Those beams up in the attic, I have watched great-grandmom as a child dry the traditional clothing and socks. It is so original, what a stroke of luck no previous owners spoiled it! And all the little properties along it, your own place when your kids are there, are just lovely. Friends to come over. It sounds good, Benita. Especially as you talk about restoring. You won't live there permanently, so all will be doable. I lived in a 400-year-old home, always something to do, and I know you love that. It was so much better build than my current 75 -year-old house.
Yes, we’re going to let things take time and not rush it!
The original details in Benita's new house are fascinating! (I loved, for example, the floral paper in the back of the pantry, and the cool kitchen cabinetry. We had 2 pull-out bins in our 1940s kitchen when I was growing up, but we were told they were for flour and sugar, not firewood. Not sure that was correct as that would've been a LOT of sugar, particularly! LOL) And I find it fun to return to older ways of living from time to time. It's refreshing, somehow.
@@denverdubois5835 Flour, yes, it was for flour. Sugar was indeed not in a cupboard, mice and other pests could get in too quickly. And way too expensive. The flour was used in large quantities, as the bread was homemade and baked, and other food was prepared. Bread was used with all meals. The flour came from different sources, so different pull-out cupboards. Modern life can be a curse and a blessing. The speed is too high, but the fact girls can go to schooling, not married off at 13, etc., is a blessing.

Oh, Benita, I LOVE your new house! It's so old and beautiful. Your distinction between "restoration" vs. "renovation" makes me very happy. It breaks my heart to see all the character and history stripped out of the old houses I adore. Can't wait to see the projects you'll undertake here! Huge congratulations, and I wish you lots of luck! Oh...I come from California, where timber or wood frame homes are standard for various reasons (including earthquakes, obviously) so it's funny to realize that they can be a novelty to people in Europe. The smell of old wood in a nineteenth century house is one of the best smells I've ever experienced. Here they were often made out of redwood--just the thought of how vintage redwood lumber looks and smells makes me smile. Cheers!
It’s not a novelty over here, most houses are timber framed in Sweden but I’ve not personally lived in a house with a log construction before😊

Love, love, love the stuga! It looks quite similar toour home, including being a combination of two different timber buildings. Our home has more mod cons, but sadly a lot of original details has been lost to «renovation» in the 90s. We’re looking to put some character back. So I’m looking forward to following along with your projects! Best luck and well wishes going forward!

WOW, When I tell you my jaw dropped at this houses/houses. We has an amazing holiday in Styrsö last year and there were lots of houses like these on the island and I fell in love with them. I can see that there will be lots of work in your future ( to get them how you want them ) but also the most amazing sunmers for you, your son and his fiance and all your friends. Swedish countryside is very special. Congrats on your purchase and I'm super excited to see how things develope.

I'm a Texan whose state was in its infancy when your house(s) were likely new. The materials, the exposed age of the rustic right side structure, the new-yet-vintage details like the post-war ceiling light you lingered to view - they're all amazing!
I’m looking forward to watching you work on this summer home! Restoring sounds perfect. There are so many shows out where people go in and completely gut everything and put in new, but I like seeing someone go in and just make something nice out of what they have to work with. This is going to be far more exciting to me than any of those!

The room with the logs would make a great guest room... give the a real treat to stay in a historic part of the home... and since it is a guest room and only used occasioally having it be a bit rustic would not be inconvenient, but fun for the guest. I love that you say you want to restore and keep the original home as much as possible.
There will definitively be beds in there but might be some sort of craft room/workspace too!

The wooden panelled room would be lovely with a stove in it and to be used as a sitting room and magical at Christmas time as it feels so cosy. How wonderful is that room?

It’s pretty stunning! As for my mom, she passed away in November. She was very ready to go so it was a relief for her and me to be honest.

When you were sitting at the table I could all but see the wheels turning in your head with ideas for restoring the house. I'm here for it all.

Early in our marriage, my husband and I owned a house that we never found out the history of, but was obviously not built originally as a home. The exterior walls were 15" thick brick walls. It had been nicely restored, so we didn't have to do anything to add mod cons. But we decided to tear out a downstairs closet and found to our amazement that it was built using square nails. A sign that the building was very old. Congratulations on your purchase. It has a lot of potential. And I love the red and white colors. Very beautiful.

Your house is going to be charming! Judging from the poles across the ceiling in the log cabin room, it looks like someone was using it to dry and maybe store lots of stuff - maybe herbs, vegetables, meats.....

I read the headline and had the biggest smile on my face. What a perfect summer home! We had a cottage in our family for more than 70 years but it was time to sell. I have the most wonderful memories of time spent there. This place is just perfect and that kitchen is awesome. Enjoy❤

What an absolute gem! You are a girl after my own heart. It's so hard to find houses that are still intact and not remuddled. My thinking exactly. What great features. I wish I could give you a hand. windows are my specialty. We've lived in a 1915, a 1930 and a 1790's. Currently renting in a small 1750's while we look for something, hopefully early 20th century. My landlady is happy to have me do any repairs. I'd be bored stiff without a project. Best of luck to you all; that house is in great hands.

Never did I think that the Benita life story would ever be this exciting... You have taken us from one flat to another and now this .. wind is knocked from my sails at the amount of work to be done here ... but ... you have made all work on homes look so easy .. and now we all are a part of this very very exciting adventure .. I love it. I think you are quite right in renovating rather than stripping everything out and taking away the character that caught your imagination in the first place. As long as it is wind and water tight you can do any work over a period of time. Kitchen cabinets look in good condition and as they are made of wood can be stripped and repainted easily. Floor boards look in a pretty good condition as well. Only modernisation I would want might be solar panels or wind turbine if possible.
Hope you will all be very happy there and keep us up to date with renovations.

please only use oil paint when restoring the windows, the acrylic starts to peel on top of the paint colors, e.g. allbäck is good
