    UPDATE!!! I tried the Kamui Brown Soft, DID NOT LIKE IT. I now have a Zan Premium Soft and it's definitely better.
    FINALLY!!! I got motivated to finish this video I have been hanging on to for a long time. I would like to thank all of my subscribers for your patience. For the new viewers, welcome and I hope you enjoy this video.
    This is the Predator Revo shaft, a 12.4 radial Revo in fact. Man, I have such a love-hate relationship with this shaft. I know this is an expensive investment and a lot of you are not in the market to buy a $500 shaft but I wanted to see what all the hype there is around the carbon fiber shaft market and why not start with the most popular one.
    Below is a link to the Dr. Dave video I talked about in the video where he goes into more of the analytical science comparison of Low Deflection shafts.

      @@jeanstarkey9524 Sorry I haven't put anything up in a while. Between work, family life, and good old procrastination I haven't been keeping up with things. Anyways, I am currently working on a video but it's not a shaft video. I will have probably 3 to 4 videos after the one I am working on which will be on carbon fiber shafts. Since you’re about ready to pull the trigger though I will say this, I have tried the Revo 12.4, the Cyngery 15K, BeCue Prime M 12mm, and used a friends Jacoby Black. Out of all those, I would recommend the Cynergy. I feel it's the best all-around shaft. Don't get me wrong though, the Revo is nice and I like the Prime M's small diameter tip but I keep finding myself going back to the Cynergy. I am still playing around with all 3 and trying different tips to see if it improves things. I will finish with this piece of advice, a carbon fiber shaft is a great LD shaft option but is really expensive and don't expect this to be a miracle piece of equipment that fixes everything. You will have to practice and get used to it to see improvement and at the end of the day some people end up not liking the characteristics of an LD shaft. As for me, I like them and I do think it helps me with the way I play. Good Luck and let me know how it goes!

    Thank you so much for the video, there was so much insight. Personally I went from the 314 with a med tip, to the same shaft going to a medium clear super soft Kamui. Then I tried out both the 12.9 and 12.4mm REVO’s with the standard tips, I personally enjoyed and adjusted to the 12.9 faster and better and prefer it over the 12.4, if you would like to try those two in comparison.

    I just saw your review of the revo. It is very well done. I've never hit a revo and was just about to order one when my friend started to make his own carbon fiber shafts. I hit his prototype, and I loved it! His shafts have a small white ferrule that helps with sighting the cue better. And for me, that was huge. Hopefully predator realizes this element that a lot of "regular" players would like to have and give it to them. But anyway, I'm glad you made this video so I will have some criteria to evaluate my new shaft which should be finished in a few hours. I'll let ya know how it goes.

      Thanks for the comment! If you haven’t seen it already, I just put out a cynergy review yesterday and it has the white ferrule and that’s one big reasons why I bought it. In defense of Predator, they have recently started making the Revo with a white vault plate. It’s not as big as a small ferrule but it’s nice to see them listening to their customers. I am about a dozen years younger than you are but now I feel very encouraged. I am a music instructor and performer and picked up pool around 2013 and became addicted from the first hit. I fell in love so much with the game that I took lessons just to understand it better. I was fortunately to run into a former pro(J. Very honest opinions and reviews. I almost had the exact love/hate feeling. But over the time I have been adjusted my aim so apart from the price, I am enjoying basically only pros and no cons from my revo. Of course I would also argue that the price is worthy considering the longevity and consistency of the shaft, as long as you are serious about pool.

    • @PoolAddiction
      @PoolAddiction  Před 4 lety +1

      It has such low deflection you have to make some adjustments. Over the years, I have had to make those adjustments with other LD shafts and you have to like the way to aim (not having to adjust for shaft deflection). I have heard a lot of gripes from people saying LD shafts suck but I think some people feel their game is better with a regular shaft. Price is still a major issue for most people but I think with all the other competitors out there now I think the price will be coming down a bit. This is a very opinionated subject and I love talking to people about so thanks for the comment, it definitely helps people on this channel to get other thoughts other than just mine.

