3 years later. This is one of the best albums ever released In a decade. Every song is a banger, none is a filler. The production is Quincy Jones level. 10 from here my dude!
Edit::: 4 Years later, the producer Ludwig Göransson wins an award for the Oppenheimer soundtrack. There's a dude in the comments that's totally right. Melon has a total bias against glover, this masterpiece didn't deserve a 7!

Can't wait to see that 5/10 for the new J Cole album.
I don't think he'll give it a 5/10, probably worse

Dezdom I get where he's coming from but I still love it
Dezdom Best Rap Album of the year Grammy award? Hell no.
Dezdom Everyone praised the album to the point of where they thought it was a borderline Classic.
good album but camp is better
x2ceyez I just feel like so many people really enjoyed the album so then the people that didn't like it got really annoyed. I just feel like the album itself is arty and abstract but implemented in such a way that it's easily accessible. The theme and atmosphere the album holds is just incomparable with each track having a completely different vibe.
Don't know if you watch TV or do anything like that haha, but have you seen Glover's new show *Atlanta*? Even if you don't generally like his music style, you can't deny he's an overall talented dude. Doesn't really even see himself as a Rapper anymore
Yeah, but maybe Glover is overplaying himself a bit. Better to try to be great at one craft than be mediocre at two, no?
LMAO, this guy is far from being mediocre in any of the things he does.
PS: that is an excuse used by mediocre people who are not confident even on the things they solely focus on doing and therefore cannot fathom trying to do anything else decently.
Tony LeeIm hes not rating his acting, hes reviewing his music dumbfuck
Andy760 Are you having a bad day or are you usually this idiotic?
Gambino has always been an artist who has tried to do everything he's interested in doing.
The problem is that he's not too amazing at everything yet. Hopefully he'll figure it out soon enough.
He makes no mention that the entire album tells a story about two people who fall in love, have a child and the parents have to split up, but both parents attempt to teach the child that he should stand tall, no matter what, both parents want the same for his child.
It's a crazy positive message and he gets an idea through on each song. The album is meant to be listened to like a movie. Theres a crazy amount of similarities between Glovers directing style (Ex. Atlanta) and the way he makes albums.
Everything on this album is intentional. And you can hear it.
didn't donald glover say there was no autotune
he said there was no pitch shifting
How do you think auto-tune works, MepsiCax?
there has been a lot of debate over this. if you listen to the album there is clearly autotune, but its being used as an effect and not as true pitch correction. eg, take it away like his live snl performance and hes still hitting the same notes (more or less) it just provides a different timbre
Invertex a fuck more than just changing the pitch
MepsiCax It's intelligent pitch change. It's not a "fuck more", it does the pitch change in accordance with the tune, generally with some manual control to tweak it into something more pleasant.
I thought those "obnoxious" songs, were entertaining and the vocals were something new and fresh. I agree that this is Donald Glover's best projekt, but I would probably give it a strong 8 instead.
Murdrocks Kendrick’s Damn. Only got an 7 so no.
"New and fresh"
Impact Attack damn was such an overated album. Good Kid Maad City was way better.
I’d give this a 9 Tbh
he's not saying he would give a damn a 7 tho... hes saying he would give this album an 8. It doesn't mean he agrees with every other rating he's ever given

