- Hey guys Amanda here aka Rustc Duck Furniture! I had a blast with this super easy stain on paint on stain tutorial, to hopefully help you take your unfinished projects to the next level :). I built this very simple console as a piece to do this finish on - if you'd like a build tutorial for this then comment and let me know!!
Stain colours used
Rustoleum (Varathane) Dark Walnut
Minway Classic Grey
Minwax Provincial
ANY latex paint in an off white colour - ceiling paint is good as it is typically thinner than other paints but if you don't have that and wanted to use something you had left over or spare it would be best o thin it down to the ration 3 parts paint to 1 part water!
Special thanks goes to Sawtooth and Nail and team Rigid for the T shirt!
And another thanks to Sawdustandsmoke for the inspiration behind the DIY hardware.
Enjoy the video and if you have any questions that aren't answered in it, please ask in the comments section and i'll do my best to help!!

I love this tutorial. You use products that are actually accesible. Most people use super expensive product and tools that most people don't have. Thank you soooo much.
Best tutorial I’ve seen
Thank you so much for sharing! I have been searching for a couple days for an article or video to show me how to layer stain and I was about out of patience. Flawless method of instruction, in my opinion! Take care and keep up the good work!
I crack up every time I get to the wobbly table part! Too funny!! Such a beautiful piece! Thank you!
Awesome!
I’ve been looking into multi color finishes. You sold me on this finish for my living room furniture I’m about to start. The steel pipe and elbows is very appealing as well
Good tutorial, great finish, to the point and no waffling.
You do the most beautiful work thank you! thank you ! Absolutely love it
Looks great!
I love this. Thanks fir sharing !
You're welcome :)
Excellent demonstration
Love this look..
Looks great. Definitely trying this out soon.
Best wood staining technique ever!
Perfect!! Love the color 👌🏼
Just beautiful Amanda. Keep these great videos coming!
I love it ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
You're quite talented!
This is so cool! Just found you and love your work and helpful tips. Thank you!
THIS IS GORGEOUS!!!!!! I am doing this next!
Thank you for this awesome tutorial! I would like to try it on my headboard, yup :)
I love this finish! Great video.
Great! Thank you very much for sharing your vintage, rustic painting skills!!
Love it.
I really like the way you do things! I've been thinking about doing somethings to a couple of my own household items and your videos really help a lot!
Kyra I'm so glad you find them helpful :)
I inherited some nice pieces and want to redo a few I personally have to compliment eack other. I realize I have a ton of sanding to get to the wood, but I really am excited to get started now. Thanks!
Beautiful
LOVE THIS! 💃 Thanks for sharing.
A million thanks! I was really stuck with my bed project having no idea how to match up the boring pine bed frame with the colourful 7-species scrap wood headboard. This should work perfectly.
Love this finish! Going to use it on some wood in my travel trailer renovation!
Do you let the first two stain coats dry completely before applying the white latex?
so beautiful.
LOVE this!!!! You guys always have the best techniques! I don't understand how you can do all this without gloves on and not get anything all over your hands!!! I wear gloves and still find stain and paint on my forearms!!! LOL
Katie W lol thanks Katie I did get stain EVERYWHERE but I hate wearing gloves so hands are always a shade of brown stain at any given moment!!!
Great finish!
Beautifully done. FYI often galvanized pipe will not hold paint well without being etched. There is a pipe called simply “black pipe,” that has no galvanizing. After cleaning well, it takes black spray paint quite well. Again, nice job.
Good stuff Amanda! Looks like 50 yr old piece ..i like the idea of mixing the colors def. Gonna try it after i finish ul with this media console.. as for the small video..if u use ur cell make sure its in landacape mode ( meaning make sure it's horizontal & not vertical when shooting) and your video settings are 16:9 looks like it's for 4:3 could be wrong though..hope that helps and look fwd to seeing more vids from ya!🍻👍👍
Joe basement woodworking thanks Jo :) no it was filmed on a DSLR and then edited on my laptop with Windows movie maker 🤔
Very nice video I’ve done two or three rustic stain projects yours looks very nice. I haven’t used one video specifically. But various techniques from different videos. First time I’ve seen the paint applied with a wire brush. Gives a really nice effect. Also the production quality of your videos is pretty nice. Enjoyed watching them.
Did you wait for any of the stains to dry in between coats?
thanks, this was great
Great work. Job well done.
Beautiful!!!
Hi Amanda thanks so much for showing us your wonderful hard work, it is greatly appreciated and well received. I would love to see a video tutorial on how you built this beautiful piece. Also would we be able to get some plans for it please. You have inspired me and for that I truly thank you.
Gorgeous! I love this piece and technique
Great!
Can I do this to the top of an MDF dresser? It has absolutely zero grain appearance to it but it’s actually a gorgeous piece!
Edit: Nevermind! Lol! I’ve watched it now completely and I can’t wait to do this!
Can you use gel stain. Thank u for a great video and teaching us so much.
Please, what wood did you do this finish on?! I would like to try it on an unfinished parawood (rubberwood) furniture piece I have. I have never stained anything and your method is definitely more intricate, but results were just beautiful!
I am about to run to the store and grab stuff to do this to some plank flooring I just finished sanding and distressing. I'd bought a couple of colors of gel stain to mix but I love this technique SO SO much. I already have the dark walnut gel stain and both a slate gray and a briarsmoke gray. I'm wondering if gel stain would work for this technique? Have you ever tried it?
