Dagan .. you might find some more history about "Les Paul" on the epiphone mobile app .. 140 years of epiphone history there .. it mentions how the gold top came about (looks good alongside polished brass instruments in bands of the era) .. and the all black version (it was best suited for tuxedo) .. Les Paul actually prefered Epiphone to Gibson ..

    Finaly some thrue facts.
Back in the stoneages I was hangin in two musicshops that was mainly into vintage instruments. Most guitars where plain offwhite, black and red and those top notch ones where kind of semitransparent henna, red brownish.
I have often wondered where all these bursts with over the life super clear 3D intrigue patterned wood top guitars cames from?
Sure as hell those ones was not around back then guitars where expensive enough anyway and there was no need for Bling.
The world was black and white and in low resolution I have childhood memories from when we where so dam poluted that almost everything stod in a shade of gray.

It's funny I just watched a special on the history of the electric guitar and they claimed because they had the shaped maple top, they didn't want fender to know what wood they were using. Now this is what the documentary claims but it doesn't make much sense to me because fender could have just bought one and sanded it down so that didn't fly with me then I heard in the past because of the Les Paul and Mary Ford show, Les Paul thought they would show up on TV better because TV back in them days were black & white and picked up some colors better than others but your right we may never know but the reason for gold showing up on black & white TV's does make more sense to me because look at the Les Paul TV models you mentioned, there yellow and showed up on black and white TV's great. One more thing to consider is that didn't have to pick out great looking maple, any piece of maple worked because they were painted so it probably save them time and probably money not having to take the time picking out great choices of wood. Love your video and I have been playing Les Paul's since 1975. I also heard since telecasters were a plain looking utility guitars in Les Paul's mind he wanted to make the Les Paul very elegant looking. Lot of theories out there but we will probably never know because they all sound good minus the documentary that claimed they didn't want fender to know what kind of wood they were using, how ridiculous.

The first Burst Les Paul's made in 1958 didn't have flame tops, they had plain tops. That was the wood Gibson had in stock, because until the burst came along you never got to see the wood grain so there was no point in buying more expensive figured wood then. The only time there was any kind of figuring in woods was when figured wood got thrown in by mistake. If a figured wood was used on one side of the guitar normally the other side would be plain. There was no book matching then, it all came down to the luck of the draw and most of the time in 1958 the woods were plain. Now yes, in 1959 they did start to use figured woods and you will see flame top 59's. But typically, a 58 would have a plain top.

Yesterday while watching one of those shows with Les Paul and a current famous LP guitarist. Les said 1st that only the “SG shaped” guitars with 3 pickups had his name on them.
2nd He also said initially he didn’t like the guitar. But, said the only reason was the way the neck was attached to the body. And after they fixed that. He was fine with the guitar.
Are either of these two facts true? I’ve seen double pickup SG’s with Les Paul on the truss today cover recently on Reverb. Did Gibson put them on there? Les himself says they didn’t. Only the triple pickup custom had it.
I’ve heard the devil horn story for years. Had it been manufactured when they switched back to the single cut Paul? Did some PR marketing guy come up with the story? Les only said the way the neck was it wouldn’t stay in tuned. When they fixed the design he thought it was a good Guitar.

First released in 1954 was totally black because as Les Paul himself said: "Because you can see your hands move when you’re on the stage and it looks good with any outfit you wear." Also, Custom was a favorite in the '80s as a more mean looking guitar for hard rock and heavy metal than a sunburst.

Paul Bigsby also released a single-cut guitar in 1948 - FOUR YEARS before Gibson. But, don't tell the idiots in this comment section about it. They'll just ignore you. Too bad this video is chock full of lies. McCarty didn't invent the single cutaway Les Paul shape. O.W. Appleton and Paul Bigsby made guitars with those shapes in 1941 and 1948 respectively. Also, Seth Lover didn't invent the Humbucker. It had been invented years earlier. Gibson was just the first to get the patent. I have a 1960's Gibson LG-0. I've played/owned MANY Gibson Les Pauls over the decades. There's no magic in them and they're not special. I have non-Gibson Les Pauls now which blow away the Gibsons I've played in pure quality and playability.

So, it's not surprising that the lies are continuing. People don't want to hear the truth these days. They'd rather be lied to as they empty their wallets. Pretty sad.
