Old Town *Final Trip* 4 years of abuse (S7 E42)

- My time with the Old Town Autopilot 120 has come to an end. We're moving on to another platform for 2024. The AP120 is hands down the toughest kayak I've ever fished from. She took a heck of a beating and never stopped putting me on the fish. It truly is the Little Engine That Could.

Also, Mark hasn't washed that damn kayak in 4 years now.
😂
😂😂😂
and that's why his kayak be praying for rain every time he go out.🙏🏾
🤣
LoL! The ocean washes it while fishing & filming.
Don’t forget about the motor plugs! Had mine two years and am having to replace now. Oldtown only warranty’s plugs for 1 year it’s like they know they are gonna fail wish they would just install the good plugs. Went with minnkota mkr-28 plugs and never looking back! Replace your plugs before you get stranded.
Yeah that one slipped my mind.
Always appreciate your content, Mark! Happy Holidays to you and the family!
Thank you 🙏
Glad to see someone's kayak looks as scuffed up as mine on the bottom. 3 yrs old and going strong. Thanks for sharing this.
Thanks for watching! 🤙
To remove the sacrificial pads - you can probably saw it off next to each screw then remove the plastic around the screw and get the screws out with pliers- or Dremel the screw head with a horizontal line so you can get a flat head screw driver on the screw - wishing you and your family the best for 2024 - tight lines- PuraSal Angler 🙌🏻
Great video, Mark, sad to see you retiring the AP120 but I'm excited and anxious to see what your new fishing platform will be! Mark, I have thoroughly enjoyed joining you on all of your fishing treks of 2023, and I'm looking forward to new adventures in 2024! Mark, I'd like to wish you and your family a Safe, Prosperous and Happy New Year, be safe out there my friend and take care!
We thank you for the wonderful support in 2023. Happy New Year Christine!
From our family up here in Abilene to you and your family Mark, wishing you a very blessed Happy 2024! Looking forward to seeing more of your fishing adventures in the coming new year! Kevin
Happy new year!
Thank you for a great year of training and enjoyable videos for us to watch and learn from... Cant wait to see whats ahead for 2024.... See ya on the water....
Happy new year! 🤙
If I was buying a new kayak I'd definitely go with an Old Town after seeing you use the platform.
They’re built tough.
Thanks to your videos I chose to purchase the 136 at last years fishing expo. I cringe when I run mine into the concrete but then I remember your videos and know it’s not that bad lol I use a trailer but sometimes I still pull it onto the ramps while I get my truck. I hope you stay with the old town family. Can’t wait to see your new ride. Happy new years brother.
Thank you 🙏
Thanks for great videos this year. You sure proved it is a great kayak. Would have preferred it because of autolock and extra width but my Outback is lighter and since adding Texas Power Paddle motor will work good enough.
Thanks for sharing,
by any chance do you ever spray the sheer pin with CRC Heavy Duty Corrosion Inhibitor??
I don't
Thank you for the review. on a side note if you have a dermal you can cut a slot in the head of the screw to get it out.
That’s most likely what I’ll do. Thanks 🤙
I went with the 136 and love it. Subbed your channel right after i got it. Unbelievable how stable they are. I just switched to lithium with black Friday prices. I bet you can fish all weekend now. Thanks for all the kayak info.
Lithium is a back saver.
Thanks Mark
Welcome!
Great video great Kayak. here's to a happy and prosperous new year! and this year the Houston fishing show is early February....
Happy New Year David!!! See you at the show!
l have enjoyed all of your content. definitely a great kayak brand and setup.I know you have a lot of great memories on that kayak.when you replace what's needed.I am looking forward to your new video 😁🐠🐟🐡👍🤙😎
Thanks for watching!
Great video, brother. You're the one that encouraged me into researching this kayak. Hopefully one day I'll be able to afford one. Keep up the great job and Happy New Year to you and your family. Be blessed.
Happy New Year 🤙
Awesome video and product. Happy New Year to you and yours .
Happy new year!
Fantastic insight on that kayak. Great info sir. Thank you.
You bet!
Happy New Year. Thank you for a good year of videos.
Happy new year!
Happy new year Mark. Thank you for a great year of fishing entertainment.
Happy new year!
@@MDLRFishing I know ypure setup with old 18, but have you tried the rod I built Christian? Any input, criticism, or suggestions?
I haven’t used it. Maybe one day I’ll get a chance.
C’Mon Old Town hook Marc up with the new E-pdl Kayak. Not going to lie because of Marc I will have one someday. When I can afford one. A great veteran like him deserves so much more!!!!
Really enjoyed watching your eval of the kayak.
Thanks 🤙
Offats Bayou. Big marina across from Moody Gardens. Was there a couple weeks ago.
Great video, Mark! Are you getting an ePDL? You mentioned replacing the motor and I have a suggestion before you do that was given to me by an authorized Motor Guide repair shop along with the info for the MinnKota counterpart. Any size (thrust) 12v motor can be put into the foot so you could replace the 45 lb with a 55 lb at an authorized MinnKota repair shop in your area. Just a thought, but I remember you commenting on how slow it is.
That’s good to know, thanks.
a dremel tool with small cutting wheel, cut into screws nice and easy and make them straight screws and use that to unscrew them, worked for me at least
That’s the plan 🤙
Mark if you took a drummel tool with the cutting disc and cut a notch in 😊the screw couldn’t you use a flat head screw driver and get it out ? Just a thought !! And a safe and Happy New Year to you and all the Family !!!
That’s the plan, thanks for looking out 🤙.
