I've used this exact sentiment many times when talking to friends, especially younger guys that I mentor. It's hard to believe in yourself when you've done nothing to have confidence in. That's where you have to trust older dudes that see potential in you and have faith in their judgment of you.
Remember. Kamina only told Simon that because he's around. When he knew that he's gonna die and Simon will be left alone he changed what he said. "Believe in yourself. Don't believe in the me who believes in you. Believe in the you who believes in yourself." Having someone to rely on and cheer you onward is good, but nothing will ever stay and last forever. Not all of us can have a Kamina for us to believe in. That's why we must believe in ourselves. After all, who the hell do you think we are.
***** You should definitely watch gurren lagann next, it may seem ridiculous, but it's actually in a good way. The show is an epic piece of work, and definitely worth your time. (Plus it's my favorite anime evar so I'd try screaming in your ear but nah)
"Listen Simon... Don't forget. Believe in yourself. Not in the you who believes in me. Not the me who believes in you. Believe in the you who believes in yourself. "

Honestly this is one of the greatest characters made in any story that I can tell. He isn't a Naruto he isn't a Ichigo, he isn't a Luffy. He is all of them and way better.
He is a very classic mentor, which is killed like a lot of mentor. LIke Obi Wan Kenobi, Dumbledore. Heck, even that pervert hermit in Naruto. (I think there is even more as Naruto have a thematic of having adult entrusting the village to the new generation) Even in Phoenix Wright we have that, even in MGS3 we have that. Don't get me wrong, i loved the episode 7 of Gurran Lagann, i'm just saying that if you have to compare Kamina to someone it would be a figure of mentor, not a figure of hero.... And in that regard, his destiny is quite classic albeit very well written. I always felt like Gurran Lagan structure is like a big drill which begin small and finsih absurdly strong, poking fun at that kind of story. (At the end, even Simon can't keep up with progress of humanity) It's then normal (and quite elegant) to see that kind of trope being used.
i love the kamina's strenght his charisma is enthralling, exhilarating his courage is unrivaled, incomparable the real star of Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann
I love how his strength comes from hiden weakness. Courage from cowardice and charisma from social fear. He is all that he fears of not being and that makes him even cooler.
"Listen Simon, don't forget: believe in yourself. Not in you who believes in me. Not in me who believes in you. Believe in Simon who believes in himself."

+CyberDinosaur87 If you can't believe in yourself, believe in the version of you that everyone else is believing in. If you're a bad Soccer player but everyone is counting on you to score a goal, believe in the you that is a good Soccer player.
"Hey, Simone. I know having self-confidence can be difficult, but you trust me, right? Well, I know you can do this. So don't worry if you don't believe in yourself just yet, just believe in me for now."
I've seen a few spoiler discussions down there...look you can't expect people to shyly discuss a series that's a decade old. If you're watching it right now, just refrain from going in the comments or even watching YT videos about it at all, that's common sense. Plus I knew what would happen in episode 7 when I watched it and I didn't enjoy it any less.

agree ^^

AwesomeStuff64 He's none of them because he's actually competent and well-written with a good backstory. Also doesn't rely on plot armour.

Way better than goku too
He’s basically Joseph Joestar if deku was his adoptive brother lol
They are all great in their own way. They are all strong characters that can motivate us.
I still see Kamina as a role model, in both the show and in my own life.
This is the probably same thing Diavolo said to Doppio

I like to imagine that Simon got 1shot'd immediately after this speech.
I think what he was saying was to not believe in his own doubts and fears, but to believe in Kamina, who believes in him.

No leeway is needed in this case. I hate when translation is wrong cause it confuses the viewer. Especially with some language to English.
