions! Keep doing the good stuff my brother!!!!!!!!!! 🤘😁🤘✋
What you have done for my journey is astonishing. The sensei!
Great lesson Robert! Thanks man!
Man, you have been cranking out the content.. It's awesome, really enjoy it, just be careful, I've been studying a lot about being a youtuber & burnout is a huge factor... Hope all is well, have a great day, take it easy...
@Roy Batty Na, actually repetition and staying within your niche only builds your brand stronger... look at some of the big CZcamsrs, like Gary Vee or Casey Neistat, they do basically the same thing over & over and only grow bigger....
This looks really helpful. Thank you!
great class maestro Robert!
I’ve worked on this since you posted it. It does work, I still not fast but I can see progress.
the pick holding technique is very important, i used to hold the pick so that i couldn't play fast, and was very very hard change my picking technique, i was very used to it.
A fantastic lesson ....ty ...well put together ..😎
Excellent stuff. Thank you.
Watching many other guitar channels, they are good, some better than others. But this is spot on for me. Learning and practice that is fun and interesting on the hands and ear, so, it's something you end up doing more, and that's the point.
I had a major speed increase when I started to learn the intro to Thunderstruck. That really forces you to be precise.
1 hand tapping my guy😂
@@boseifrit5480 it's originally picked not tapped
Wrong, numb skull.
Fascinating. I've never seen it broken down this way. I'm the last type, I suppose. I use hammer-ons and pull-offs wherever I can, as long as it doesn't seriously harm the sound I want. This probably stems from my piano background.
This is great ! The chord change thing is really useful to . Being a bass player forever and now adding guitar so late here in life , I am trying to deal with the 6 small strings and especially that area . I know decent theory so guitar is even making my Bass playing more open view too .
nice work RB awesome rig/lab you got there!
Jimmy Favereau
Id call it a studio
That Les Paul is beautiful. Also the room is Great and whatever the weather is doing outside looks awesome too!!
very good video it helped a lot. i've always liked hammer ons and pull offs but when i realised i naturally economy pick through scale i used to just concentrate on that but now adding the two together it just feels right.
Dude! You have no idea how much time I spend watching your videos every day. You are inspiring me to take my playing where it has never been before. Thank You so much
Awesome lesson man, packed full of nutrition haha !! Good stuff 👌
Some good exercises. Interesting doing the chord progression one as I don't use a pick. Still good for increasing finger picking speed.
Excellent teacher thanks Robert
Great lesson ,thank you.
Good lesson. What you explain as 'economy picking' is actually 'inside alternate picking'. Economy picking is something different, but it is typically used in conjunction with alternate picking or legato playing.
Awesome video man!!
Nice lesson that helped me realize few things.
Last exercise is killer nice work dude👍
This video was very helpful to me. I have been working on increasing speeds and can’t seem to make much progress yet. But I am hopeful now that I saw this because I have trouble keeping my pinkie from flying. I see your pinkie flies and you can play fast, so it gives me hope
Awesome lesson my brother......
this video is great,I can alredy do the most of the exercise but now i have to work on speed and on clear tone.tnx
Fab lesson. Great tips 👍
Sweet lesson Thanks
Downward pickslanting brought my speed to a level I previously just accepted I could never reach. Love your channel my guy ✌🏻❤️
Great lesson! Just the basic kind of stuff I've been working on. I took some years off from playing, and just got in my first band a year ago ( playing 80s punk/skater/metal covers). I'm 54, and trying to get my pinky to work again is causing me slight fits, hahaha.
thank you very much for this video Robert! this was exactly what I needed right now :D I always have that problem that I can't play a lick long enough because I try to pick every note. now with the hammer ons its much easier for me :)
Thanx Robert that’s gold
You r great man thanks for the help
Cant believe this is a free lesson thanx RB. WOOOOooooo
I've been trying to learn economy picking for weeks with no success because I was told I couldn't play very fast with alternate picking (I play mainly alt. rock/Grunge so I don't even wanna be that fast). This video just blew my mind.
I love your videos. I don't play like any of the styles you suggested,
I love the chord practice it's just what I need I dont practice my chords enough anyways all of this is great and great video as always
Excellent lesson. Metronome in the house. Thanks
Robert is a great gutiar player and a good teacher
I put your vids on even when I’m just fiddling around with string change or practicing etc it’s great background sound and I always watch it again anyway lol creates a cool atmosphere is what I’m saying 🤟🤟🎸🎶
I didn't grab my metronome yet cuz first I have to familiarize my mind with the changes. I've been working on triads but they've never been this fun. The shapes are new to me so it's not a steep learning curve, but the ideas are so fresh and well taught
7:27 I wasn't paying attention and heard "before, we were doing as porno sequence"
Which of course is how I'll refer to a 4 note sequence for the rest of time.
That third exercise reminds me of life force by Vinnie Moore, it has the same picking dynamic just faster and on more strings, you should look vinnie up if you haven’t seen him, he has really improved my playing and is shreddy and places notes well, not a very common combo. Thanks Robert, will definitely use to teach my students!
LOVE that record. I don't know if it was just not well made or not, but I had to re-buy it. Could be, I just wore it the hell out! The breakdown in Hero Without Honor makes the hair on the back of my neck stand up every time.
Thank you SO much!
You're the teach I've been looking for
Live these vids.
Great video, I’ve been playing for years and I suffer from a form of Tourette’s that causes me to shake quite badly so I struggle with speed and accuracy with my picking hand. Definitely going to give this a try. Thanks.
I have tourette's as well. Mine us usually facial ticks or whatnot.
I suffered from it as a kid. Would have face twitches, but it was, at it's root, voluntary. It was self-stimming behavior really.
I started smoking weed and got rid of like 3 different tiks. Been smoking ever since.
So get your lessons. Magic!
Good tip Robert
Good lesson
I'm trying to play faster but that opening rift wasn't even as fast as I can play so hopefully this is useful. Very clean though and gret sound though, props.
Watched it all and youre right this is what i need for this one speed hiccup im facing. Thank you! I basically need to learn how to pick faster runs and some fast hammer on/off runs with 3 notes per string or fast variations between two strings. Idk lol. Basically what you started doing 1/3 of the way through the video. So ty
Great video
Great vid, keep up the great work Robert!
I love these exercises
Amazing video. Very helpful guitar Jesus.
Lots of coffee and chocolates then hybrid picking and sweeps
Delay Makes you sound faster sometimes
I think ive bookmarked like 85% of all the vids ive watched of yours haha..
Same. I just save them to watch later.
How do you bookmark? I'd love to be able o make a spot in a video!
@@mrfender5001 If you use chrome, click the the 3 little dots, and then click the star!
@@adamd.6698 oh ok. I thought you were talking about on phone in the CZcams app. I know about it on Chrome. Thanks.
@@mrfender5001 you can make a playlist on youtube to watch later
The arpeggiated chords reminds me of rockin the paradise by styx.. very cool
Awesome!! Can you please do a video maybe on various harmonics for us?
Right now, I'm trying to increase my Speed, so This is perfect to me right now! Thank you!
I like the sound of picking each note.
Let's be honest if your not getting better or faster your not playing enough. I have played since 13 yrs. old I'm now 45 I've grown as a musician because I play every day without fail . I love it though it's pure joy what sucks is inheriting arthritis in my hands and trying to find ways to keep my soul soaring. Lighter gauge strings and changing the way I play with a gentle touch and not as aggressive. I will not stop even if I have to learn to play with my feet!Rock On!!!
Totally agree
Playing every day is the key!
@@ppb1877I’ve put thousands of hours into speed alternate picking and still suck.