He criticizes the shit out of Donald'a music but gives guys like Yachty and Gucci a pass
But it's his personal opinions....which he backs up with critique evidence and backs up his moral reasons...It's not like he said "Donald Glover? Pure trash!" You also have to remember that these are categorized. Lil Yatchy, Gucci Mane, Chief Keef, all of these Trap-Rapstars are not the same as Childish Gambino...Childish Gambino would be with J.Cole, Kendrick Lamar, Chance the Rapper, Russ, etc...So when competing with these rappers, this purely got a decent 7. However....I wouldn't really like saying "rappers" since this is not rap...but I think you get the picture.
Exactly don't disrespect yachty, guwop, or chief keef
Fuck all those birdman/wayne face ass lookin twizzler ass niggas
Anthony is a clown. We come here for his opinion on music that's it. Nothing he says holds any weight. He is simply a music listener with a defined taste who people like to watch talk about music.
wwe2dragon I think it's because he sees a lot more potential in gambino then he does other artist. You can't really be too hard on a yatchy song because it doesn't sound like yatchy really cares himself. An artist like childish gambino or j cole put a lot of time in there music so he has a little more he can critique.
your mustache looks like a starfighter.
He got me with "Watch/10"
I really believe that California is one of those "Just fucking around, having fun" type of tracks. Which is fine, a lot of bands have those. But they normally save those kind of tracks for EPs, demo tapes that sorta stuff. I like the song, but I definitely won't argue with anyone who says it's awful. All I'm gonna say is, it's extremely catchy, but very cheesy and annoying at the same time. But, it's a fun song to listen to when you just feel like...well having fun I guess.
Or even 30 Hours on TLOP honestly.
Exactly my feelings on the song. The second I heard him start singing the first time I knew the song wasnt meant to be taken seriously and just kinda laughed along the with him while he played around for a few minutes before going back into those deep soulful tracks at the end :P
I even enjoyed it. The vocals are stupid, yeah, but in the same way that the vocals on 'Didja Get Any Onya?' off Weasels Ripped My Flesh are stupid.
30 Hours is one of the best tracks. Wtf?
.....I never even said 30 Hours was a good track or a bad track.
California is great idc what anyone says

ACURA INTEGUY I found it irritating the first time, but now I love it.

Honestly, The Night Me and Your Mama Met is one of my favorite tracks in the whole album JUST for the guitar solo. I'm a guitarist, so maybe I'm biased, but I think that that solo is one of the best of the past 5 years in guitar music. It's just so raw and emotional.
Just wait 'til he trashes Cole's new album next week.

Not really.
Adam oh okay
You're welcome.
Don't get the 7, considering all the praise he gave it. Even admits to enjoying what he thought was the worst track. Just comparatively the 7 doesn't hold up to how many 8s he gave to mediocre albums that didn't require half the effort or execute half as well as this album so I'm assuming he's grading this on a different scale of like all time music.
Rhinosaur opinions are a crazy thing aren't they?
Banderas Rojas didn't say it was wrong mr.edge. Just said I don't get it based on his own opinion. He's rated 8s to things he's had way more criticisms of than this.
Rhinosaur he rates it on an enjoyment scale. He's given 8 to some albums in which he almost didnt point out any flaws (example rtj 2). I feel it deserved a 9 but if he thinks the artist has room for improvement on the next album he downplays the score. Like there are things bad about TPAB too. But GKMC got a 9 just because he thought some hooks weren't good. U getting me?
I believe the fact them some of them praises are so strong they make a difference. If you look at albums this year that he gave a nine he had only a handful of negative things to say about those albums. I remembered he had a lot of praise for Danny Browns album, that i was almost certain he'd give a 10
Bossun7 I get it if it's just based on how much he enjoys it. That's totally subjective. Just saying there are things about music that can be graded and looked at in terms of complexity, etc, but that makes sense.

Honestly this album was really good, Terrified has to be my favorite. But I can't help but think of how amazing this would have been with an actual band rather than electronic instruments.
Tre 916 this album was terrible
+LOLMASSSS2442 You probably thought the same about TPAB. I can see you not liking this if you were expecting another Because the Internet, but this album is far from terrible.
TPAB is overrated, imo.

