- Virtual sniping comes in such a spectrum of flavours, from Call of Duty quickscopes, and Counter-Strike: Global Offensive AWP picks, to measuring your range and bullet drop in games like ARMA 3 and Sniper Elite 5. But games don’t always get the humble sniper rifle quite right. With the help of Jonathan Ferguson, Keeper of Firearms & Artillery at the Royal Armouries Museum in the UK, we break down the differences between the virtual sniper rifle and its real counterparts.

Hi, friends!
Thanks so much for watching the first episode of this new season.
We've been working hard these past few months to create some really cool episodes and explore some interesting ideas, exciting stuff is coming for the rest of the series.
The support and engagement you've shown on the previous series is massively appreciated, and hope that this new one delivers more of the content you enjoy.
I'm keen to hear what you think, and what you'd like to see more episodes on, so please let your thoughts be heard either here or hit me up on Twitter.
But once again a big thank you from the Loadout team of myself, the massive talent behind the camera of Chris Morris and Adam Mason, as well of course your friend and mine Jonathan Ferguson and the fine folks at the Royal Armouries.
Can't wait to share more soon!
Dave
Deja vu or have I seen this before?
@@CAARaeed Maybe you've been so excited you've watched it twice already.
But this is the 4th season of the show, so there are plenty of our other episodes you may have watched!
👏👏👏
Can you do an episode on machine guns, pardon my ignorance, I'm not sure if you have already.
Love to see one on bullets as well like how games could make realistic bullet travel and damage but still could be a fun shooter. I feel the only few games that do that right, are insurgency sandstorm and squad. Even my favorite game siege doesn't do bullet damage or travel correctly.
Love you guys' videos. Keep up the good work!

great episode
A barret is 100% a accurate rifle at long distance tho he is wrong. Mabye not a bolt action 338. Lapua but it's going to be as accurate as the shooter can be.
@@christianterrill3503 Yes, the Barret is an accurate rifle at a 1000 yards - if your target is a vehicle, which it was designed for.
@@christianterrill3503 on a small target you can definitely notice the difference between a barret and a McMillan, for example. So I definitely wouldn't say it'll be 'as accurate as your shooter' at distances >1000 yards.

@@MetalGamer666 If you think Tarkov went too far, I dare you to try understanding things like shot groupings, shotgun chokes, bullet weights, MOA, and all that other fun ballistics stuff in real life.
Yea, like CODs FMJ perk. FMJ? As opposed to what, exactly? Am I supposed to assume everyone is running around with OTMs or soft points? 🤣
@@McCaroni_Sup Don't forget powders wither; extruded, pellet, flake, duplex loading, the dangers of over pressurization from too little powder, "hot" loads that are so many grains over optimal, even bullet diameter can change based upon manufacturing of the barrel. For example, I slugged by 6.5 Grendel and found I need 6.58mm rounds for a proper land and groove fit.
I love Jonathan, while he still offers his professional opinions on the weapons and their realism, he actually understands that video games are games and are supposed to be fun. :)
I loved the railgun comment, loved camping with it in Quake! :3 Remember writing custom binds to zoom in for right mouse button lol.
I remember a lot of games being hitscan and when my brother got Battlefield Bad Company 2 and saw bullet drop and that it was a projectile that you needed to lead targets we found it awesome they addeda bit of realism
One of my favourite gaming memories was playing BF1943 (the online-only cut down version you could only get digitally on consoles) with my little brother when I came home from uni for Christmas, we set our PS3s up in the same room so we could play online together.
He was on the deck of a carrier waiting for a plane to spawn while I'd been dogfighting an enemy player, we both bailed and ended up swimming a long way to shore really close together. It was well beyond the draw distance so my bro could see the 3D marker but not the enemy and I could see the trails of his missed shots, so I told him where to aim and after using almost all his ammo, he finally managed to land a headshot on the guy. So much fun... It did admittedly take us both out of PTO'ing for a couple of minutes though.
@@n_tas what a lovely story! BF1943 was a really fun game, many fun ideas; like the bomber mini game etc.. but the best thing, it captured the chaos and satisfaction of Battlefield, while being quite historically accurate. God knows how many hours I had in that game lol
You're murican, right?
