I translated using google translate, (and I changed some parts) is very accurate but I think each language has a beauty so when a song is translated is so different. But I hope it helps you to understand it. Jose Jose was an idol in Mexico, lovely man.
JOSE JOSE EL TRISTE (the sad man)
How sad it was to say goodbye
When we loved each other more
      Until the swallow emigrated
      Heralding the end
How sad everything looks without you
The seas of the beaches leave
The colors of gray are dyed
      Today everything is loneliness
I don't know if I'll see you again later
I don't know what my life will be
Without the blue star of your being
      That doesn't light me anymore
Today I want to taste my pain
I don't ask for compassion or mercy
The story of this love was written
      For eternity
How sad everyone says that I am
      I'm always talking about you
You don't know what thinking of your love, your love
I have been able to help myself
I have been able to help myself
      Oh oh oh oh
      Oh oh oh oh
Today I want to taste my pain
I don't ask for compassion or mercy
The story of this love was written
      For eternity
How sad everyone says that I am
      I'm always talking about you
You don't know what thinking of your love, your love
I have been able to help myself to live
I have been able to help myself to live
I have been able to help myself to live

Can you believe that this was actually his first time singing in front of a crowd? This was a yearly songwriting competition similar to Eurovision song contest that used to be held up until the late 80s. Each year there was a theme, and songwriters from all over Latin America would send in their compositions and select any singer they wanted to interpret it in front of the judges and audience. Can you believe he came in third place due to a technicality? His song did not adhere to the theme of that year's contest.
P.s. All of the people in the audience looking dumbfounded and in awe of his performance, they were all well established singers and performers in the Latin American music industry, all amazed by the vocal prowess of this kid from Mexico City that no one had even heard of before. The only reason they cheered for him in the beginning was because he was representing Mexico in the contest. By the end, they were cheering for him only.

A few background facts: Jose's father was a tenor opera singer, but Jose himself had no professional training of any kind. Yet, emotionally, he connected with every song, stemming from his complicated relationship with his parents, and the fact that Jose was very shy and struggles being such a public figure, which, in turn, made us all connect with our own emotions in a very raw way. I recommend you listen to "la nave del olvido" and get an translation of those lyrics so you can enjoy fully appreciate that song.

They say it's bad luck to win first place. Most of those artist never go on to make it. Third place is supposed to be the best spot you can get. Shakira, not saying she has anywhere near as good a voice as Jose Jose, won third place in a competition and look at her now.

So what I know about this performance is that he was a contestant and was the most applauded one but he didn't win, he got second but this performance was what made him known as an artist and after that he had a peak in his career as a singer and became one of the most famous artists in Mexico (along with Juan Gabriel whose "hasta que te conocí" performance is a MUST watch and would be highly appreciated if you react to it). Unfortunately José José's voice got damaged due to alcohol (lots of it) and his lasts years as a singer wasn't even the tiniest bit of his early years, he died this year but he let a great legacy behind. Thank you so much for your reaction video, it was amazing and I felt so happy every time I saw you get excited about his singing, that's why many of us Mexicans are so proud of him. Thank you so much Sam ❤️ and please do consider reacting to Juan Gabriel please.

how sad was to say goodbye
when we loved eachother the most
    even the birds went away
    foreshadowing the end
how sad everything looks without you
the seas retreat from the beaches
    all colors turn gray
    today everything its loneliness
i dont know if im ever gonna see you again
i dont know what will be of my life
without the blue star of your beign
that no longer shines upon me
today i want to taste my pain
im not asking for compassion or mercy
the story of this love was written
    for the eternity
how sad everybody says i am
that im always talking about you
they dont know that thinking about your love
    your love
i've been able to help myself to live

Well in Spanish there are only 5 vowels, so they boundaries are wider,. A close or round o, or an open o don´t affect the meaning of the word. It changes a bit by geography, but a wider number of speakers prefer a middle point. People from Caribbean and coastal cities are notorious for using wide open vowels.

    Some facts about this video:
    - This was a Latin America singing contest (USA, Spain and Portugal were later invited) , which José José ended up at 3rd (still unexplained) where Brazil and Venezuela won 1st and 2nd place respectively.
    - Because of his 3rd. place was named "El Príncipe de la canción" / "The Prince of the song" (sorry Prince fans), also his coat looks like a main character from a book named "El Principito" / "Little Prince", José José accepted this name releasing a song called "Príncipe" seven years later.
    - Mentioned coat was a last-minute borrow
    - Even with a couple non-successful released albums, he wasn't famous until this presentation.
