San Diego: I-5 Bizarre Incident 02252024

DETAILS:
911 Dispatchers received a call about a traffic accident. Two Good Samaritans found the male victim down in the #4 lane of the southbound I-5, and luggage and belongings spread down the traffic lanes. They pulled him to the right shoulder.
The victim told them that his female friend had thrown him and his suitcase out of the vehicle that he was in and then ran him over and left the scene. The male was transported with major injuries to UCSD Hospital and was in surgery for upper body trauma.
SDPD officers found the female in a Volvo SUV on the transition ramp from the I-5 south to the CA-15 north. The Volvo was on the right shoulder. Apparently, the male victim had the key flob on him, and when she drove away, the vehicle came to a stop approximately 1/4 mile away due to the key flob not being near the SUV.
The female rambled on for a while. as the SDPD officers questioned her. She eventually told both SDPD and the CHP officer that the male and her had been fighting with each other at a hotel in downtown San Diego, and the fight continued when they left. She claims that the male was driving and then started to strangle her while driving.
He pulled over, exited the vehicle, and then grabbed his suitcase. It's not clear if she admitted to running the male over, but there is damage to the hood and windshield, and there appears to be a tire tread mark on his back.
After a long period of questioning, the CHP detained her for further questioning and investigation.
The fact that she did not dial 911 to get him help, says it all.
Her phone needed to be charged.

In my unprofessional opinion, she ran the guy over and fled the scene. The way the guy's feet were flexing looks like there might be some kind of nerve/spinal cord damage. I wish him a full and speedy recovery.

They don't know the full story yet. I think they put her in cuffs to transport her to HQ, a lot of departments are required to place civilians in cuffs anytime they are transported in squad cares. And cops will usually be respectful to people that are respectful them. I also think some of them tend to treat girls a little nicer than they treat the guys.
Because she isn't causing problems or resisting in any way. 100% Compliance.

I know the female officer! She showed up when some “Nurse” drove straight into the back of my Honda 2019. From working an over night shift. Female officer ran straight to help us and got down information as quick as possible. Very great at what she does. Tiny but she is mighty!

The male is now being charged with attempted murder. Witness footage shows he was beating her head while driving. He then tried to jump infront of another vehicle when she called Police. This female js now in critical condition. Male is being detained and charged.

I worked on Volvos for a living. Those do not function as a dashcam, unfortunately for this guy.

That's horrible. Looking at the damage to the vehicle and his injuries on the ground, looks like major major internal injuries. If he survives yet to be seen. It looks too severe.

Back in the day Gage and DeSoto would strap their patients to a wooden back board before moving them to the gurney. Now, apparently, they lift you up in a plastic sack to the gurney.
Especially if they think you're homeless
It helps contain bleeding if artery’s are hit and organ "parts" more flexible and supportive than laying on a board, etc. it’s usually quicker,, easer and more humane.

The technology in an ambulance now is amazing!
I was an EMT in an ALS Paramedic unit the '90s. We had 12 lead cardiac monitors with full telemetry (live broadcast to ER), pulse oximeters, full line of cardiac drugs, several different typed of narcotics, full tracheal intubation, could perform surgical cricothyrotomys, needle thoracostomys (collapsed lung), various trauma equipment such as traction splints for the legs, MAST trousers (they quit using those), and the list goes on and on. This wasn't even new in the '90s and some of it went back to the '70s (EKG telemetry from the Ambulance and meds on board). Many people lived where there was only Basic Life Support units (BLS) so they never got to see any of the advanced stuff.
They can basically keep you alive to get to the hospital
The main difference between what you describe vs working in a state with large rural areas was telemetry didn't work so paramedics were taught to interpret patient's EKGs and treat accordingly. I'm sure you did the same ACLS training we did, we just had to eliminate the step of an ED physician interpreting the EKG and dictatiing treatment protocols. It was the same idea using paralytics, etc. When your response area is over 800 square miles and you have transport times over an hour, a lot of stuff was happening in the back of the ambulance. Believe it or not, we used to even have to 'hang' patients on stretchers from hooks in the ceiling when we had multiple patients from MVAs. Nothing says fun like transporting three patients with two critical in the back of an ambulance with you being the only medic back there. Lol

As for backboard, that is in case of spinal injury, and given he had a tire tread on his back, clearly a backboard SHOULD have been used. Before any dump on me, I was EMS and a trauma RN so yes, I KNOW MY STUFF!
I hope he is doing well... the fear and hurt in his eyes broke my ❤ heart.... :( She needs investigated to make sure it was an accident bc the way she was fake crying, leaving the scene, and not even bothering to call 911 SCREAMS criminal to me.

