Hey everyone, it's Evangeline here at etrailer. And today we'll be taking a look at this Yakima Exo System kit. So we have the DoubleUp bike rack as well as the GearLocker and closed cargo carrier. They're all kitted together with your Exo System. So if you're planning on going for, let's say bike rides with your friends, your family, you're all going on a trip and you wanna make sure you can carry those bikes as well as that gear, this is a great way to start with the Exo System. So the Exo System is a modular system where you can mix and match different accessories.
Whether you want a bike rack one day or a ski and snowboard carrier the other day, it's very quick and easy to switch them out. So with this kitted together, you have a complete system but you can add on as needed. So with this fully loaded with cargo and with bikes up top, first let's take a look at how it performs outside in the real world on a test course. So while driving around some thoughts I have from that is one, I was annoyed at first because of when I put it into reverse, I couldn't see anything through my backup camera and my rear view window was pretty blocked because of the bikes, so I had to rely on my side mirrors. That's something to keep in mind with the Exo System, especially with the bikes.
But once I started driving, everything was pretty solid. Now if there was a little bit of movement, but that's pretty normal for when you have bikes on there. There will be movement as long as everything stays into hitch receiver. So going over those speed bumps, there was some up and down movement. Then we had the alternating speed bumps as well, which had that side to side motion.
Then we also took those sharp turns, which was our slalom. So I really like those sharp turns because you can see how the whole system stays together. If you notice there's a lot of movement on your hitch receiver. Please tighten down that anti-rattle bolt while lifting up on the Exo System. Since it's off balance, you need to make sure it's straight as you tighten it down, that will give you a tighter fit.
So for dimensions here, we're gonna measure from the sensor the hitch pin hole to the end of the carrier or the rack. So in our case here, since we have the GearLocker in place, it does add like half an extra inch, but the SwingBase is gonna be 35 1/2 inches away from center of hitch pin hole. Now for the closest point, at the bottom of the SwingBase that's gonna be 4 1/2 inches. So that's gonna be where, if you have a bumper, you might have clearance issues. Now for the TopShelf, that's gonna be about eight inches away from the center of the hitch pin hole. That'll help you figure out if let's say you have a spare tire or maybe you have a larger hatch, if you're gonna have plenty issues there. That measurement will also help you figure out if you have enough clearance with things like your pedals or your handlebars depending on your vehicle. So we'll see where that TopShelf is. That's about where the edge of our pedal is gonna be too. And if that's going to be an issue, it's perfectly fine because you can actually loosen the TopShelf bolts and slide it out so it's further away. Now, how far out would you have to scoot your TopShelf Well, if you have a taller vehicle, like a van that has those windows back there that you wanna avoid, well a good measurement is 13 inches away from the rear of your vehicle. So measure from the handlebars to the rear and make sure it's 13 inches. To swing the system away, you start with this lever. So rotate this all the way until the bolt detaches right there and now you can pull this smaller knob. And once that's out, use that support triangle to push this out 90 degrees before it touches in the corner. Now with this swung out, there's some key features here. The main one is now you have all this space to open up your hatch, swing open your doors, lower your tailgate. You can even set up your campsite right here if you have like a tailgate awning or like a hatch awning, we have those at etrailer. Some things to note though is with its swung out 90 degrees, this also makes it accessible on each side for taking off your bikes. So if you wanna grab your GearLocker from this position you can do so. You can just take it off completely. If you wanna open it up though, you are gonna be blocked by your TopShelf. So what can you do Well, you can swing this TopShelf around 180 degrees. So as long as your doors are closed or your hatches

Yakima's products aren't inexpensive, that's for sure but the ExoSwing system is very highly rated by our customers...

Do you have the option to swing to the driver side?

Unfortunately, that option isn't available, per Yakima.