Tre 916 Nah. It's just that i'm not a pseudohead that forces himself to listen to shit he can't vibe to because he wants to look special.
I think this album is amazing, it literally gets better every listen for me.
Does anybody else think this album was inspired by Donald recently becoming a father? I feel like the whole album is him speaking as a father to his younger son about things like the intricacies of women (Me & Your Mama, Terrified, Redbone, The Night Me & Your Mama Met) , racial issues in america regarding police & protesting (Boogieman, Riot), addressing peoples need for leaching and using other people (Zombies) and trying to move somewhere to chase your dreams thats flooded with other people also trying to chase theirs and also trying to use you (California), he also touches on having love and caring about the people around you (Have Some Love).
It seems as if Donald is speaking as the black father figure throughout most of this album to his younger son, then has his son taken away because of his relationship with the kid's mother (Baby Boy) and the last song Stand Tall is told from the kid's perspective as a grown man in present time which is why it sounds kind of newer than the rest of the album.
That's my take on this album and it's absolutely genius in my eyes. 10/10 for what it is.
Carlos Cruz I read a really fascinating article I forget the place it was I read it. but essentially it is all to his son. hes passing along his childhood to his son. he grew up listening to the isleys and George Clinton and funkadelic so he's created something for his son to listen to, to mimic his childhood. he was giving his son a piece of him for him to have forever
Carlos Cruz Yeah. it is about him becoming a father. that's kinda the whole point.
Carlos Cruz for sure... the title, "Awaken my love!" Is directed towards his son... Tracks like redbone (unfaithful partners) zombies (parasitic friends) are warnings
Stand Tall speaks on confidence and humility
There's so much to talk about on this album but for sure it is directed to his recently born son
Carlos Cruz if you didn’t take that from some website you should make album reviews, I’d be really interested in your opinion on some.
Carlos Cruz I've been listening to this album since release, and I'm no music nerd, I understand a lot of complexities and feel like I'm good at interpreting lyrics, but what you commented just blew my mind. I never looked at it from a father's prospective (not a father obviously) but holy shit. You're a genius in my book.
I hate how, If a song isn't "in your face" it's not really good in your musical opinion. It's equivalent to a hypebeast saying a song isn't good if it ain't "lit". Although I did agree with this review, that's how you tend to rate rap songs.
Eddie That's not what he says, idiot.
Y-G-J When he does his best and worst tracks of the weak. If he likes a rap song he is almost always gonna say, it's really in your face. If the song is bad, it's usually because it puts him to sleep.
Eddie he liked some mellow rappers like open mike eagle and noname... he just likes his trap bangers to be loud and in your face not like that 21 savage or Kodak black stuff where they have a hard beat but they sound like they're half a sleep rapping
Eddie... So he dislikes albums that bore him to sleep. That's your problem? Get a life.
Eddie he literally said he loves the quieter more emotional side of the album
This is one of the few records I just keep playing over and over again.. never get enough of songs like me and your mama, baby boy and redbone. A strong 9 at least
I'd go light 9 but i feel you
I feel no anger about your opinion on Donald I'm just kind of find it jarring how much you've missed the point of him. Like you said about Awaken my Love, your opinion of him is in a different fucking solar system to those who liked it, we're not even arguing over the same points here, it's like trying to deconstruct a Trump argument. I think it may also be because you're not really interested as a music critic and listener in anything besides the nitty gritty of a musician's sound, lyrics, themes and technical skills. Whereas Donald harnesses his talent across a number of different mediums to develop worlds in which he can express his ideas about something. That's what he did with Because the Internet, if the 70 page screenplay was excessive then so was the album, it was just one part. And while we like to praise artists like Kanye for flipping the album format on its head Donald actually - like with most of his stuff see the album you just reviewed - was way ahead of his time in creating this multimedia experience around his album. That's why the idea that it's just about some rich kid who's very glum is just so freakin strange to hear, like I don't even know where to start.
I mean Atlanta and Awaken are part of the same tapestry he's linked them on purpose, thematically and literally through Awaken easter eggs in Atlanta.
It's a 10/10
thank me later
Mike Carcano you comment is a -1/10
TAS SANKAR *Your grammar is a light to decent -2.12/10
FantomasXD Depends what you're into. If you expect rapping it's gonna disappoint, but if you like artists like Anderson Paak you'll probably like this. I think it's a solid album
FantomasXD Thanks Piñata definitely is still great
I have never been a fan of gambino, should I check this out?
Cris Vargas It's not like anything he's ever done so there's a chance you'll love it. It's heavily funk inspired with heavy psychedelic rock and Neo-Soul undertones. Especially if you like TPAB ;)
I think he's heading in the right direction. The focus with the production is clear. However, the album was a disappointment. The two songs released before the album seemed like it was going to be incredible. It was like an amazing trailer but an average film. TPAB is more Jazz this is heavily psychedelic rock and funk influence.
Nope
Cris Vargas I'm not a fan of Childish Gambino either, which, for this album, I think is a benefit. If you're not a fan of his rapping you'll likely be glad due to the lack of rapping on it. I see from your avatar that you apparently like TPAB, so if you liked the funk/soul elements off of TPAB, this might be just the thing for you production-wise.
Now if you actually go into this wanting a rap album know that that's not what you'll get. If you're open to music like the Funkadelic, Bootsy Collins, Sly and the Family Stone, maybe some Prince, then I think you'd really enjoy this album.
***** There is no point going through his old shit cause this is completely different. He wants to listen to it for what it is, not the artist. Going through his old projects will give him no benefit.
Redbone is definitely the highlight of the album. I love it.
Oh for me it’s Me & Your Mama, without a doubt. Redbone is a close second but oh my goodness, nothing sends chills down my spine again and again like Me & Your Mama. I’ve come back to it each year and given it a listen and just. . . It’s something else.
@@thelingeringartist I really like the vocals on me and your mama. I don’t think the instrumental is strong enough without them.
I love redbone but oh my god it has absolutely NOTHING on the masterpiece that is me and your mama
Although I love Redbone, every time I listen to me and your mama I always have an out of body experience and my soul rises to the 4th dimension
After listening to his previous work, I didn't really expect much. But after the first track I knew I had to listen to this all the way through! The instrumentals are incredible and Donald, being a rapper, surprisingly has good vocal abilities. Really interested to see what he does next. Off I go to watch Atlanta.
Watch/10? I'll skip to the end, YOU CAN'T CONTROL ME FANTANO
I didn't know that was you on the album cover, Anthony! You looked slightly different.