Delta Force from the late 90's was my first game that had that.
@@Brunnen_Gee yup, i forgot that game at the moment of the comment. Actually that was the first game me and my brother experienced that, juat it was so long I confused memories.
Halo does pretty well framing the power of their 14.5x114mm precision rifle. A few rounds will disable most vehicles and punch through the sci-fi and alien armour.
A body shot will overload an energy shield and head shot will just straight up break a neck through shielding. Unshielded or lightly armoured targets will be flattened on impact.
Halo's worldbuilding is spot on. That said, sniping destroying vehicles was only added in Reach.
Ok fanboy, very educational!
@@pray2313 I don't thank you for your input!
14.5x114mm, isnt that from of one of those old anti tank rifles? A russian one i think, they also used it for the KPV which is pretty much the largest caliber HMG
And it doesn't send a bullet flying in a random direction far away from your actual target when you aren't scoped in.
It's quite interesting that in real life, those ranges and battles presented, even in BF, won't be as common for "snipers" or even tanks to be honest, the closest thing to a sniper in that situation would be a "marksman" with a semi-auto, and the closest thing to a tank would be a IFV, but that definitely won't be as fun.
My problem with snipers in games.
They make 300 meters seem far...
It really isn't I can shoot a baseball size target at 300 meters standing.
With a mosin nagant I can hit a man size target at 900 meters. With very little elevation hold overs.
1000 meters its pushing the limits of most ww2 rifles.
But games act like a .338 lapua rifle will struggle at 500 meters.
I have a .338 lapua and hit a 24x24 inch plate at 1600 meters with only a 3 mil hold over. I'm pretty sure I could hit 2000 meters if I could find a range that far.
@@Robert53area ye sure
@@Robert53area every weapon in a game has that problem. Look at the damage falloff of a submachine gun or assault rifle, let alone the notoriously hindered shotgun.
@@stevenbobbybills yeah, the shotgun thing is silly AF. A good choke and the right ammo can easily still be an effective pattern at 100 meters/yards.
Though PCC/SMG type weapons do generally have significantly more drop than many rifles due to the large/heavy bullets moving relatively slowly. It's not so bad with zippy rounds like .357 sig or 7.62tok, but with .45 or even 9mm it can be rather extreme.
Those last 2 only drop a few inches at 50 yards. But the 9mm falls at least 8" low at 100meter/yards, usually closer to 12", or a foot of drop. The .45acp has around 15" of drop at 100 meters/yards.
@@Robert53area I forget when and where it was published-it might have even been during the conflict so I'm not sure if I could find it-but there was a paper on engagements in the War on Terror and the average engagement at that time was about 600 meters. The only game I've seen get this right is the ARMA series, but then again it was developed during that time as well with that in mind.
There also is an issue with asset scaling and distance in games in a development standpoint. Same games really do measure the distance completely wrong, or scale items larger or smaller to give the impression of further distance. I recall even commenting on that on a few titles, warthunder to name a specific one that immediately comes to mind for how egregious it was: Air only maps intentionally scale the landscape smaller to make it feel as if you're much higher than you actually are. Full size houses are smaller than a F2A Buffalo, which is ridiculous.
Surprised it wasn't mentioned that the arbitrary damage difference that can sometimes just make snipers into better shotguns. Because if everything hit as hard as it should, that wouldn't really work out
Exactly. The AWP abuse in every version of Counter-Strike wouldn't be a thing if every weapon was as deadly as it should.
@@marianoclerici3986 wdym
@@Maxawa0851 IRL, 1 AR round would put someone down if it hit anywhere in the upper torso or head. Or, as was tested by (I think) garand thumb, spamming buck shot from shotguns at 100 yards would become the meta.

The Barrett M107 (depicted in game) is 3MOA with machine gun ammunition. However, Barrett claims it is capable of 1MOA with match grade ammunition.
Having used that match grade ammo in the M107, no it’s at best a 2moa gun, the M8API is more 3.5moa. That’s what happens when the barrel is held in place with springs…..