    I find my Revo 11.8 does come loose quite often. I have added tightening the shaft to my pre-shot routine, as the shaft comes loose often enough to make tightening the shaft mandatory for each shot just like chalking the tip. It is slick, but here in the Philippines the slick shaft is a real plus (high humidity). I have also dropped my cue enough times to make me appreciate the no nicks on the shaft.
    Even though this is four years after the initial upload of this video, I really appreciate your review.

      I love my meucci carbon. But 12.75 would be an issue on thin shots for me as well. I got it specifically because it was the only cf thatcoffered 12.25 mm. My lucasi 11.8 was a bit outside my skill over long rail shots, but the 12.5 killed my short rail control in 9ball. The 12.25 really hit the sweet spot and allows me to go back and forth between it and the 11.8 in 8ball

    I think a small piece of automotive pin stripe wrapped around the ferrule area might work wonder and hold up pretty good. I did a thin layer of painters tape and it just wears to quick but works nicely. Also you could just add a chunk of white or other colored material between your tip and vault plate?? More you add more deflection it will add. Might get it right where you need it.

    I bought the Revo 12.9mm version. I decided on the radial joint version and it came with a soft Kamui Black Clear tip on it. I chose the radial joint version because I have 2 playing cues and a break cue that has that joint, and other cues with different joints. When I use this shaft on my AE cue I get a distinct plinking sound. The shaft diameter and the cue diameter match very well. When I use it on my Samsara cue I never get the plinking sound. But the Samara cue is slightly thinner than the shaft. I don't mind playing with either cue, but I've been using the Samsara because it was easier to change the weight to more heavy. When I try a wood shaft I feel like it is sticky, even though that is what I used to use.

  • @VIDEOAC3D
    @VIDEOAC3D Před 4 lety +5

    Try a Kamui hard tip. I had soft and medium tips for years. The difference in accuracy is very noticeable, and they don't flatten out like you described. If you already have a decent playing break cue with a hard tip, try one of those cut shots. I think you may be really surprised. Then imagine that with the added benefit of a low deflection shaft.
    In retrospect, it's simple physics. You wouldn't drive a nail using a hammer with a pillow head. Intuition would lead you to believe that a soft tip conforms and bites the ball better, which is "mostly" false. It does bend though, adding to the squirt effect, pushing the ball offline. With extreme outside english your tip ends up looking like this as it strikes the ball:
    ==============//
    And it doesn't deliver the kinetic energy nearly as efficiently.
    Most chalks are powders such as fiberglass, which is harder than the porcelain balls. Think of applying 3000 grit sandpaper to your tip to bite the ball. Diamond dust would work really well if it were cheaper lol. But that's what is actually causing the tip to grab. So a harder tip with a nice dime shape keeps it's contour better, delivering more kinetic energy in the "actual" desired direction.
    Side spin:
    =================)) _______O-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-
    However, I'm not suggesting a porcelain or phenolic tip either. Lol. Too hard and it won't hold chalk, and won't bite the ball at all. Plus all of your shots would make a terrible "tink" sound. Like chalking a phenolic jump cue. PITA and almost impossible to chalk... But in that same light, think of how efficiently a phenolic tip is able to drive the ball into the table with massive force, from a very small/light cue.
    IMSO, something in the low to mid 80's (hardness scale) is ideal. I think most players who use soft tips actually prefer the feeling and soft sound, not realizing the drawbacks.
    You would also need to replace your tip FAR less often. I was going through medium tips every few months with very little shaping /pricking. They would flatten or mushroom (which is the worst), and magically shrink/disappear until they were the thickness of a dime. I had an accidental kamui soft install, and it lasted 2mo.... The Kamui hard (same brand) lasts me a year with daily play, and requires very little maint. But best of all, I get better more consistent and more accurate shots.
    I hope that helps.

