  • Vaccines are a modern miracle. Individual freedom is a value we shoud cherish. We love both!
    Welcome to Episode 27 of Everything is Everything, a weekly podcast hosted by Amit Varma and Ajay Shah.
    In this episode, Ajay and Amit rave about how beautiful vaccines are -- and ask the thorny question, should the state step in to produce vaccines, & coerce people into getting them? They use the toolkit laid out in the previous two episodes to dig deep into when state coercion is justified. Spoiler alert: most of the time, it's not.

    I was so hooked to the renditions by young Ishaan! Though that isn’t a reflection on how interesting & insightful other parts of the episode were.

    You’re doing a marvelous job of teaching me the inviolable principles of freedom and hence making me a better father. Thanks to your work, my relationship with my daughter (4 years old) is that between two “intelligent” creatures and not that of a superior and a subordinate ❤

    Seeing that Ajay knows soo much of about mRNA and DNA and adeno virus vaccines, Either he has very smart friends to tell him that or he is a hell of a reader of research papers and research journals, I am a 2nd year student at IISER yet and recently was working on mRNA vaccines , It's amazing you know soo much;)

    Great episode as always. Brought interest in a subject which seemed a mundane yet necessary evil for so long. Nevertheless, I wish to bring a concern to both of you. Whenever, there is a death due to cardiac arrest(especially among youth and so called fit people), there is an uproar about covid vaccine being responsible for the cardiac arrest. I know people,who were apprehensive about the booster shot due to this reason. How to address this issue, as we are in this age of information/disinformation? Will be great if you can throw some light on this fear mongering.

    Couple of questions:
    * Even in cases where there is an "eradication dream", should we not resist coercion? It feels like a slippery slope. My sense it's important to build a culture that promotes consent and resists coercion in society - and that any sort of intervention that breaks the principle - will corrode freedom.
    * How do you think of policies that restrict the free movement of people who are not vaccinated into public spaces (schools, parks, hospitals, transportation)? Is that level of coercion justified?

    • @ajayshah5705
      @ajayshah5705 Před 6 měsíci +1

      Both great questions.
      I feel clear about one (coerce people when eradication is attempted). The other lacks a clear and fixed answer, as it depends on the costs and benefits.

      @@ajayshah5705 Why did the other vaccination attempts not require this level of coercion? The 20th-century vaccines were adopted without the kind of state pressure we saw for COVID-19. What changed?

      Apart from MAGA people in the US was there hostility to covid vaccines in many other places? And then, we have to think: in the US, what changed. The MAGA of 1918-1941 did not fight vaccines.
      In China, the people (and particularly older people) mistrust the government, so once the government pushed vaccine nationalism the people mistrusted the vaccine.
