Father Mike Schmitz discusses the story of Martha and Mary. He addresses the common misconception that only one of these women of the Bible was doing God's will. Neither Martha nor Mary were doing anything wrong when Jesus came to visit the home of Martha in Luke 10:38-42. Martha was doing a very good thing as she made preparations during Jesus’ visit, but her sister Mary chose the better part because she chose the thing that we’re going to do for eternity in heaven, just spend time with Jesus. Father Mike uses the life of Blessed Mother Teresa as an example of someone who both served Jesus in the poor and adored him in the Blessed Sacrament everyday, essentially doing the part of both Martha and Mary. He goes on to discuss how there is a time to serve God and a time to just be with him.

I was a martha and always focused and distracted by earthly things, while I did pray, I didn't focus on him. Now I have learned to be Mary and I do believe that is the better place to be. While I did many things I felt "rushed" like Martha and so I'm happy to say I'm able to pray and not be rushed and sit with Jesus and pray and most importantly LISTEN. In listening and reading the word, I prioritize my life in accordance with His plan, not mine. I can be both and I have been both but I agree with Jesus, Mary is where it's at. I've shifted gears thanks to listening more and making more decisions with God.

I am a Mary person, mostly due to wanting to get to know my guests and as I’ve said in a previous comment I love to listen to other’s and have that interaction with another person. However I feel like I’m Martha inside my mind, I am going into a field that’s very education/academic based, I have to get my own life together, I have to be a successful adult and makes my parents (especially my dad) proud of me, I have to be someone who can have that philosophical conversation with God and Jesus one day (my granddad thinks it’ll be more of a debate), etc. there’s so much I need to accomplish to make this right and yet I neglect that relationship with the higher powers sometimes because of everything in my life.

I have been struggling with this passage for so long. Thank you for explaining it the way you did Fr. So what Jesus meant is, Mary is doing the better (also better because it's easier). I struggle through my day between serving and one to one time with God. I would rather do the latter, but the cooking and cleaning also NEEDS to get done. I try to offer it up to God (when I remember or struggle the worst), every small things as self reminder. Doing the harder part can also mean more humility.

Love this. So true. To those who think 'being a Mary is best', I think it's a matter of attitude. What's our motivation of heart? That's the part Jesus sees.

I have definitely related to Martha's behavior but when first reading the story, I realized that I wanted to be more like Mary. During parties, I tend to be doing busy work. I now know it is my way of hiding. What a great inspiration is Mary's desire to be with her very special guest. ❤

I feel like the whole Mary and Martha thing also demonstrates God’s stance on equality in the church. Martha was doing what was expected of a woman in her time (nothing wrong with that). But Mary, learning at the feet of Jesus, was doing what many women didn’t do: learning over performing “woman’s work”, and Jesus said that Mary made the better choice. I may be wrong but I think it’s a nice way to think about it.

Today an alternative perspective on the Martha and Mary story presented itself to me. I think Martha represents the banal, administrative and bureaucratic elements of life which at the end of the day are just necessary overhead. Alternatively, Mary represents the intellectual, creative and authentic elements of life that lead to growth and progress. I question whether it is really about works vs Faith. Before you do works you must learn and prepare yourself or it will all just be wasteful busywork. I think alot of people put too much emphasis on administration for administration's sake to the detriment of the heart of the matter.

Thank you so much. I really needed to hear this today. Service is such a big part of my life, I get so exhausted of not feeling like I’m enough when I am doing so much. And when I think of the Martha and Mary story I always feel confused because of the exact reasons you listed. I went on a walk tonight to think and said a prayer to ask for help with this issue. Your video was the first and only one I needed to watch. Thank you for such a genuine video and for sharing your peaceful knowledge. The story makes so much more sense to me, and brings me peace to know I wasn’t so far off the mark after all. Time to just keep on keeping on and don’t forget my daily “visit” to commune with God.

Thank you, Fr. Mike, for defending Martha. People focus on the story in Luke 10:38-42. They forget John 11:1-44, the raising of Lazarus, and Martha's confession of faith. Notice the beginning of John 11:5--"Jesus loved Martha." How many people in Scripture had it mentioned BY NAME that Jesus loves them? You can see by my name that I take this personally. I've been "Martha, Martha-ed" all my life, and it gets old after a while.

I think that Jesus was explaining that coming to him is the most important thing a person can do ... finding and having faith. Martha was undoubtedly a very good and caring person but she was preoccupied with doing works to please Jesus. Works have their place but it is by far more important to have a true love for, and faith in, Christ.