      I agree with pretty much everything you said here. I like my Kamui black clear medium tip and it's hardened up a little bit over time so it plays more like a medium/hard tip now. Might switch to a hard tip when this one eventually wears out, it helps chalking the side of the tip kind of roughly to smooth out and counteract mushrooming. Also I dont break with my playing cue, I break with a 22 oz hard rock maple butt and 13.2mm shaft with a Samsara break/jump tip so that might explain why my tip doesn't mushroom out faster. Been using the same one for 4 or 5 months now and might have to replace it soon but as of now it's just fine.

My other friend said they clean easy and plays good. After hitting a few balls... I was slightly impressed because in the end... You still have to pocket balls... I'm more drawn to the idea of not having it warp and wiping clean after use or leaving it in the car. Would I buy one? Still undecided... They're pricey. Thanks for the review!

      I have played with 4 different carbon shaft brands and I love the feel of a carbon fiber shaft....so smooth! The feedback from the hit is good as well. Like any other low deflection shaft, you don't have to compensate for squirt as much as a regular shaft when you aim and some people are just used to compensating and they don't want to change. As far as it helping your game is like with any other piece of equipment, you have to get used to it and sometimes it just doesn't work for your game. The question is, does it help your game enough to warrant the price tag. I'd say it doesn't help enough for most people. Thanks for watching!

    It doesn’t matter what you use to stop deflection when striking the cue ball. You can try a carbon steel rod, a carbon fiber shaft or a fence post and as long as you don’t strike the cue ball at the PERFECT center, there will be some deflection! Practice will work much better than a carbon fiber shaft and will provide a much better result at a much lower cost.

    • @PoolAddiction
      @PoolAddiction  Před 4 lety

      Agreed and no where did I say a CF shaft is zero deflection, it's a lower deflection shaft than a normal shaft. Practice always makes perfect but your game is going to adjust to what you practice with whether it is a normal shaft or a LD/CF shaft. This is has been an ongoing debate since LD shafts first came on the scene and everyone has their own strong opinion about them. There are other advantages to CF shafts as well which no warpage and resistant to dings as well as the finish nice and smooth without all the maintenance. I know those things don't make the shaft play any better (and a shaft isn't going to be the magic bullet, it's the person) but it's nice they have those features. Thanks for the comment and I hope you enjoyed the video!

    • @melc8049
      @melc8049 Před rokem

      I'm of the camp of thinking, "It's not the arrow; it's the Indian." CF shaft has there uses, but I feel they are more of a crutch. It won't fix bad mechanics. It will be more forgiving for poor mechanics because of the low deflection. In my opinion it is a side benefit of what many engineer shafts were trying to accomplish. Wood shafts have shortcomings because of its inconsistent nature. First were metal shafts, aluminium and someone made a steel one. Not sure if someone tried titanium. Then there were the fiberglass and coated shafts. It then progressed to laminated shafts. Today we have the progression of shaft technology in CF. It is consistent, durable, easy maintenance, and .....Low deflection. Is CF worth the cost? Well, if you're someone who leaves his cues in a hot car, never cleans it, throws it around or lends it out without considerations, then yes. Using one because it's low deflection means you have poor stroke mechanics. Won't matter what cue you use, you will always have poor stroke mechanics. It also means you will have a harder time adjusting to other cues and particularly to those that aren't CF. Cursed. Plus, most people I know who use CF shafts usually use them in combination with gloves. Why is that?! Moisture! So now you have to have additional equipment to use a CF. Though I think the "functional" part of a good shooting cue is the shaft, you can't ignore the butt end. I feel the next cue advancements might come in the form of a modified joint or butt section. There's already cue mid and butt end extensions and pins selections, but I think we'll see something more from an electronic inclusion in the construction of the butt end. Or maybe some sort of internal dampener. Just for giggles, I wanted to make a cue that lit up after hitting the cueball. Annoying, I know, but funny to me. ADD: Why would PRO's use it? My thinking is if it improves your game 5%. If you're like most of us, 5% won't mean much. If you're a PRO, 5% gives you that much more of an edge over some other PRO. It's more useful to you.

