- Grandpa made me a Rhubarb Pie for Mother's Day because he knows it's one of my favorite pies and I haven't had any since last summer. He used a recipe from 1921 that is over 100 years old.

Rhubarb pie is one of my favorites too 😊 I mix the rhubarb, sugar, and flour in a bowl before putting it into the pie shell. It helps distribute it evenly and dissolve. happy Mother’s Day grandma ❤

Hi Grandpa and Grandma! I was once again thinking just yesterday how you both are doing so it’s a joy to see the notification on my iPad that you just posted this pie recipe. I never had this but back home up north I know many people eat it and go crazy for it. I remember one of my mothers friends adds strawberries to it. If I ever get a chance I will definitely try it. Happy Mother's Day Grandma 💐 What a wonderful hubby making that for you. Yum Yum, Rhubarb is my favorite also. Love the tartness. Grew up on rhubarb. Rhubarb strawberry and occasionally with pineapple, but straight rhubarb pie mainly was the best. Mom mixed rhubarb with sugar first starts to juice a bit mixing melting sugar better then adding cornstarch, sometimes tapioca. Mom also made rhubarb sauce ate it warm and cold even on ice cream. As a child we ate a fresh picked stalk dipping in small cup of granulated sugar. What a great childhood eating fresh everything from the garden.

I also picked fresh rhubarb stalks as a child but would eat it without dipping it in sugar. The sugar must of made it taste even better. My mom's rhubarb custard pie ... RHUBARB CUSTARD PIE:
2 cups of rhubarb, cut into 1/2 inch pieces
1 cup sugar
3/4 cup sugar
3/4 cup half & half
2 eggs beaten
1 rounded tablespoon of flour
3/4 teaspoon salt
vanilla
Mix above and pour into unbaked pie shell. Bake at 425 degrees for 15 minutes. Cover and bake at 325 degrees or until custard is firm. No top crust.

We mix a generous amount of flour, the sugar, and rhubarb together in a bowl first and let it set for 20-30 minutes or so, sprinkle flour on the bottom before putting in the mixture. You need about 6 or seven cups of rhubarb, cut just a little thinner. The lattice top is used on pies with a lot of water in the filling to let some evaporate while cooking. Our family has been making and selling rhubarb pies since 1950. Love your videos!

@@GrandmaFeral Our Amish grandparents started the bakery. They made all fruit pies with the 30-minute mixture method and lattice tops so the fruit and crust bake rather than steam. Sometimes there was excess water drawn out of the filling by the sugar after 30 minutes and they poured that off. People actually ordered for the next year! They just trusted God would bless them with a good rhubarb harvest next year :) They always sold out of pea soup even though it was a great depression dinner. We love your food and shared traditions, but most of all we get joy from your relationship. You bring us joy, thank you!

I would walk on my hands from here to your house for that pie! I LOVE rhubarb but you have to be in a cold climate to be lucky enough to grow it. Maybe next year.

Hi Marty Rose we do live in the cold climate to grow it. When I was a young child I would help my Grandmother pick her rhubarb from the garden. I enjoyed eating it raw even though it was tart. Thank you for the video! I got rhubarb starts from my (non-CZcams) grandparents’ house before they died. The plant is big now but I’ve never cooked anything with the rhubarb yet. I think I’m going to make my dad a rhubarb pie when I go to visit him in a few weeks! Thanks for the idea.

Aww, Grandpa, what a sweetheart you are to make Grandma her favorite pie! And Grandma, how lucky you are to have such a sweet (sweet/tart😉) gesture for Mother's Day! I remember rhubarb growing "wild" on the farm where I grew up, but we didn't always process it into anything, since it takes so much sugar to make it palatable. It always seemed so bitter to me at the time, hence I don't have cravings for it now (though I do on rare occasions now enjoy its tartness when moderated with strawberries). Happy Mother's Day!💐

My goodness, this reminds me of my grandma's pie! I haven't had it in over 40 years. Every recipe I have seen always has strawberries. I loved her's because it was more tart than sweet. I have a strong tart tooth. Lol I just got down eating a half lemon with just salt just because I love it. Not good for teeth though lol

@@GrandmaFeral Our friend Lisa reminds me of my beloved dad (rest his soul), who shared with me his habit of eating lemon wedges not used for squeezing over the entree in a seafood meal, as if they were cut oranges. To this day I, too, have an intense tart tooth, as it were, and also enjoy dunking hunks of rustic Italian bread in strong red wine vinegar and eating the result as if it were a biscuit sopping up gravy.
Looks good Grandpa. I love simple pie recipes that my Mama used to bake. With rhubarb she would cut the tartness with fresh sliced strawberries and use less sugar. Also mix the filling in a bowl with corn starch instead of flour, so everything is coated evenly and put it in the pie crust. Of course a lattice topper on this pie. Another hint, for the first 15 minutes in the oven, jack the temperature up to 415F to set the bottom crust, it keeps it from being soggy.

Hello pie-brother! One thing I'd recommend to make sure everything dissolves and sets with a pie like this is to add spears made of butter. Push them into the top about every inch around or so right before you add your top crust.

This recipe brought me a sweet memory of a dear, late friend, with whom I'd begun an ambitious pie-baking project (during what turned out to be his final year, alas): we'd made some fine, tasty pies together, including a lattice-top peach pie -- but, alas, we never got to bake the strawberry-rhubarb pie we'd planned. I'm going to bake a version of Grandpa Feral's pie here in his honor now; thanks for the renewed inspiration.