I ended up changing my medical group from ascension to another because ascension did 3 procedures draining my lungs of fluid and they nicked my spine causing temporary paralysis. Then they took me for tests and the transport person dropped me when transferring me to a gurney. Even an anesthesiologist dropped me on the operating table. Now I’m stuck in bed with pain most days

Friday I almost ran over a body that apparently was run over on the I-5N past Washington. Didn't realize what I saw until agree I passed. Vehicles were pulled over that either ran him over or saw the gruesome scene I saw. About 20 minutes later I circled back and the entire freeway was shut down. An hour later it was still closed and traffic diverted off.
Say a prayer for this man... 🙏

OMG! This was hard to watch as I too was hit by a car! Mine was on a hwy to, not an interstate. The accident investors concluded she was driving at 75 mph I TRULY feel for that man as he now is going to have a life of constant pain! I hope he recovers quickly! ❤❤❤

Volvo is a bad hard-shell vehicle that doesn't have a soft surface on its front grill to protect pedestrians in case of hitting them. The guy who got hit by it must be critical.

At least the cops helped verify her entitled attitude by letting her ride in the front seat. They probably could barely hold in their shame by forcing her into cuffs, in the rear too. That officer likely developed a bleeding ulcer over the stress of treating her so roughly.

So once any car is started and running it does NOT need the key fob to be present as the car will work like normal till it's shut off and the reasoning for this is car manufactures can't predict when a key fob battery could die so if every car just shut off in the middle of driving due to the key fob going dead car's would be crashing all over the place and the manufacturer would be liable so key fobs are only needed to gain entry and start the car and open hatches and so forth NOT to keep the motor running so she must have shut the car off or ran out of gas and that's why the car was there.
Actually that’s not true. Some models you must have the key fob with you. You can only drive a short distance without it. They actually have an alert that sounds if you drive off without it that way you know to go back and get it. In most vehicles you can drive without the fob on you but once you turn the ignition off you won’t be able to start it back up. Again each make and model is different but there was some that require you to have the key fob in close proximity to the vehicle.
Some vehicles use *passive RFID* for ignition interlock / speed limiting / distance limiting functionality. My Camry is one such vehicle. It came with two types of keys. One type contains no buttons, no batteries, just a passive RFID chip buried inaccessibly within. This is the "valet key" that lets the car start and drive, but with restrictions on distance and speed. The other type of key contains a passive RFID chip too, but also buttons, battery, and radio transmitter used to initiate remote lock / unlock / trunk-open functionality. The car will start and drive, with full functionality, even when the battery is completely dead. Research passive RFID tech to see how this works.

Someone in the comments gave his name, after a google search I think this guy is the same in some news articles from North Carolina and New Hampshire. If this is the same guy, he kidnapped a woman before and got a violent record.

Dang!!!!! Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned!!!! An incident like this happened on a busy street close to my condo. A young female driver slammed on her brakes and screamed at the young man in the passenger seat to "GET THE FUDGE OUT OF MY CAR". Only she didn't say fudge. They started throwing objects at one another. Later I found out she threw a large knife at the man and he threw it back, smashing the windshield. She hit the gas and took off like a bat out of hell and left him beside the road shoeless. I later saw him walking down the road barefooted, with a look of utter bewilderment on his face. My neighbor called the cops, but they didn't seem to care and never showed up. I went out and cleaned up all the trash they left on the road after their domestic situation.
That begs the question... why did so many cops show up for this incident... must've been a donut shop nearby

As for the incident described by @blandsmith113, who knows? Substantial portions of the narrative appear likely to be based on hearsay, and details important to understanding the lack of LEO response are missing.
Don't like cops? I've no problem with that; I have my own beefs with them. But maybe you should be a little more thoughtful in your attacks; mocking cops with the old doughnut shop stereotype / trope does far more damage to your own credibility than to that of law-enforcement.
The mail victim in this article is James Delray Lemmond. The female was trying to help him get home after she had been brutally beaten. A standby driver saw him holding a knife and beating her head with a glass bottle while holding her down in the passenger seat floor. She immediately press the emergency safety called button on her vehicle. At that time they reported the male victim stated he will kill her unless she states she will stay with him. The female was in place into the police vehicle not under arrest. It’s policy to be placed in a vehicle with handcuffs. She has no charge his face against her. The mail now has two attempted murder charges, as well as for aggravated felony battery assault. Assault with a deadly weapon. Attempted rape. And falsifying injuries. And trying to intimidate a victim.