Mike Blaid ewe no 😂 thats the worst song on the album😂😂 just my opinion of course

It was like having an amazing trailer with an average movie.
I agree, I feel this album is a step in a right direction with the production value/focus but he didn't execute it as well as he could have. Still a much more mature album.

pretty sure that california is making fun of mumble trap rappers
If that's the case.... that kind of changes my whole view of the song... Thank you for suggesting that.
i dont understand that what so ever " oh this track is trash but its satire " it dont matter their is no trash thats above average its just trash
Commandosoap777 Yeah, I agree with you.
There's a point where I swear he "breaks character" and laughs before going back in
I love this album through and through. It just speaks to my person and my soul tbh but I will give you that 'California' seems like a b-side and for me, is the only weak spot. I am not one to skip a song when I am listening to an LP but 'California' is the track that I could do without. That being said, here in 2016, in these particular times that we find ourselves in, I can forgive one track that might take me away from what is overall a wonderful sonic experience that I am glad to be able to partake in.
did he listen to me and your mama???
The best one from the album , when i heard it i was amazed , both by the song and by who performed it . Redbone is a good Bootsy homage ...
I can get some hate on camp but Because the internet and the projects after were genius
Does nobody like California?! I love that song, it sounds like some old daft punk production, with a very unique voice, I like- scratch that love that song
If you like it, good for you, but I think it's more annoying then anything.
Cesario Garcia it had potential to be the best song from the album but the auto tune was Terrible. And it doesn't sound like daft punk at all, maybe if daft punk were Hawaiian or something
Cesario Garcia It gets better the more you listen to it, but it still sounds like he recorded it while he was passing stones.
it's an amazing song, I can see why it's annoying, but I think that even gives it flavor in it's own way if you can get into the right obnoxious mood it'll always put a smile on my face.
STILL IN 2021 A DECENT 7 IS A DISGRACE