@@ShawnHinck lol gotta love manufacturer’s claims versus reality. I’ve only ever fired standard Ball ammo through it and held 3MOA or below out to 2000yds and still capable of 1st round impacts past the max effective on vehicle sized targets. For me, the games depiction of taking the targets arm off regardless of shot placement seemed decently realistic for the weapon’s system’s inherent inaccuracy.
@@ShawnHinck This is why the most accurate rifle that was ever built (the first installment of the Gepard) was so much optimized for accuracy that it minimized the number of moving parts so much that it only held one bullet and it was extremely cumbersome to reload. Later variants toned that down and made it more practical, ending up with a similar design as the Barrett.
No you just cant shoot. Deal with your recoil anticipation before spewing off arbitrary moa claims

I found that scope glint gives sniping with iron sights a useful edge in battlefield 1
Iron sight snipers were awesome in BF3, as well.
I'd be flipping ecstatic if someone snipes me from 1 kilometer away with only iron sights.
Just use any scope that doesn’t have the glint, they usually tell you if they got one
I think insurgency sandstorm does it well, with good scopes being as costly as the guns, and basically making you unable to see anything small outside of the scope
Definitely sniped with irons or marksman scope to bypass glint in BF1. 👍🏻
Jonathan is the teacher I really love
I think the only weapon where lack of realism actually hurts gameplay is flamethrowers. Being able to spew burning, sticky death and deny enemies access to an area for a moment would be really cool, and causing damage over time that usually can't be stopped until it kills you would probably create cool moments of counter-play where your victims scramble to do some damage in their last moments. Sure, most weapons aren't accurately portrayed, but I think basically every other mainstay weapon is at least well-designed to be fun.
The biggest difference is range too. Military flamethrowers have a range of 45 yards or more, in games this usually translates to barely 5-10 feet in front of you and in a semi-wide "cone" instead of a line of liquid.
Darktide is quite good with the area denial part
Deep Rock Galactics flamethrower is pretty good.
Battlefield 5(1942) has flame throwers

Barrett: for when you don't care about accuracy as long as you can hit the broad side of the barn, and take out the broad side of the barn.
I'm also a big fan of sniping in games. Arma is the top dog in that spectrum for me, using ACE mod to factor in windage and proper scope turret adjustment.
Some of my favourite gaming memories are sat on a hill providing overwatch for my group.
Get "DZN Rifle Tripod" mod too if you don't have it. It will allow you to level your bipod (in addition to making a tripod available), which makes for much more accurate/practical mil-dot ranging. 😉
This is such a well-written and engaging video, I’m loving this series!
The boom of a barrett 50 cal Irl is impressive as well. You feel it more standing behind the shooter than being the shooter. Physics is weird.
It's all in the muzzle brake.
The Royal Armouries in Leeds is amazing visit it. They have Roman swords from 2,000 years ago with peoples names carved in em. Mind blowing
Excellent video! Very fine blend of history in games and information from the real world counterparts.
"sniping" in bad company was a remington slug with acog. still the best memories
When you watch too much Jonathan Ferguson you memorise the entire GameSpot introduction of him.
Hats off to the people balancing the game mechanics to keep things fun and fair without feeling too artificial.
6:07 I remember seeing many arguments back in the day about this, mainly between "Battlefield's bullet drop is a bad mechanic" and "Battlefield's bullet drop is a good mechanic" camps but with occasional bouts of "Battlefield's bullet drop is ridiculously exaggerated" thrown in
Really hoping we will get an episode on rails, who tried what and how we arrived at the Picatinny standard.
Ooh, good idea! Niche, but I like it.
The picatinny is pretty well documented. It was developed at the Picatinny arsenal in the early 90s, and is basically a standardized version of the earlier Weaver rail.
I love these videos. Thanks Dave!
At the siege of Orlens 1434? (Jeanne d'Arc, 100 years war), the 2 english commanding officers where killed by head shots, fired from the walls by gunners (handguns).
Also 2 english heroes at the samme siege where dispatched by precision shooting from fire arms (handguns), during the last part of the siege.

@@acceptablecasualty5319 are there, though? The only thing that matters are plate carriers. Which don't even cover your torso. Really impressed with the production values on these videos. Informative and interesting even as a non gamer.
great to see some real peoples behind this virtual reality creations.