I’ve always felt like Mary, to be able to take a small moment to sit at a strangers side/feet and listen to them. Maybe it’s the storyteller/creative writing whiz in me, but the idea of listening to a person’s point of view. To me the stained glass window of Mary sitting next to Jesus was a more recognizable thing to me. I’ve always wanted to be an anthropologist, because of the simple idea of Mary sitting with Jesus and just listening. I’m not religious by any means, though I’ve been to church in my life and yet I’m always drawn back to that stained glass window. That portrait in time of Mary and Jesus sitting together is something I relate to.

Fr. Mike, I always felt the problem with Martha was she was a worrier, placing earthly concerns in front of just letting go and letting God as Mary did. Another analogy would be the seed that drops on I think it was the rocky soil. The seed starts to grow but because of the lack of debt in the soil, it dies. So in human terms, we hear the WORD, but then get overrun with concerns and forget. This I see as a major problem with my Roman Catholic sisters and brothers who do not read the WORD daily. Their soil is thin, relying only on what a priest says during Mass. How can one REALLY KNOW Jesus if you only go to Mass and do not KNOW HIS WORDS? But hey, what do I know:)

Thank you Father Mike! Your teachings have really been speaking to me lately. Deep down I would love to be Martha but I relate to Mary more I believe.
I was sexually abused as a Child by a family member that was highly respected in our Catholic Church. I stopped going to church but I still believed in God but I lacked faith.
About 8 years ago I was sexually assaulted (raped) by an unknown man. The experience was traumatizing. I didn’t tell anyone which was probably the worst thing I could do for myself. I felt lost and very lonely. I became an alcoholic trying to drink the pain away.
Last year I reached my breaking point. I was crying in the shower feeling angry asking all these questions of why did this happen to me. As if God was ignoring me.
    This is the best part….
Jesus came to me and said “How can I help you if you don’t talk to me.” I was in complete shock. I dropped to my knees begging God for forgiveness. “I am so sorry father, my beloved father.” I have never felt so ashamed before. It’s very hard to explain. A different kind of shame. As if God wasn’t the Almighty beloved saviour and King. As if I doubted his power which was not the case but that’s the shame I felt.
Ever since that day I haven’t felt the need to drink. I stopped cold Turkey. Now I walk with Jesus every single minute of everyday. I have a difficult time putting my Bible down lol. I want to know Jesus deeply. I want to worship him and one day if I would ever be worthy to wash his feet. He is just so amazing!
Thank you for allowing me to share my story. Sending so much love and blessing to everyone 🙌💗

You should do a video on whether Christians should play video games or not. This is usually a very common question among teens. Should we just avoid extremely violent games like GTA or all video games in general? I play a few more violent video games like Skyrim which is a medieval fantasy game with dragons, magic, knights, etc. In an "open world" game like that I have the freedom to choose whether to be a good, noble warrior who gives money to the poor, helps the citizens of the kingdom, and eliminates danger like dragons and trolls and bandits. I also have the choice to become a "bad" character in the game like joining a group of thieves and stealing for a living or becoming an assassin. Is it ok to play video games like these in which I have to freedom to choose to play as a good character? Should I just avoid video games that are extremely violent and still play the fantasy game Skyrim that I was mentioning? Or should I not play video games at all? I know that we should always look to glorify and worship God in everything we do and I know that playing video games isn't exactly worshipping God but all humans do need a little time in their day for relaxation and entertainment. What is your opinion on this matter. I love God and I always want to get closer to Him but does this mean that I have to give up video games? My primary goal is always to get closer to God. Let me know what you think and perhaps if you have time please make a video on this because I think it would answer a lot of teens questions. Thanks.
    In Mary, Our Mother.

I was actually thinking the same thing recently, and I really hope Father Mike makes a video about this! I, too, love God with my life and to me He goes first in everything, but I also enjoy playing videogames such as Skyrim and Zelda, and I've always wondered if it's "bad". I'd say that if they really do lead us away from God, then we should stop playing them. If not, then I don't think it should be a problem. Maybe if we play those games, we should just try to avoid missions that require assasination, theft, or other things God would dislike.

two really good questions to ask are, would you be playing this video game if God were in the room? and, by playing this game, will you grow closer to God? if the answer is no, just don't play it. if there are certain qualities in the game that show you something of Christ, then I'd say it's probably fine.