Thank You
Thomas Ashly you are welcome
You should have put Funkadelic - Maggot Brain on display for this review since the cover is obviously a direct influence.
I can't believe you said this, I thought the same exact thing!
it absolutely is
and the second track is SO much like Can You Get To That
Jason Wright Art I agree
the first track on maggot brain is fucking FIRE.
This nigga got the
"Hey kids, I got some WiFi in my van"
mustache
After sitting a couple of weeks with this album it is definitely one of my favs in the last few years. Im completely tired of the same old mumble rap that's being recycled daily so this was refreshing for me.
I usualy disagree. Thought it was very good. A 7 makes sense, but I really vibe to the annoying parts, so I enjoy the whole thing. A few tracks make it into my favourites of this year too, so I'd personally go higher.
I'd heard not so great things but pre-ordered the CD based on opening song alone. I was not disappointed.
I'm not angry with your biased opinion, but I gave it a 9.5/10
Ari Jordan You get a 10/10 for civility
Imnotsharingmyrealnameonthiswebsite Thanks lol.
We don't care about the fact that you refer to yourself as a cigarette, nor do we care about your sexual preference.
***** You almost had a good comeback there but even then you managed to make it sound cringy as fuck. Hold this L of the century my guy.
***** it wasn't meant for you to like it...be blessed.
Baby Boy's bass line is easily stuck in my head and it's extremely catchy for me. Definitely my favorite out of the album
I found Redbone and was enamored with it. It ended up becoming kind of a soundtrack to a tragic crush I had on someone. That led me to look through the rest of the album and find Terrified, which felt like a sympathetic anthem for the intense anxiety I had been struggling with, and after multiple listens I can say this is one of my favorite albums ever. Calling the work mature for Gambino up to that point is definitely accurate and it's very welcome. He expresses feelings like heartbreak, jealousy, anxiety, and the experience of becoing a father through soulful instrumentals and creative production to make something unforgettable.
Call me underexposed to musical variety, whatever.
I give this album a 9/10.
You can thank producer Ludwig Goransson for this masterpiece. He practically did all the instrumentation
Gambinos one of my favorite artists, and i liked the singles, so i was excited for this, but the only two listenable songs (besides havesome love, but his vocal performance on that song was atrocious) were the fucking singles, and Redbone was the best song on the entire album
Agreed 100%. The album seemed like it was going to be amazing with those singles before the album. However, the album was just a disappointment. It was like an amazing trailer for a move which turned out to be an average film.
You guys just need to keep listening to his songs. They grow on you after 3 or 4 listens and then you simply just love it! Appreciate the vocals, the layering of instruments, the pacing, everything. It really is an amazing album, it's just that people aren't going in with an open mind and reviewing it from their very first listen.
In my opinion, the best songs are MAYM, TNMAYMM, Boogieman, Zombies, Redbone, Baby Boy and Stand Tall (is godly!).
I do go in with an open mind. I am very open. It just seemed like it wasn't satisfying. I will give it more listens though. To me, the perfect album with production such as layering of instruments, pacing etc. Would be MBDTF by Kanye. Absolute masterpiece.
Sir Josh I agree, I really didn't like this thing the first time I heard it, but after listening to it quite a few times, I actually like it quite a bit
If you need to listen several times to like the song then you don't really like the song, you have just tricked yourself into thinking you do. If you don't like it the second time you listen to it then it's just not for you, simple as that. There's no need to be ashamed that you don't like a song or album just because other do.
I think this is a solid 8. I don't even like this genre or Gambino (the rapper, actor he's fine) that much...but I fucking adore this album's production and thoughtfulness. Even California is infectious, the beat is so evocative of California it's insane...and the vocal delivery makes me laugh every time.
6.5
My Grandma Died 8.5
'California' is Childish Gambino's remastering of 'Put the lime in the coconut'. The sound design and constipated vocals are very similar.
You'd be surprised how few vocal effects are on this record, he did a lot of weird stuff with his voice that I think ended up working out. Really love this new direction he's taking, I would give it an 8 or a 9.
I kinda wanted him to hate the album just to read the comments.
The only Donald I fukks wit…
FAXXX
DankassBombass Donald Duck a trick ass nigga.

Not a Don Cheadle fan, huh?
Yay! Politics! When no one asked!