For me allure of sniping is the strategy behind getting the mission done w/o anyone even suspecting you were there. Not only taking enemies from huge distance no matter how satisfying that is, but interacting with the environment as well. Getting to a spot that fits your camo perfectly. Choosing the order in which to take the enemies out so they don't trigger an alarm. It's basically like advanced hunting and there is some primal satisfaction from that. Not just go in guns blazing, spray'n'pray style, it's the strategy.
That's what I enjoy also
I wonder what Jonathan finds heavier….carrying that Baratt or this channel.
This was fascinating, thanks for sharing this! God bless you :)
Can't wait for more videos!
Could you do a video on the Max Payne series?
This video has reminded me that I need to get back out and sight in my 308 again if I even can after that scope first fall off the bench. I had just gotten the scope, got the big boy all sighted in and the bipod was a bit too loose so she took a tumble.
In arma I sat for 5-6 minutes just calculating the the state my gun should be and using maps and tools then wait 20-30 min for hvt target and killing it in 2 shots thanks to the spotter and then running away miles with those heavy guns and ammo to the evac , that is satisfaction at its peak
This video is spot on!
This series is great
Ah, the call out to Battlefield 1942, I have sent many many maaany hours on that game, back in the day :D Though my playstyle was the complete opposite of a sniper, jumping into a jeep and running over as many enemy combatants as possible :D Sounds quaint, but it really was quite revolutionary at the time!
It was always fun, in the early days of America's Army, when the run and gun kids from COD would visit. They usually voiced their frustration rapidly that reticles moved, quick scoping didn't work, and they couldn't sprint down every road without being picked off.
Unfortunately, due to superfluous whining, the realism was dialed back to draw the kids.
Damn, I really miss this series.
I recall reading books on the American civil war in elementary school and snipers being used then.
I could be wrong tho.
Sweet video mate !
Both the British and Americans had small numbers of snipers in the American revolution.
But yes the Confederates especially made use of snipers in the civil war. Most Famously killing a union general moments after telling his artillery crews not to be afraid, they couldn’t hit an elephant at that distance
Happy to see more loadout!
Happy to provide!
Now, Silent Scope is something I REALLY miss in my life. I would pay good money to play that arcade again.
Weak Point: HEAD
I wish the dogfighting realm of Arial combat had games that tried for the same realism. Being a side-gunner in something like a WW2 bomber was crazy hard. I want more of that challenge.
Used to happen. before the internet compuserve genie etc had realistic online fighter sims. Thing is wo radar etc etc etc those arent really much fun because you dodnt see the speck that is now a plane firing from 500 yards abd then becomes a spec again

New comer to the series but I'm enjoying it. Would love to see an episode on rail guns, gauss guns or magnetic induction weapons.
Scope Glint for me causes PTSD everytime I see it. It's like a eye of death staring me down everytime I peek in Destiny.
Yeah it's a shame they didn't show any clips from Destiny, as someone who hasn't played many other shooters I was surprised how small and subtle the lens glare was. In Destiny hardscoping puts you into a Sauron cosplay
The "glint" is more than some gameplay element. It's been a real issue in big conflicts like WW2.
@Night Rider im guessing youve never fired a rifle. At 300 yards you Might hit someone if youre a good shot and hes standing still
One thing that never made sense to me is bullet spread from the hip with snipers in games like iv hip fired a m24 and still hit my target at 300yards it shoots where you point recoil is easier at the hip as well in hand held vs pod and stocked
Fr das what I came here for
The extreme bullet drop they have in games suggests they're typically shooting subsonic bullets yet they're usually full power rifles without suppressors. I suppose this relates to the idea in games that "suppressors mean enemies don't react to gunshots under any circumstance", a suppressed 9mm is still going to be as loud as using a steel hammer to pound a steel nail into a wooden board.
Random thought: I just realized that one can use the coriolius effect to easily disprove flat earthers.
People have tried, hasn't worked
You can't use reason to convince the irrational.
@@ErwinPommel one can on an individual level, given time, but on a group level I agree with you.
Quickscoping or 360° No scoping better be on the list of things that games get wrong.
the problem with that is games don't account for weight...
like to see a gamer do a real slide/bunny hop while wearing 60+lbs of gear and quickscope with a 20+lb rifle...