    • @eliasfrp
      @eliasfrp Před 6 lety

      Maria Stephens
I don't think it's a very good "test", the one you posted. You wouldn't probably do a lot of normal stuff if God was in the room (like using the toilet). And some stuff we do might not make us come closer to God. Like watching a science fiction, comedy or action movie doesn't get us directly closer to God.
But, actually, if we continue with this example of the movies, if we watch them asking God to be with us, in His Will, to watch with us, I think it can make us come closer to Him, just like when you do things like that with a friend.
I hope you understood my English well.

I’m sure you’re gonna hear this a lot from women who were the first born in a family and during the 50s and 60s in what were large Catholic families. Most firstborn Catholic daughters. I have no problem on going out on a limb here and saying where Martha’s. Some by choice Some not so much. I am the oldest of five by the time I was seven I wash dishes swept floors on the weekends. The bathroom had to be cleaned. There was a chart up on the linen closet so that you knew which bedrooms needed fresh linens as I got older, I was the babysitter, my school schedule was adapted so that I could be home in time for a brother that had a little bit of a problem in school so getting him through the whole day was kind of a chore. But things have considerably changed when I got divorced, I came home to my hometown. I wanted to be here. That’s where my parents lived, well my dad didn’t last as long as I hope he would and my mom made a decision to move out to the West Coast to be by my other sister, who is five years younger than me. Lisa, unfortunately, as things turned out for Lisa, mom went blind, and for the last 10 years the last seven of them as moms eyesight slowly disappeared she and her husband thank God. Her husband is a wonderful man who worships the ground. My sister walks on and would do anything for her. The two of them together have taken over every bit of Mom‘s care with the exception of two months in the last seven years. Yes I’m older and I did the hard stuff on the way up, but I would
Gladly do it all over again, then have the handful that my sister has right now. I pray for her every day and her husband for patience and love and kindness that they have in what seems like endless amounts to deal with an older person mom‘s 86 today Who has lost their site late in life. I can honestly admit I cannot do it I tried I couldn’t do it I could do it, but I couldn’t do it. Well, I thank God every day that among all of my brothers, the good Lord, put a sister in there for me, we weren’t close growing up and even as young adults but age and time is a great equalizer and we are closer than we ever were.. and I thank every day that she’s there.

The phrase used in the passage is, "sitting at his feet." That's how they said someone was a student of a particular teacher. Women were discouraged from "sitting at the feet of a teacher," i.e. being students, so Martha's question to Jesus was at least partly, "Aren't you going to redirect her to woman's proper role?" And Jesus said, "No." But as St. Augustine pointed out, there are layers upon layers of understanding in Scripture. A single line contains much truth, so we can focus on how Jesus encouraged women to study the path to salvation as well as focusing on what Fr. Mike explains here, or any of a number of other teachings that apply equally.

