  • Through riveting and moving personal recollections of both Palestinians and Israelis, 1948: Creation & Catastrophe reveals the shocking events of the most pivotal year in the most controversial conflict in the world. It tells the story of the establishment of Israel as seen through the eyes of the people who lived it. But rather than being a history lesson, this documentary is a primer for the present. It is simply not possible to make sense of what is happening today without an understanding of 1948. This documentary was the last chance for many of its Israeli and Palestinian characters to narrate their first-hand accounts of the creation of a state and the expulsion of a nation. Hear stories from the Israelis and Palestinians who personally lived through events in Haifa, Jaffa, Dayr Yasin, Acre, Jerusalem, Ramla, Lydda and more. These shocking and dramatic events reveal the core of what drives the conflict today.

    Note from the producers:
This documentary is ten years in the making. We collected dozens of stories from fighters, refugees (many still living in camps) and survivors of the war. Their stories are powerful, heart-breaking and shocking.
On top of those interviews, we conducted a mountain of research (over 20,000 pages of history), painstakingly fact-checking every statement made in the documentary. Our team gathered photographs and film from archives across the globe. We retrieved copies of military orders from Israeli archives. We translated dozens of Arabic and Hebrew interviews as well as secondary documents. And we interviewed and consulted with some of the most respected historians in the field.
This has been a colossal amount of work. We sincerely hope you get something out of it.

in addition to this docu, there is also a 18min docu (here on YT) by the Balfour Project - called: "Britain in Palestine 1917-1948". Please search for it (links in comments often get removed, hence i won't include it). In the 18min video, the earlier history is outlined w/ more details&dynamics of the betrayal/conflicting promises at the base of this bloody and heart-breaking mess. - Thank you.

As an Indian who got their Independence in 1947 among many other countries during the post WW2 period, it's crazy that how this tragedy is not spoken about much in the mainstream. While we got freedom another group of people lost everything. Feeling guilt for one religion doesn't give you the reason to excuse them to carry out the same atrocities that they have faced throughout the history. It's as if we learned nothing from the history. It's a shame to call ourself humans when such suffering takes place anywhere in the world. It feels as if the word human is a curse on us. Much love to the Palestinian people and Jewish people who're caught up in this tragedy.❤‍🩹

This film omits pre 1948 history that accounts for what happened. To me it looks like the post war Arab world rejected partition and prevented the Muslim population from self determination. They declared war on Israel before it was even a legal State.
The Arab Muslims refused to negotiate. They refused to make room for holocaust victims fleeing post war Europe. I think at least 50 percent of the displacement history was self inflicted, based on what I've read.
And we can refer to the Syrian displacement of FIFTEEN MILLION of their own citizens due to civil war between Muslim people and ethnic minorities to understand how multiple forces create these tragedies. Arab and Islamic extremism is the atomic core of present-day conflict.

@rotkatzeredcat4284 how can you even say that? Six million Jews were murdered throughout Europe and were subjected to ghettos and pogroms for generations. Nothing like the genocide of Jews ever happened to the Palestinians.
Gazans have been crossing the border into Israel for work. Israelis left their homes and businesses in Gaza , so Palestinians could settle there. They receive billions in aid.
They are very close to full national status. They do not want peace, they want Israel.

The Israelis, are basically dealing with a people who refuse their right to exist. This is the barrier to peace sadly and it is the ordinary people both jewish and arab who suffer and pay the price of their leaders, who make bad decisions on their behalf. Israel has its faults, but it has never denied the right to exist for the arabs.

I'm nearly 70 years old and I've studied WWII and the Bible before I was even 10 and this is the first time I'm hearing about this! It's unbelieveable that they would do to the Palistinians after what the Germans had done. It doesn't make fighting, hatred or pride right. I'm sorry when any people die for greed and this is what this is. Why would the Palistrinians have to leave their land and their homes? That's not right especially after the Jews had their homes and businesses taken away. I blames this on the UN. There was no reason that the Jews could not have assimilated and live peaceable with thier neighbors. They could have built homes, started businesses. There was nothing stopping them from doing that. Why did Palistine lose their country? So unfair!! I'm ashamed of humanity. I find this all so unbelievable. When the Bible prophesied about Israel becoming a nation again, I wonder if God knew they would act like this. Humanities history is really disturbing. OK, I'm done!!