@wildbill6976 They won't be able to. After all shooters need to have the action movie physics to make it sell
there is no other filing like measuring windage ,distance ,humidity ,air pressure setting up your optics and landing one perfect shot in arma 3
ah mani gotta go play again. I was more into its predecessor...the russian(i think) one that was hyperrealistic. No running around jumpspraying or your dead. You pull the trigger your concern becomes avoiding being shot
One of my fondest memories was becoming a sharpshooter with the cowboy repeated in New Vegas, because it had no scope.
Ngl the Enfield is absolutely bussin my guy
In reality I would never want a game to be 100% realistic. By that point I'd rather just go to the range with one of my own rifles.
Everyone knows the best representation of realistic snipers is in FPS chess smh.
Great video, great host 😁
Barrett M98B so legendary XD
the SRR-61 of battlefield 4
The new mw22 campaign had such a good sniping mission, with price as your spotter. Gotta replay it.
I really like the anti material rifle the added in the new battlefield, the ntw50. For me, it's the first time in a casual fps that it feels like that type of weapon was properly implemented.
He's spot on about the appeal. I'm a very aggressive player normally. But there's just something nice and appealing about sniping over long distances. Taking my time, planning my shots, leading targets etc. The new Warzone 2's DMZ mode is just fantastic for this. HUGE map, tons of AI, with the player threat that you can hunt. Having a great time sniping there, while doing my crazy CQB in normal multiplayer. Best of both worlds.
There's nothing quite as satisfying as sniping away at a whole camp of enemies in a singleplayer game, and then just walking in the front door with nothing but bodies in your way.
I wish they would dumb down or make the AI deal less DMG, a "glitch", not really sure what to call it, I saw an AI shoot the Lockwood shotgun three time before reloading a few times. I like Sniping in the DMZ, but I wish they would impellent a kind of lighting physics. so having the sun behind your body, you get no scope glint vs the sun in front. they have shadows that mimic what you are doing in the game, should be easy I think to do that, and if you are in a building and are standing the middle of the room no glint vs having the barrel sticking out the window. like if that just to hard just make the .50cal snipers they do have just drop players and AI like they really would, one or the other would work for me, I would not get as mad as I do having to 2 tap players with a 50 if they changed the physics on scope glint.
@gamespot I am not sure what is going on with you lately,. but your content is really quite good lately. I hadn't really checked you out in quite some time. The tone, editing, content, ect has matured nicely.
For me the first FPS to really capture sniping was MAG on PlayStation. Prior to that games like COD4 took place on relatively close quarter battlefields where the semi-auto nature of the Dragunov or M21 made them the top choice. MAG was the first game to have player counts up in 60+ all the way out to 256 on a map, and had maps big enough to accommodate such numbers. It got slept on because such large maps meant lower graphics and such stages were challenging to populate, but they were the first multiplayer maps I played on at least that had the range of an Intervention or .338 Lapua become a real consideration.
In BF3 bullet drop is also calculated relative to which scope you equipped *flies away*
Remember In CoD WaW when you take the scope off the bold action the gun would be considerably worse for some reason.
Or like in cod 4 when you added an acog to the m4oa it would give it more damage
7:00 - One of the earliest games (that I know of) which introduced scope glint was the original Far Cry's multiplayer, I don't think it was present in singleplayer
Little late here, but Y'all should take a look at submachine guns in games! Not least important of which: HK MP7 & MP5 plus the P90!
One doesn't breath in and hold their breath when aiming, one is supposed to exhale and then shoot. Idk why games get that part wrong too.
There are a few ways of doing it, neither is exactly wrong. The point is to still your bodies natural movements from breathing for example so we can take an as precise shot as possible. And the most common variant trained in militaries around the world, and probably recreational shooters and hunters as well, is breath in, hold, fire. Also, lungs full of air gives you a couple more seconds before microtwitches set in should you need them 🤷🏻♂️
Additionally, it's a slightly easier to deal with the recoil kick at your shoulder, if you can exhale.
You can do both. Whichever provides you the most stability and is more comfortable for you.
Tried it, doesn't work for me. I am more accurate holding my breath.