Absolutely gel stain would work - and yes I've tried it lots !!! Your idea sounds amazing!
I’m using this process with black and classic gray!!!
Give me mobile number
I'm back watching this again. I absolutely love this look. I am not sure if you are still monitoring this post but I was wondering if you watered down the latex paint any and how much brushing of the wire brush did you do? When you were first doing the paint it looked almost solid but the time elapse showed that it was more transparent so I wasn't sure if you thinned the paint and if the brushing made it more transparent.
Could you use steel wool?
Also can you use a thicker white wash?
I know this is an old video but can a black or even robin eggs blue latex be used to change the color profile a bit or would that completely ruin it?
Beautiful! Love the color!
Your videos are great! I love this piece and have started to redo our bedroom furniture. The first piece went well with the wire brush. The second piece, I had so many clumps when brushing, I had to sand after it dried to smooth it a bit and try again. Same issue. Do you have any suggestions? Am I putting too much force on the wire brush? It is pine furniture. Thank you in advance.
Amanda - I just found your video - thank you this is great. Can I ask why you use a latex paint? is there a difference to a norm acrylic? I have purchased feast & watson liming white (before I saw your video) could I use that instead or too transparent for this? Also, we have a dining table, not sure the timber, nothing fancy it has finger joint joins so there is no nice oak grain - think your ideas could work. A bit scary using the wire brush - does it make big grooves or just enough to enhance the white? thanks :)
coool!!
Nice. And I like the hardware idea. Can I use it?
Great instructions and nice outcome. I am currently sanding plywood planks to be used on a floor. I would like them to look old store like for finish. I am thinking to use this technique. Do you ever have pine knots to bleed with this procedure as done in video? I’d appreciate any other advice on success for my floors if you have time to give. THANKS ALOT!
Glad to hear this!! I came here looking for a two tone stain technique for my own plywood plank flooring. It took me two days to finish distressing and sanding the planks I cut from plywood and today I've been pulling my hair out trying to mix some stains. Finally came looking for some help on CZcams and found this exceptional video!! I'd be curious if you used this technique on your flooring. How did it turn out? What did you use for a finish sealing/protective coat for your flooring?
Nice video. Will acrylic crafting paint work? Thx
I was just wondering if your stains where water based or oil based
Did you add a polyurethane to this piece? If do what kind water or oil I just finished a staircase doing this and i am debating putting a finish on it because I don't want it to ruin the look. What do you recommend?
Would the Jacobean stain left for last be too dark? I'm thinking the provincial stain might make my red oak look darker.
Thanks!
Min wax special walnut classic grey
Did you use Poly on this or did you use an oil for the final coat? I was looking at oils to use but there didn't seem to be any that would work out well after having used latex paint. Thoughts?
Used the Varathane Diamond Poly on this!
What kind of wood is this?
I tried a similar style - stain over white wash - the stain is NOT drying. Does it matter that the paint is WATER based & the stain is OIL based????
Hope someone can HELP!!
Hi, what wood is this? Would love to do this on Pine
What type of latex paint do you use?
FROM BRAZIL: I am here, too! ...
Do you have plans for that desk?
Please may I get the build instructions. Thank you
♥️
😍
Can this be used on compressed wood? I'm in the US and no furniture is actual wood, its all compressed.
Stain doesnt work well with fake wood
Denisse Gorn oh pls, furniture here is to real wood! Stop shopping for $10 pieces of furniture and you’ll find real wood. For heavens sake, I hate when people (from the US at that!) try to make it seem like the US is nothing but airheads & cardboard. Get a grip. And yes I’m also in the US & your comment is not only ridiculous, but it’s also incredibly misleading & makes us ALL look bad for no damn reason! Jeez. Just Bc you’re cheap & don’t buy quality furniture doesn’t mean the ENTIRE country doesn’t have it available to them. 🤨 it most certainly exists, you just get what u pay for.
Quick question. Do you have to wait for the first coat of stain to dry before applying the white paint and wire brushing it?
Jody Johnson no you don't - this way you are blending them together :) hope this helps !
It really does. Thanks so much. Where are you located? I saw you wearing a Calgary Flames T-shirt in one of your videos and wondered if you are in Calgary?
Jody Johnson :) I'm about 2hrs north of Calgary and yes I'm a flames fan!!!
You never mention if stain is oil based or water based .
❤️🌹
Build it like a girl! Yes!!! This is a wonderful tutorial, anymore to come?
Why is the video so small?
Hey Nick not sure what you mean? Do you mean size wise or quality wise (I think you posed this question on the last one too!!!) Size wise on my laptop / cell and tablet they all seem OK to me 🤔 if its quality wise then that may have something to do with my limited software!! If you have any advice iit would be greatly appreciated!
Ooohni think I see what you mean - the photos are full screen but the video part has the black lines down the side 🤔🤔🤔 I seriously have no idea why that is - something to look into for next time!!
Rustic Duck Furniture Not a criticism of the content but I think your output is set at 4:3 rather than 16:9 or quality is to low 720p or 1080p
I've heard good feedback about the Stodoys plans.
Stodoys plans has very good and accurate plans.
Fantastic finish! I have a barn door someone would like me to make for them. I'd really like to know how you made the weathered looking boards that are behind the table while you're working on this project?
I subscribed and look forward to learning more from you. Thank you.