Israel isn't God's chosen people. They are the Ashkenazi Jews the Synagogue of Satan Rev 2 9:10, & 3:9 .....in the book of John Jesus told them they are of their father the devil. Jesus also told them they are not of the seed of Abraham or they would have known Jesus Christ was the Son of God the true Messiah. They deny Christ Jesus. & Jesus Christ told them whither He goeth they can not come ( the Kingdom of God) they turned from God, & started Baal WORSHIPPING, worshipping other gods, statue's etc....they had Christ Jesus crucified by the Roman Soldiers. If you read their Talmud they Blaspheme Jesus, & His Mother Mary. They want power, & control over the entire world. It's not the NWO but the JWO....they are very evil, racist, & full of hate. Their religion Judaism one must deny Christ Jesus in order to convert. Their Noahide law's is death by decapitation Rev 20:4.
They are building the third temple for their false messiah the antichrist.
      they are Lucifer's disciples.
Yet for generations, & generation's we were lied to by tv Evangelicals, pastors etc.....that they are God's Chosen People.
If you research all tv Evangelicals, pastors, media, all presidents in the white house ( ALL PRESIDENTS), Hollywood, LGBT, etc....etc....they control. People have been asleep for generations now. But God through the Holy Spirit is waking so many up Spiritually.
Jesus Christ of Nazareth warned us of them all through the New testament. They hate Jesus, & they hate white people period. The white population is the target. They believe white people are from the devil, & needs to be destroyed. They claim God hates white people ( their god Lucifer does) but then again he hates everyone including them. But they are deceived 😥💔
      May God have mercy 😥🙏

Please don’t be offended when I ask this question. Why are you reading the bible as if it’s a historical facts? That text was written thousands and thousands of years ago and you don’t know under what circumstances those texts were written (meaning written under oppression, raids, wars, etc.). In my opinion we were brainwashed to read the bible as historical facts when it should not be. You see with your eyes what’s happening and your eyes will never deceive you.

Hearing about the man and his baby being thrown in the oven was especially shockingly similar. The Palestinians have suffered for far too long.

It seems that they didn't learn a thing from the holocaust... except how to lie, cheat & steal. My heart breaks for the Palestinians. The jews were given more than a very fair deal with land, but they have just been greedy for more ever since, because they have still been forcing Palestinians off their land and out of their homes, so that they are forced to watch Jewish families moving into their homes, from tents! Is it any wonder Hamas has grown? I'd do the same if another people wanted to steal my homeland!

These Jews and Arabs hate story going all the way back to the 7th century in the Arabian peninsula in the city of Yathrib (today Medina). I'm not arab nor jew but i know the story. The residents of Yathrib were mostly jews and christian farmers. Mohammad the prophet of islam escapes from Mecca his birth place to Medina to seek refuge from angry Meccans who didn't except him as a prophet. Mohammad stays in Medina for 13 years and tries convert jews and christians to islam.
Medina's residents didn't like that and they kicked him out of Medina. To make the story short, he comes back with his army for revenge and Medinans were all farmers couldn't defend themselves or couldn't fight and he persecuted 800 jews in one day and the same day he changes the city's name to Medina. 3 of Mohammad's wives were jew war captives from this battle, battle of Khyber. Their problem is not about lands it's about religion. The Dome of the Rock and Al Akhsa mosque in Israel are another problem that muslims say "our prophet traveled here in his dream so we own them", and jews say "we don't care about your prophet's dreams, these are our forefathers Solomon and David's temple and we own them".