Breathing out lowers your pulse so generally it's better to breath out than to hold your breath but whatever works for you.
I love this series.
Its always a walk down videogame memory lane.
Its crazy how there was the brief era of gaming where everything was brown. 😂
00:10 Medal of Honor, the very first game for PS1... I remember that one! Good times!
Always have to test how snipers work in different games. Bullet drop, fps, accuracy, etc
This is a great point, its a good implementation some times in video games but in reality where snipers are often under cover this seems like lunacy, no sane person would make themselves easier to shoot at and I never gave this much thought till now
Loved the KAR98, deadly as heck!
I’d love an episode on SMGs!
I’ll tell you about SMGs, they’re useless past 75 yards unless you’re shootings a round like the 5.7x28. Other than that I’d take an SBR over an SMG every day of the week.
snipers are just overpowered. the games make them have literally no bullet drop off, which is kinda unrealistic, but remember, it's all just a game :)
Yo. This is an interesting subject.
You guys should make newer Videos in 4K someday.
Yah, I think the misconception of the Barrett M82 is probably the most prevalent one.
Not mentioned too well...
Silencers and subsonic ammunition IRL vs video games. I used to think in Rainbow Six (oh yeah, old school gamer) Rogue Spear that it was BS that I had to lose 20-20% power for using a silencer.
Now I'm an older adult and own several cans in various calibers (diameters actually...some cans are rated better than others) and it's amazing how weak a suppressed SBR will be at distance. You might make the shot and hot the paper or steel, but it's amazing what you lose in muzzle velocity. Small dings on steel vs normal pitting with a full-power supersonic load.
For that, I say some video games get it right.
Arrows in Skyrim, seeing some of the hit locations is satisfying.
I don't think the knowledge that a Barrette is an anti-materiel rifle is all that comforting when that round goes through your body, making it into a mush from a distance.
Barret was meant for vehicles and equipment they are not designed for anti personal
@@roxle9905 Doesn't stop it from being very good at doing just that. When they say that it's not accurate they mean not accurate like a mosin nagant. You'll still hit someone in the head from 1000m.
@@ruukinen you can't hit anything with Mosinka over 200m and even that was Simo Hayha using a Finnish super upgraded model. Current day russian mobiks with stock Mosins are cannon fodder. The range of that rifle is less what any AK or Fal or M16 variant has, let alone if you upgrade them with thermal optics.
@@KasumiRINA I don't think you know what you are talking about. Mosins are fairly popular as guns for shooting competitions where you are only allowed to use ww2 gear. Those competitions are for 300m targets, at least here in Finland. It might not be a top performer but you have to be an absolute beast of a marksman for the gun to be the difference maker.
The kind of inaccuracy you are talking about is flintlock level. There's hundreds of years of advancement in weapon technology between that and a Mosin.
Johnathan Ferguson my beloved
I still have warm dreams about the NO LAND BEYOND from Destiny.
Kinda wish they would implement a mesh scope into games tho. Like, the glint of your scope is covered but the visual is slightly obscured and it takes longer to scope in
thats one of the purposes of that long black tube past the lens
How about an episode on gun mechanics implemented in futuristic games that have no reason still existing in the future, such as pump action, revolvers, or bolt action.
Pump action may still have a place for shells with very low power, like bean bag rounds
I’d like to see an episode on improvised arms in games from the famous Molotov to inexplicably being able to craft a machine gun with an empty soup can and some duct tape.
The old filter suppressor was pretty fun in bf/cod campaign mode
Makes me think of a year back... we had centers doing molotovs and recipes of making them posted everywhere... was it just a year ago? Feels like a decade. I wonder what happened with those stashes of improvised firebombs that only really seen use in Kherson (which was retaken with IFVs and artillery anyway).
The balancing between semi auto and bolt action rifles is such a big thing as well. Even to non-scoped rifles realistic leaning games always have trouble with the pacific theatre in WW2. The M1 garand is always nerfed for damage or given insane kick to try and balance the fact that it is firing full calibre rifle rounds in semi automatic vs everyone else running bolt action rifles

Man, makes me wanna play MGS5 Phantom Pain again. Wish they'd come out with another game like that, but with modern graphics, and actually finish it properly this time.