    • @Joseph-xi5bt
      @Joseph-xi5bt Před 7 měsíci

      Definitely. I find that CF shafts just hits more consistent. More durable too. The declection issue not a big deal. It is more of a practice thing, how you adjust aim with spin. If you are an advaced player, you will probably maximize the equipment better and gain more from using premium equipment. If you give a beginner expensive equipment they will unlikely benefit from it. Master the basics first, then look for the equipment that works for you.

    Thanks for the video, good stuff. A couple of things you may want to know about or try with your Revo. I'm on my third CF shaft, 2 of which were Revo 12.9's. The oe victory soft tip sucks, everyone I know who has the Revo changes it out as quick as they can. After 6 or 7 different tips I found the Zan hybrid max, it has a soft feel but awesome durability. Everyone who's tired it loves it.
    Here's an easy fix for the ferrule. Tape off an area where the ferrule would be and paint it white with a high quality spray paint. Do 3 light coats, looks great, doesn't affect the deflection and lasts forever.
    Over the past couple of years people have started adding tip pads to change the sound or protect the tip area of the shaft. Lots of tips come with a pad so some people have 2 or 3 pads under their tip and don't know it, just one tip pad can double the shaft deflection. Funny thing is it sounds like you might like going that way, the Revo is about stiffness and brute force, the Cynergy is quite flexable and more delicate. Last thing. Many pros put a med or hard tip on their CF shafts. Last info(1/19) on SVB's Cynergy shaft is he's using a hard Kamui brown tip.

    I just ordered my first predator. 1/28/24 hopefully.
    I hit with the tiger, Jacoby, rouge, defy, meucci, cynergy, koda?, viking and I think becue?
    I narrowed it down to defy... But too "soft". Rouge (awesome) and cynergy (long taper lost it for me).
    So pechauer and predator felt like the ultimate so it came down to other intangibles. $950 for the pechauer i liked vs $944 for the predator i liked. Negligible. Both have lifetime warranties. All the dealers in my area said that both companies were extraordinary to work with. But predator came through in the end because they hold their resale value, the unilock joint which is much easier to come by than the pechauer joint and I can get the same extension for the cue for $75 less ($170 was insluting, even though most are doing that crap except cuetec and predator).
    Except for one guy that traded his predator for a Jacoby and one that traded his for tiger, I can't get anybody in the Central or Eastern Pennsylvania area to bad mouth that Revo shaft. Even my carom playing buddies are enamored of it.

      The color of the shaft is more to with a personal preference and shouldn't affect you're shooting unless it's subliminal. A 314 shaft is a wood shaft so it shouldn't be any different for you. As far as an LD shaft vs a regular shaft, there is a difference and not everyone likes it. What you are probably experiencing is the adjustment you learn to make when shooting with a cue that has regular deflection. What I mean is you have learned to offset your aiming to make certain shots. An LD shaft enables you to aim more true to the shot. Like I said earlier, not everyone likes it and they're used to making those adjustments. For. me. I prefer an LD shaft. Thanks for the comment and I hope this helps you out.

    A very good review of the shaft pool is so mental that any doubt in equipment can cause a problem with your game as for me Rick Howard made a shaft or me I would not trade for any Preator shaft and I believe deflection is more mental than a real problem it is sales hype to sell garbage material for shafts but IMHO so very good review

    • @PoolAddiction
      @PoolAddiction  Před 4 lety +1

      You're absolutely right with regards to the mental side of the game. You do have to change your aim and alignment with a shaft that has different deflection characteristics but the mental side of it has a lot to do with as well. When I was using the Revo, no matter how much I felt I was trying to align myself and aim differently (trying to adjust to the less deflection of the shaft) I was consistently hitting the same area of the rail with the object ball. I honestly think it's in my head at this point. Everybody is different whether it's pre-shot routine, pattern play, aim, alignment, feel, and what they tend to prefer to make them comfortable so it's always going to be differences in opinion on who likes what, if that all makes sense. At the end of the day if you found something that works for your game stick with it! Thanks for watching and the comment, I enjoy hearing from everyone on their thoughts and experiences. It helps to learn from others.