Wars and agreements, and you say that the land of the Jews has existed for 3,000 years as if it were yesterday. There is a state called Palestine that was under Ottoman rule in which there were Jews, Muslims, and Christians. Then they gained independence from it after the First World War and became under the rule of the British Mandate, which was keen, since 1922, to encourage the Jews. In Europe and the world to immigrate to Palestine and grant them the Balfour Declaration to establish a state for the Jews in Palestine, and the United Kingdom is the one that encouraged them to choose Palestine to protect its interests. There was more than one option to establish their state. The British Mandate provided them with many facilities, aid, training and weapons until they reached the year 1946. Britain handed over Palestine to the Jews so that they could do what they could to displace the population from their villages, including massacres. But then out of fairness, you should also watch documentaries about the 1929 Hebron massacre and many other committed by Arabs of Palestine on Jews (as well as Muslim massacres of Jews outside of Palestine). This was not a one way street at all. Jews came to Palestine, Arabs there didn't like it and tried and sometimes succeeded to murder them. I can understand why they wouldn't like a flow of immigrants coming near where they lived. But would you want to murder them all? They called other Arab states to help them do exactly that.. and they failed!! And now they claim to be victims. Yes there were horrible crimes on both sides but if Jews hadn't stopped the Arabs they would have been slaughtered. Second, it was not really Palestinian land. They were a majority in Arabs in parts of it but it was under the Ottoman empire then the British mandate. The UN tried to solve the problem by voting a partition of Palestine which Palestinian Arabs refused to accept. 76 years later, they still want to claim that land that they never had to begin with. Those who really owned land and had to leave should get financial compensation. They can't get their land back because someone lives there. You can't fix an injustice by committing another injustice. But they should get money and memorials and a chance to tell their stories. But they can't go back in time like they say they want

My writing arm is cramped after taking down twenty pages of notes from this sublime work. I have saved it and I will recommend it in each and every post I make online.
Ilan Pappe is along with Noam Chomsky and Norman Finkelstein a giants on this topic. At such an important juncture in the conflict when Israeli tanks and troops are ammassed on the outskirts of Gaza ready to destroy what little is left there, works like this are invaluable in telling the world of the true nature and true cause of this seventy five year old conflict. Notice that I refrain from calling it a war.

Getting the truth of this conflict has been extremely difficult to do because of the stranglehold the wealthy American Jews have on American newspapers, magazines, TV shows and the movies. There have been hundreds of movies made in Hollywood about the Holocaust, but not a single word about the Palestinian Holocaust which they named Al Nakba.
With such one sided reporting and TV coverage is it any wonder most Americans are only now learning about the details of this seventy five year old conflict. I don't call it a war because for a war to happen you need both combatants to have weapons. In this situation one side has an arsenal of nuclear warheads plus billions of dollars worth of state of the art military armour, tanks, mobile howitzers, anti tank anti aircraft emplacements, rockets missiles, troop carrying vehicles, jeeps, heavy armoured vehicles, and intelligence sharing with all the most powerful nations in the west. Then on the Palestinian side you have a ragtag mob of schoolboys throwing rocks and old car tires. Some "war"

I have been ruminating on this for the past couple of weeks. I hate to be thinking this because it goes against everything we have been taught from as far back as I can remember...but at some point, I feel like the question has to be asked why the Nazis and the Russians were both persecuting the Jews at the same time? Why European countries were so reluctant to take in Jewish refugees, and why the Nazis felt so strongly about one group that they would go so far as the holocaust. We have always been forbidden from even thinking it but the past 2 weeks has completely broken my mind on this subject and I am now wondering if they have always treated people like this, if they have always had this idea that they are the chosen people and entitled to what does not belong to them.
It is hard to square the gentle intelligent people that they were portrayed to be with the horrific bloodthirsty supremacists who are spewing vileness and hate and attacking anyone who dares say that killing children is wrong. ANY PEOPLE who do not believe killing children is wrong are an evil people. I know that there are large groups of Jewish people in America who do embody the intelligence and gentle nature that we were told was a trait of the faith, but by their own admission they are the minority and they are berated and belittled by the majority of Jews. My entire world view has been upended.

This is about the tenth full-scale documentary I’ve watched, from different sources, because I didn’t want just one point of view. I’ve also read a multitude of news articles from past to present. I wonder how many people, also like me, have been shocked to discover the atrocities committed by the Zionists, how they forcibly removed Arabs from their homes not because they were a threat or were there illegally, but because they wanted Jews living there, how the Hamas of today had its Jewish equivalent in the Irgun of yesteryear. The Palestinian people have been criticized for not rooting out and dealing with the extremists who oppose compromise and will seek to sabotage any effort at peace, but how have the Israelis dealt with their own? 1:07:52 - Despicable piece of humanity to have no remorse for killing the former villager and even chuckling about the “poor fellow’s” fate.

