    As someone with an honours degree in economics let me explain the feasibility of providing healthcare to everyone in the US. The US spent a little under $10000 per capita on healthcare in 2016. Suppose for argument sake that remains true for another decade and we hold the population constant. That gives a lower bound estimate of 325 million x $10000 x 10 years = $32.5 Trillion with current uninsured levels. Medicare for all is even cheaper than this lower bound and it would insure everyone. It would remove overhead and administrative costs and allow the government to bargain for lower drug prices. Australia for example has Medicare for all and spends less than $5000 per capita and has significantly better healthcare outcomes. In addition, Medicare for all would improve preventative care as people would actually visit the doctor reducing expensive emergency procedures. Finally, I would like to make the point that like education and public roads, healthcare has positive externalities which a private provider would not take into account and hence would under provide. Therefore, government provision is warranted.

      When people talk about "its gonna cost money" they dont take the average persons payment for ensurance into account, which ofc they should but they dont... but its pretty annoying to listen to leftleaning people who seem to suggest that this is going to be paid for by taxing the rich.... it isnt, this is going to be paid for by taxing the middle class, thats how every other country has done it, im from sweden and i like this system, but i do pay shitloads of money since im a healthy 30 year old for people who arent healthy...
      So yes, the rights "its gonna cost you more" is bullshit, but the lefts "we will give you free shit and the rich is gonna pay for it" is also bullshit...
      And take it from someone who works as a doctor in a socialised medicine country with no insurance companies for healthcare and so on... if you like to get shitloads of unnessecery tests and CT-scans and so on and you think quantity of care is better than quality, then you will not like socialised healthcare... if you want healthcare where the doctor, uncorrupted, makes the best decision for you, about tests and xrays n so on, you will love socialised healthcare like we have in sweden... and we do have problems with queues for non emergency surgery, but its equal for everyone, although the rich here just buys private insurance and skips the queue anyway.

      @Amy McCain The girl is STRONG. She is going to be a FORCE.

    • @catmani2
      @catmani2 Před 5 lety

      She will most likely win, as shoe has no competition in that district. (meaning that the republican stands no chance no matter who he is) Frankly, since most of the candidates she endorsed failed miserably, she will simply get the seat in the house and stay there for two years and not make a single difference. Then she will come up for reelection and she will get beaten by a democratic challenger because her views are utterly garbage, have no basis in reality, she cannot intelligently defend them, and she has constantly failed in explaining the basics of economics.

    • @johnlucas1.public971
      @johnlucas1.public971 Před 5 lety +2

      @catmani2 Ummm, you might wrong about that. Well, most of that anyway.
      You're right that she has no competition in that district. The Republican Anthony Pappas has barely raised funds & has the most basic campaign website imaginable. He's 72 years old & more focused on highlighting family court issues due to his divorce drama with his ex-wife. Based on the platform Alexandria's running on, his platform is entirely out of place.
      She DOES have sneaky Joe Crowley hanging around on the Working Families Party ballot (WFP stupidly auto-endorsed him early on & can't get him to remove himself from the ballot). But she's way too famous now for him to overcome.
      She just got 839,000 Twitter Followers at the time of this writing August 28, 2018. No way he can touch her now.
      Now while every candidate she endorsed didn't get through, a good number DID & WILL. Keep your eye on Zephyr Teachout for New York Attorney General & Cynthia Nixon for New York Governor for 2 examples.
      She will get the seat in the U.S. House of Representatives for New York District 14 but she will NOT stay there for 2 years.
      She will have that seat as long as she wants that seat. She's a fixture in the community & loves her community.
      They seem to love her back. She gets anything substantial done, she's locked in for as long as necessary.
      She WILL make a difference & more than a single one. She's ALREADY making a difference as a mere candidate!
      So once she's actually in office, watch her work. She's not the usual politician. "The Right Wing" knows this best.
      No challenger will be able to touch her when it comes time for her re-election. She plans to be strongly rooted to her district so she has no worries about being Joe Crowleyed spending time in Washington D.C.
      Her views are EXCELLENT & I bet that's not all the views she has in mind. More will come as she performs in office.
      I have a feeling she will INNOVATE Congressional Representation in her time as a U.S. Representative.
      She is firmly based in reality & she is very intelligent since these aspects are reflected in her oratory & media appearances.
      She defended Medicare For All BRILLIANTLY to CNN's Chris Cuomo & she was a MAJOR in Economics.
      This background will be seen prominently in her advocacy in Congress. You're wrong, catmani2. Wrong.

