I've been playing off and on since basically the beta and I'm AWFUL at this game. I take 18 to 24 hours to get thru the acts, I pick up every single rare to sell or do the chaos recipe, since its my only way to make any currency. i have never crafted a single item - i dont even know where to begin with that. I've gotten to red maps twice, once victor's mage skeleton guide and once with phox RF jugg. Never seen a boss, don't know how to even get to one.
    So yeah, im bad, lol.

Dont worry I am kinda similiar. Good old times when gemcutter prisms were the gold standard.
Actually it might be the reason why we are bad. The game was vastly different to what it is now. Nowadays speed is king and you get a loot filter that hides everything less than chaos orb (I guess its divine orb now?). But I am used to playing the game slowly, to being overinvested in defense because desync (who remembers that lol), to trade ITEM FOR ITEM on the forums, to itemisation being completely different (uniques being stronger than most rares), to character progression being different (you used to have most power from skilltree and skill gems, now rare items are the king). We also had very hard time to learn crafting, because it used to be prohibitively expensive (without the crafting bench). I personally have 0 idea how to craft nowadays because I have never tried it, because i remember it being so expensive.
Maybe its my shortcoming that Im bad at adapting to the new game, but whatever, I dont play anymore. I grasp basic game mechanics pretty good but I cant be arsed to learn secret league farming strats from discord and play in this hyper efficient way that makes you a "good" poe player.
(However if you really clench your butt you should be able to get to maps in 10 hours, I just hate being low level so much that I had to learn it, lol)

Since the past few leagues I pre plan a build and push it as far as I can. Currently killed the feared 3/4 leagues so far on a self made build. This is what I live for, making fun builds for myself. Thinking of vigilant strike jugg or flicker self bleed/chill jugg next league unless some new whacky skill comes out.. or interesting reworks.

I was getting ready to release my own version of Path of Building, when POB got launced. I have been making builds since Warbands. That was a bit over a year after the release. I have been crafiting since essence league. That is 3 years after launch. I made my first mirror tier crafting in crucible. So yeah last league. I don't count my stuff synthesis since it was mirror tier for me. Nor in delirium where I early discovered the aura stacker and bought up everything needed for me and my bro. We had a blast trivialising all content in the game. Our builds ended up costing around 10 mirrors each, but they were bought for cheaps.
I do have autism and ADHD giving me hyperfocus and an unending hunger for knowledge within my passion.
Harvest league was stupidly broken, but sentinel league was even more broken. And crucible was just crazy broken, but not in the same way. And of course hinekoras locks, you could get them early on for cheaps. I bought some to sell later. Since I knew they were under prices by a lot. Thanks to experience and game knowledge.
What I am saying is, I am still learning, and I am still progressing my builds, crafting and currency strats.

I've been playing PoE on and off for about 5-6 years (started in/slightly before bestiary) with over 3.5k hours clocked on steam. I don't consider myself a good player and I often lack the patience to play every league until my leaguestarter or subsequent builds make it into red maps. I've started playing blind and later discovered build guides. Today I often watch them for ideas and inspiration on how to tackle certain problems (life recovery, defending against phys damage, dealing with ailments, etc). I've long lost interest in following guides blindly since you feel a lot more invested in making your own abomination kinda work out. That said I still feel overwhelmed by crafting and often don't know how people get good gear. I've been playing around with craftofexile though and I feel like I'm getting better at understanding what I can create on my own.

I have played for over 4k hours and I have never once looked at a guide. I get to level 90 and typically reroll to use something i found. I never play in standard so i play each character for a bout 2 weeks and forget about them for the most part. I've never sold a single item and rarely purchase anything. I'm pretty sure this is not the way most choose to play the game but i really enjoy it. Mines are my favorite and EOW or Forbidden Rite are the 2 skills i've been trying to make a build around. T14 is the furthest i've gotten in 2 weeks. The tree changes often enough that there is always a new thing to try out or something that needs to be avoided. My currency tab is always nearly empty and i am ok with that. I don't feel entitled to have exactly what others have regardless of effort like it seems many do. Ohh well 3.23 soooooooon

That amazes me every single time, I started on last year's january, improved a lot every league, last 2 leagues got a mageblood without any issue, and this league did a multi mirror build (around 5 mirrors), sometimes I chat with random players when they need help, and all of them tell me how they played for years and don't know how to craft even basic shit hahaha

Getting good doesn't equal gametime it equals gametime with a concerted effort to improve. Similar to how playing random notes on a guitar doesn't make you an expert, you have to be focused on your approach to getting better at the game. Time your campaign runs, measure your divines per hour, improve your map clear times and pathing, and watch market trends. I've sometimes learned more about the game from watching videos explaining knowledge I didn't have then playing without that knowledge assuming I knew everything.

So PoE has always been hard for me to approach.
Don't get me wrong, I love the game and I've been playing a long time up to red maps and beyond.
But my ADHD makes the complexity and FOMO absolutely psychologically overwhelming.
The part of me that is "I WANT EVERYTHING NOW" is absolutely incompatible in a game in which you MUST compromise on the content you consume.
What I realized is that I have to greatly reduce my scope, the game is good in all aspects, I have to shrink my consideration of it and go for a tangible, measurable goal in it.
I think I will try to start doing that by focusing exclusively on speedrunning the campaign.
4 Hour to act 10 seems like an achievable and easily measurable goal to set my eyes to, and I am sure that i'll learn a lot of things that can be applied to other aspects of the game.

The issue with making your own build and not following a guide in PoE is that the game will in fact actively punish you if the player doesn't know what they are doing. Sounds simple on the surface just learn the game. However, there are so many systems in place that to actually understand PoE the player needs to actually be good at math and love RNG otherwise the player will burn through their currency just to make a paper weight. That's why most people don't make it past the beach or past red maps.

I have a little over 4K hours in POE, but I have played very little over the past several years. When I started playing it on a more serious basis, I saw myself making progress each and every league, getting further and further each time. I was enjoying added new knowledge each and every league. Then came 3.15 and the great player power nerf. This set me way back in my progression. My builds that got to red maps and where I was starting to take on end game bosses now ended in yellow maps. This frustrated me to no end, and I basically now play each league for a few days to see the new league mechanic and I quit the league.
POE is balanced around the top 10% of its player base. For those of us who are more casual players, the nerfs they put into the game to try to control player power of the top 10% brutally screw the 90% who are not streamers and no-lifers who play 12-16 hours a day. Not casual or new player friendly. I would not recommend POE to most gamers. There are more casual and new player friendly games in the genre that will better suit most players.