Dude, same deal with the black people that returned from the USA to Africa to create their country, Liberia. Look at their flag. Well, they went back to Africa knowing how to read and write, math, weapons and were well funded by American organizations attempting to try this course to remediate slavery. And what did they do? They enslaved the people they found over there. The former slaves, returnees, became land owners by force AND had mansions built for them that resembled.... Southern plantation mansions.

You mentioned it was pro Palestinian, if you looked at it from the Zionist perspective, you would see the same events and the same attrocities come to light "but only if they spoke the truth on the matter " Whether you wish to look at it sideways, longwayes, or upside down, the end result is that a European power, England, aided and abetted the Zionist jews to invade and occupy another people's land by means of war.

To compare Palestinian land displacements to the Jewish holocaust is false equivalency. It is an error in logical thinking. Probably deliberate because you must know these events are not remotely the same, unless you are maybe not well educated or hiding under a rock. If you really desire peace , you will at least educate yourselves about the Jewish history of the Holocaust and Zionism. The displacement was first of all following an attack and war started by Palestinian /Arab forces against Israel.
And you don't have the moral high ground. Muslim countries have displaced and expelled ethnic groups for centuries and committed mass genocide. It's happening now in Sudan, Turkey. It's ongoing in Syria. Wherever there are jihadists, there is brutal conflict. What they did in Israel, they are doing in Darfur, they have done against ethnic minorities in Turkey and Iraq. They attack Kurdish and Christians . They fight Sunni against Shi'a Muslims, their own people.
If you would stop fighting and take your issues to the public and to the UN, you might get somewhere.

    • @Nitidus
      @Nitidus Před 8 měsíci

Nakba in and of itself is a propagandistic term. It does not simply discuss the events of 1948 but it already includes a distinct narrative and judgement. It is not suitable for use in school because it forces upon students students a certain way to evaluate what happened - they are not free to develop their own opinion. This does certainly NOT mean that the events of that time are generally not discussed. It's only this specific predetermined propagandistic narrative that is ruled out in schools. The term _Nakba_ represents an attempt to create a "counterweight" to the _Shoah,_ insinuating that both are equally bad. It's a simple method for the demonization of Israel and therefore antisemitic. The Holocaust was the single incomparably most horrible event in human history. That doesn't mean every other injustice was not that bad. But its abuse for stirring antisemitic hate while literally asking for a second Shoah and the extermination of all Jews is unacceptable. There were de facto no death camps where six million so-called Palestinians were gassed.
Also, the claim that it's prohibited to speak about the subject in Israel is a blatant lie. But hey, why would anyone question your narrative if it confirms what they would like to be true?
Besides it's very interesting how as always Israel is portrayed as a demonic country of censorship and indoctrination while at the same time there's not a single word about the absolutely horrible, terrifying things that are taught in Palestinian schools. The brutal, murderous ideology permanently forced upon young kids, even in official UN schools. Not a word about the nonexistent freedom of speech in Gaza & Co., where anyone who sided with Israel would simply be slaughtered in broad daylight. No, we don't talk about that, we don't talk about the fascistoid Jihadi ideology they implant until every child. We don't talk about not one Jew living in Gaza because they would be dead before sunset, just because of their religion. But instead we complain about the prohibition of an antisemitic propaganda narrative in schools in a country where Arab kids get a world class education and are represented in a democratic parliament. Amidst all this, the one problem we mention is that one topic in public schools.
Hypocrisy is one of the main characteristics of antisemitism. I acknowledge that not a single person here cares about being called out because they live in their solidified fantasy world where the roles of good and evil are already irrevocably set. Just do me one favor and recognize that I will not read your answers, so don't get (even more) mad if I don't reply.

Forget about what the Bible says of course they know it's going to come back to them they want it to come back to them if the atrocity is good enough it'll get you into Paradise with some virgins at that. And that's pretty sick preying on people's perversions to get them to blow themselves up how ridiculous. No I'm not trivializing the conflict but what I am calling out is why they murder or martyr themselves, same thing and what do women Martyrs get? Do they get virgins too? That's a serious question. And my next question would be are they men or women and if it's women that doesn't make sense and if it's men it doesn't make sense they've had their clitorises taken off of their body at 13 years old with a piece of broken glass by some old man with dirty hands that can't see while the girl is held down by her parents and mutilated now she has no feeling in her genitalia so why would she want virgins what's in it for the female suicide bombers? Maybe a new Burka. What a prize that would be. Now when you think about it doesn't it seem more logical that religion was formulated to control people to get them to do what you want them to do and get them to not do what you don't want them to do like well all kinds of crazy shit