If those easy outs don’t work the Easy way to get those screws out would be to grind a groove into screw head and use a flat head screwdriver to unscrew (Dremel with grinding disk or grinder with cutoff disc)
Keep up videos 👍🏻
I agree, this last year of fishing was so so. I hope for better this year. Ok now……. What kayak are you using next???
🤐
When you installed the finish finder did you add a fuse or is it OK if I didn't put a fuse on it? Also dose the transducer completely go lower then the kayak or is it a bit tucked in
I don’t have a fuse.
Happy New Year to you and yours...buck
Happy new year!
Can't wait to see what you will be fishing in next year. ePDL???
😉
You already know it.
HAPPY NEW YEAR TO YOU AND YOURS!!
Happy new year!
That shrimp works really well under popping cork
I have one left. The new reel backlashed on me and my leader broke 😂.
Shear pins in emergency just cut a penny nail will work that will fit thru shat and groove in the prop.😊
That’s really good to know, thanks.
Mark, are you running a 60amp breaker on your FPV 50ah trolling motor battery?
I’m not running a fuse between the battery and motor.
@@MDLRFishing Thank you !
👍👍👍👍👍🎣info equipment video
Thanks
That kayak seems like a pretty tough customer. You forgot to mention the issues you had with factory plug where the motor wire connects.
Can’t believe I forgot to mention that.
good info
Thanks
My only concern is if i keep an autopilot 120 for say 4-5 years and the motor goes out is there a chance they would discontinue a replacement and i’d be stuck with a useless hull?
My motor has been abused. Run through oyster, thick mud, bottomed out on boat ramps. Never rinsed after fishing in saltwater. It’s literally been put through the wringer and still works. But as I said, I think it’s on it’s last leg. With proper care who knows how long it would’ve been before it reached its current condition. The Autopilot is a flagship kayak. I don’t think Old Town would abandon it after 5 years. Just my opinion so take it with a grain of salt.
@@MDLRFishing thanks brother, cant wait to get mine!
@@aljohnson1191 its a minn kota 45 lb thrust head and motor , so more than likely there will always be a way to rebuild it. Be thankful that its not an in house design like others have done. Then you probably would be screwed once they drop the model. Old Town did it right on this autopilot to get Minn Kota to work with them.
@@Obxhatmanthinking the same better than the other options like Bixby which is more likely to go out of business
@@slange455 yeah , I have often said , if you really want the best motor driven kayak on the market with I pilot and spot lock. Then do a Wilderness Systems Radar 135 for 1700, Do not buy the peddles , just the hull. Get a Minn Kota , Riptide Terrova with Spot Lock , 12 Volt , 54 inch shaft, 55 lb thrust. Thats 2500. Bow Mount it with a 3D printed bracket that fits the Radar. Then you would have the best of everything on a kayak. Its a great paddling hull , if needed , the best layout of any kayak I have ever used. The best seat on a kayak that I have ever used AIr Pro Max Seat , and you got plenty of storage options in front of you for baits etc. The motor will easily handle anything ya toss at it , its 10 more lbs thrust than the Old Town and you still can have all that with a 100 AH battery for less than an Old Town Autopilot 136. Put a battery box just behind the seat , and you are good to go. I have two radar 135's , I may do just that to one of them. Eventually.
Happy New Year!
Happy new year!
Mark, I got to say man , you definitely have put her through the test. However I have to cringe every time I see that drag. I'll show you some pics of what I'm having done to my trailer for next season. Getting older and I've decided to do this mod to save my back and my kayaks. Once its done , I will be able to load up in the parking lot , then back down the ramp , slide the kayaks into the water , then pull off and get in and fish , then when I come back in , I can back the trailer in , and hook the kayaks to a winch , pull them up on the rails , lock them down , pull into the parking lot , unload , and then leave. Never have to pick these heavy kayaks up again. I have an autopilot 136 , wife has a 360 Hobie PA 14.This is where I got the Idea , similar to what they have done , but I'm using a triton aluminum trailer , I think I paid like 1600 for and I'm incorporating a winch and adjustable in and out and up and down rail system so I can fit any kayaks I have into the channels. I will have a video on it at some point before next season man.
further details , I'm putting a battery box and two storage containers , all aluminum on the trailer so all my gear rides on or in the trailer. I also have the battery connected to a victron lithium charger , and a three way heavy duty amperage switch. A harness goes all the way up to my battery in my bronco , similar to the trailer harness, and when I switch my switch on the trailer to one on position , it will charge the battery as I go down the road , on the other side , when I switch it to the on position , I will be able to cut on and off any LED lights on the trailer as well as use the winch. Then it has a off position for when I just want the circuit dead. All 100 percent waterproof.
Dang!!! This sounds crazy good.
Very interesting setup.
@@MDLRFishing the company I got doing it is using my designs , i'm not a welder but I have a engineers mind. I know what i'm after and how to get there. So shoot me ya email , I'll show ya in pictures what they have done so far , if you want to copy it.
@@MDLRFishing I got ya email from facebook , I'll send ya the pictures. If you want a detailed amazon list of parts and links to stuff I bought for it , let me know.
Get a Dremel tool and etch a line in those screws and use a flat head screwdriver to remove. Or drill em out.
Thanks for the tip 🤙
Think old town is the way to go …Hobie is just not the same anymore also think Old town is easier to purchase they are in more retail stores vs a hobie dealer
What you going with next year?😊
Something new 😉
Give to me 😂 I put another 4 yrs of fishing on it jaja
🤙😂 I bet you would 🙌