      I don't think she has been on the scene long enough for there to be any "legit" criticism. What seems to have happened earlier this month is that maybe 50,000 people in America listened to the whole transcript, and then the usual suspects in "conservative media" screwed around with the part about how it's not the 1990s anymore, and that the moderate "upper middle class" isn't what it was then. I took it to mean that even the minimansion crowd in Somerset County, New Jersey has to struggle more than in the good-ol' 1990s. She needs to be challenged now because she will not be ready to actually defend her ideology from real challenges in the general election.

(Bernie Sanders was the one-and-only to oppose it !!!) Why don't 97 senators ever go get interviewed by TYT, RT or other online News shows? Answer nr. 1 : Because they ALL rely on the softballs and pseudo hardballs by Coumo, Tappers, Wallace & co. And the facts are that social democratic policies would in fact save Americans money, as much as the right hates that. Obama did nothing. He didn’t create vast political change. There's one thing they cannot obfuscate. That's voice tone, inflection and the differential nature of their questions depending on who they're questioning. DNC tools? Softball, never critiquing queries. Progressives? Straight into a series of "justify your positions" queries.

People value honesty and courage over being soft, stealthy and non-confrontational. That’s simply not true. If it was t for the heavily socialist influenced kibbutzim, there would be no Jewish State. David Ben-Gurion was an ardent socialist. Not to mention Israel has universal healthcare and a strong safety net. Why? Because they get military subsidies from the US government and heavy donations from the Jewish Diaspora. Not to mention receiving reparations for the Holocaust. The have a free market economy with distinct strong social democratic undertones.

    • @asunduko1
      @asunduko1 Před 5 lety

      I don't think you understand the operative word "attempted". If Kibbutzim and Moshavim are such a recipe for success then why are they dying out and infinitesimally small part of the economy? Shouldn't there be more of them than in the years past ? Yes, Universal Healthcare is great but apparently that universe doesn't include their war heroes and intelligence agency chief like Meir Dagan who was denied a liver transplant. Israel was getting much more help from diaspora decades ago (there was an article about it last week), and US military aid is at least 40 years old and German reparations even precede those. And none of which helped it one iota become a prosperous nation. Free market economics + undoing years of socialist cronyism and corruption did.

    The "left--right thing" is not even two dimensional, it is one-dimensional. AOC is speaking for so many of us, the big economic issues are indeed moral issues with clear moral choices. As for Ben Shapiro, asking AOC to debate him is the same sort of waste of her time as someone like myself asking Ben to debate me. Not to mention isn't it a violation of US law to offer money for such a debate with a political candidate? She has way bigger fish to fry. Debating Shapiro would achieve nothing for the democratic socialist movement. Does anyone think Shapiro is open minded enough to admit he has his entire moral foundations for his economic outlook all wrong? No way! Seriously. He is one of the most closed minded, belligerent, mean-spirited didactic nerd that I've ever heard. You only debate such people for laughs, let him debate Sacha.
    One other thing: what sort of moral character does someone have to have to resort to money to get someone into a debate? It's pathetic. If he had a brilliant solid argument against the goodness and morality of AOC's politics he would not need to entice her with money. He should know money does not motivate AOC, to even think she would be sucked in by the lure of greenbacks is to cynically assume she does not believe in her principles. Which makes Shapiro worse than a slimy capitalist, he does not acknowledge that some politicians actually have moral scruples and live by their principles. But it's such a conservative neoliberal dogma isn't it? Money can buy anything they think, freedom can only be found through market mechanism they believe. Such naivete and simplicity. That's what make a dude like Shapiro so cocky ad confidant, his ideas are so simplistic he can have a lot of faith in them because they lack all nuance and historical context.