    0. He is not allowed to have children for the sake and the glory that he desires for the Father.
    0. The relations between a Celestial husband and wife are set forth and explained.
    0. A man will have only one eternal mate. Mary Magdalene is the eternal mate of Jesus and will be at his side at the Second Coming.
AND now it was the purpose of those who organized the canon of scripture that gave an account of the life of Jesus in the record of the Jews to not include the account of the marriage of the Lord to Martha, who was the daughter of Amasiah, and the sister of Mary and also of Lazarus, who was a childhood friend of Jesus.
2 For behold, Lazarus had known Jesus most of his life; and they had played together in many instances as children when their fathers were engaged in the course of their businesses.
3 But this Lazarus and his family moved away from Nazareth and settled closer unto Jerusalem in the town of Bethany. And when Jesus was of the age of maturity according to their customs, even that he was no longer subjected to the will and dominion of his parents, he left Nazareth and went unto Bethany and found Lazarus and dwelt there for sometime while he prepared for the day of his ministry.
4 And while in the house of Amasiah, Jesus preached the gospel unto them of the whole house, and they were converted unto the gospel of which he spoke, which gospel he had received of the Father.
5 And Amasiah loved Jesus as his own son, and also as his Lord, having been given a witness of him by the Spirit as he listened to the gospel of the Father that was taught unto him by Jesus.
6 And Amasiah desired that Jesus take his eldest daughter, Martha, as his wife, that he might have companionship during the days of his ministry.
7 Now, this was the custom of the Jews, even that the father might have some direct involvement in choosing a husband for his daughters.
8 But Jesus had taught unto them the will of the Father concerning the marriage of a man and a woman and said unto Amasiah: Behold, it is not given unto me to choose that woman who would be my wife, but she must choose me for herself. And the law of Moses hath been fulfilled in me, even in this thing which thou desirest of me.
9 But thy daughter is of an age and of a sound mind that she might choose for herself the man with whom she shall covenant as her husband. And if she chooseth me of her own free will and choice, then I will be her husband according to the commandments of the Father.
10 For the Father doth not respect a man over a woman, and hath given unto each woman the right to choose for herself her own husband. But this I have been commanded to tell unto thee from the Father, even that if thy daughter chooseth me to be her husband, then she shall have no children from the union.
11 For the Father hath commanded me that I shall not leave a posterity in the flesh. For if I were to leave a son or a daughter in the flesh, then the glory of that son or daughter would one day overshadow the glory of the Father, which glory is meant to be given with an eye single to His glory and not to any person in the flesh.
12 And if it is the will of thy daughter that she be my wife, then she shall be barren all the days of her life and shall have no child with me, but shall be my companion during the time of my life, which shall not be many years.
13 But if she is righteous and doeth that which is required of her by the Father, then she shall be with me forever in the kingdom of the Father where we shall one day experience the joy of eternal children, even as the Father doth experience the joy of His own.
14 And it came to pass that Martha chose Jesus to be her husband according to that which she had been taught by him.
15 Now, this thing was hard for Martha to do because of the traditions and the customs of the Jews, which were taught unto her all the days of her life. But she had also been converted by the Lord and given the Holy Ghost that convinced her that Jesus was the Savior of the world, and the Son of the Eternal Father who had been sent to save the world from its sins by teaching the people the will of the Father.
16 And because she had received this witness of him, she knew that she could not have a child by him, according to his words. And Martha reasoned in herself for some time. And she knew that the opportunity to be at the side of Jesus for as long as he was among the people in the flesh would be a blessing enough for her. And she wanted that Jesus be her husband, and went unto him and requested of him this thing.
17 And because of the Jews and their customs and traditions, Jesus suffered that Martha marry him according to this manner. And it was this wedding of which is briefly spoken of in the record of the Bible which ye already have before you.
18 For it was customary that the family of the groom provide the wine and the food for those who were in attendance at the wedding. And Mary, the mother of Jesus, did not think that Jesus would submit himself to the traditions and customs of the Jews, therefore, she did not prepare the wedding on her part according to these customs.
19 And when the hour of the wedding arrived, Jesus was made aware that there had been no wine brought by his mother according to the tradition. And he smiled upon his mother and said unto her: Behold, for my wife I do these things and have submitted to these things for her enjoyment and the enjoyment of those of her family.

Do you know how stupid I sometimes think the English Department at Lehigh University must have been. St. Martha had All But Dissertation in English, and they would not hire her because she did not have PhD. BILINGUAL EDUCATION Went YEARS OF MY LIFE AND HERS AND WOULD NOT HIRE HER BECAUSE SHE WAS CLAIMING TO BE pORTUGUESE OR ME BECAUSE iM JUST AN iTALIAN WHO NEVER KNEW ANYTHING. First OF ALL, THE SURNAme is quite histolrical with sardigna , Italy , France, Canada, and Spain just shows the stupidity these Civil Rights groups teach.EWTN displayed theirs too claimiung After they stole some of my poms in Spanish in 1990 they knew the reason of Ruben Dariops influence in literature on them. Corrupt they were to do that and they had to be in court.

True. But Jesus never claimed that he was God. He always made a clear distinction that he represented the Father. Jesus and God are not the same, the church keeps perpetuating this lie to initially accommodate pagan beliefs of Sun worship. Speak the truth. All glory goes to the Father

      Before Abraham, I am.
The disciples understood exactly what that meant. No ambiguity.

KA Fleury No ambiguity, great. Then John The Baptist was greater than Jesus as Jesus stated.

Caine Able There's no ambiguity there, either, but I was referring specifically to your claim that Jesus didn't say He's God. "Before Abraham, I AM."

KA Fleury Good, then Jesus is not God since John the Baptist is greater than him.

The RCC is obsessed with Women in the Bible. Why? It is because The RCC is all about goddess worship. They are determined to hang the Title of the Pagan goddess Astarte, "Queen of Heaven", on the Mother of Christ. Jeremiah 7:18 and 44: 17-19 and 44:25. You have been deceived. I urge you to repent of this and call on God to forgive you in Jesus Name , and worship Jesus alone to the Glory of His Father in Heaven.