      I have not tried the SMO, the J.Flowers I had was the older version. The 2.0 DR is really nice, I'd say they are both close in characteristics except when it comes to the amount of spin transfer a CF shaft produces. The 2.0 DR can get the same amount of spin transfer but you have to put a little more into it when compared to a CF shaft, but that goes for any CF shaft. For me, I like the hit, feedback, and feel of the 2.0DR better (more like wood obviously). The deflection comparison is negligible.

      I don’t think you need something that costs a lot and I wouldn’t recommend a carbon fiber shaft right away. Depending on how much you want to spend can depend which brand is good. If I went off of $300 like what you had 30 years ago, I’d say maybe Lucasi. If you wanted to a bare bones model a Mezz, Predator, or Joss might have one in that price range. Out of the three, I’d go with the Mezz.

    • @PoolAddiction
      @PoolAddiction  Před 3 lety +1

      I would recommend to try several of them out before spending that much money. Some just don’t like CF shafts and they all play a little different. The Revo is a nice shaft but it didn’t fit the I play. What I mean by that is, in my opinion, everyone has a natural way they aim and that’s where some people will naturally comfort with a zero deflection or may prefer a little less deflection. You can adjust for this but for me, if I can get as close to where I feel the most natural the better. The Revo is very low deflection shaft and it was nice but it just wasn’t for me. I’ve been lucky and was able to try several shafts. I will tell you that you will a good difference between your 314 and the Revo when comes to deflection. If you don’t want that much deflection then the Cynergy might be.a better choice. It’s a big investment when buying a CF shaft and it’s not magic pill but with practice with it, I feel it can improve your game.

    Never been a fan of predator shafts; revo or otherwise; just think they are over marketed and the playability between two of the exact same shafts can vary remarkably. As far as the cost is concerned you have to look at it as an investment and whether it’s worth it or not depends on how often and how much you play.

    • @PoolAddiction
      @PoolAddiction  Před 3 lety +1

      Very good points about determining whether it’s worth it or not. I do think the carbon fiber shafts do play differently than wood and some just don’t like it. The different carbon fiber brands play differently and in some cases drastically different. With low deflection wood shaft brands, there was a little bit of difference but it’s a lot more difference between carbon fiber shafts. I haven’t been able to see if there’s a difference between identical carbon fiber shafts though. That might be a really good thing to test out sometime. Thanks for the comment, I really enjoy discussing these ideas.

Whenever someone gives me a custom cue the first thing I check is the finish. I have seen Cogs that are 25 years old and the finish is still smooth as glass. The problem is you have to have a pretty smooth stroke to play with a cog because if you don’t it will magnify every flaw.

    • @PoolAddiction
      @PoolAddiction  Před 4 lety +2

      This is a long debate throughout the years, when I first got into pool it was the LD shafts and they are snake oil. Now it the CF shafts. As I say in most of my videos everyone's game is different and people like different things. It's like in all sports like golf for instance, some people like a flex golf shaft, other stiff or steel......everybody is different. In pool you one-piece or two-piece, weight, length, joint type, tip diameter, tip type/brand, and I can go on and on but in the end, people need to find what works for them. As for me, I play with the Cynergy now and I notice a difference. It's more of what makes you most comfortable so you can concentrate on the shot or game itself, it's not going to magically make you play better but it may help you enhance your game. There's a guy on AZ billiards forums (Mustardeer) that put it rather well when he said and I am paraphrasing, The CF shaft is like a new pair of basketball shoes, sure it helps you because they are new and have better grip or whatever but it's the player that makes them great not the shoes on their feet. I would be curious to see if the old greats like Mosconi and Caras would think if they tried any of the new gear out there, chances are they wouldn't like them because their game is already built around the tried and true pool equipment......but maybe not, we will never know. Thank you for the comment and I hope you enjoyed the content!