Many from the 1948 generation are still alive who can still account in great detail what occurred in the invasion of Palestine and subsequent expulsion of Arabs from the region in 1948 and 1949. The invasion of Palestine is one of the most recent examples of settler colonization. Can anyone in the world imagine what the indigenous of the Americas, Australia, Asia and others endured at the hands of colonizing Europeans when the camera didn't exist to record the atrocities committed? It must have been horrendous. The most repugnant evil human behavior ever. The indigenous wouldn't have the words to describe the evils done to them. Many alive can also remember the Arab pogroms, killings, and expulsion of Jews that happened at the exact same time as 1948. And, after the Balfour Declaration in 1917, between then and 1948 those Arab pogroms, killings and expulsions.
Oh, you didn't know about that part of the story? Maybe because it was just barely touched on in this one sided documentary? Or maybe none of those events happened, committed by Arabs against Jews not just in what is now Israel, but also in the surrounding Arab countries?
But yes, the pure indigenous tribes of the Americas, prior to the arrival of The Evil Europeans!
Let's see, wars of conquest to take the lands of other tribes, genocide of other tribes, raiding other tribes for slaves for both drudge work and sex... anything else??? Oh yeah! In some tribes, human sacrifice and cannibalism!
Then them damned Europeans showed up to teach those pure indigenous tribes evils like wars of conquest, etc!

Not only in what is now Israel, but also in the Muslim Arab countries surrounding Israel.
Nor mentioning that the Arab's Grand Mufti Of Jerusalem spent the later half of the 1930's and all of WWII in Berlin with Hitler, repeatedly asking him to get that Final Solution happening in the Jewish territory freed in the aftermath of WWI.

The worse part is_ still in 2023 civilized western states like Germany, UK, Sweden, France, Switzerland won't recognize this fact that "Nakba Is a Real event", still they won't recognized the sufferings and misery and the wounds Palestinian refugees had to go through, still it is forbidden to commemorate "Nakba" in Germany, UK, France. Holocaust is commemorated with ardent solemnity in those countries and we have no objection to it, but what hurts us most is, the populations of those so-called civilized countries are hardly aware of or believe in "Nakba".

I am in tears ... I've no words to describe .. I've been an anti-Israel and anti-zionist activist all my life, I knew of a lot of this, but this is so well done! To relive, relearn, hear the testimonies, it's just too much! It's devastating! All this was not even for refuges of war etc, it was a pretense, it was all for the British empire. (which still exists and supersedes our Govs) to have a nuclear military base in the ME, close to the oil, and riches, close to Eurasia ... And now, the massacre unfolding, all for gas extraction, pipelines, resorts on the beaches of Gaza, and a canal to rival Suez .. it's really sick! entirely sick!

Because the Jews have lived in that part of the world for thousands of years since the 2nd millennium ,when Israelites emerged as an outgrowth of southern Canaanites,During biblical times, a United Kingdom of Israel existed but then split into two Israelite kingdoms occupying the highland zone: the Kingdom of Israel (Samaria) in the north, and the Kingdom of Judah in the south.Until it was conquered by the Neo-Assyrian Empire in 722 BC.

@@guvnormcfc66 it's like the whole world started in 1948. That's all they care about. Never mind the Jews being oppressed and occupied by Romans (Rome) two thousand years ago in Israel. Not a religious story but fact. Or about the Jews who fought alongside the Muslims during the invasion of the Christian crusaders into Jerusalem before 1105, and when the Muslims surrendered up to the Christians, the Jews (who didn't surrender) were all burnt alive in the Shul. I am so tired of this narrative about "The Jews" stealing Palestinian land. And all this rhetoric about the 7th of October has nothing to do with the Palestinians or Muslims. It is all antisemitic chatter that is getting louder by the day. None of these people (protestors or otherwise) have said one bleeding word about the Uyghurs who are in actual concentration camps disguised as "re-education camps"

People often rely on perception rather than perspective, and this keeps the wars going on and on. You who do this are just as responsible as the wicked leaders who partake in war for sport, power, and cashflow. Nevermind that always the people, all the many people around the world are always the ones sacrificed for the whims of the powerful.
