  • In the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, a powerful armed group controls lucrative gold mines. DW’s Mariel Mueller is the first international journalist who got access. She speaks with miners who are forced to pay 'tax' to the Mai-Mai Yakutumba militia and with survivors of its brutal attacks.

From Lubumbashi and Kolwezi to North Kivu and Katanga, the DR Congo is plundered, while Kisangani as a central Africa hub port and the commercial potential of the Congo River remain suppressed and underdeveloped! So much for the "sustainable development of the Last Continent" and uplifting the "bottom billion".

This is true for most stuff if we trace the whole supply chain. The reality is things we consume, own and use don't simply get created by clicking in front of a computer. The vast majority are either mined or grown and processed afterward. The west has developed better practices, but have ironically opted not to be involved in these activities and get things from less regulated places.

I think DRC's main problem is mining cobalt. It possesses 80% of the world's cobalt reserves. And to top it up, that the cobalt mining process is very toxic.

The objects you buy cannot tell you where they are from. Slick salesmen and well-forged paperwork make criminal objects seem legitimate. These problems can really only be fixed by the people on the ground.....kill those who steal from you and break the backs of those who would turn you into slaves.

Lol...6:30-6:40, the guy digging in the gold mine, the guy pulling up the bucket, and the 15 guys standing around watching. Seems about normal....in "the West" those guys just have 15 different titles, offices, and it is harder to tell that they do no work and steal your productivity.

Blood cobalt, blood lithium, blood palm oil, blood acacia wood.....
You really could say this about anything. The problem is the government not standing up and protecting their people from this exploitation.
Gold mines exist all over the world. If done properly, the mines provide a large source of employment and stability for the community. Not all mining operations are the same...but operations like this, make those who treat and pay workers fairly difficult to operate. Especially with the derivative market manipulation, resulting in the artificially low price. The good mining operations are seeing their input costs increase with inflation, but wall street bankers are tinkering with the price of their end product...making legitimate mining operations almost impossible to get above water.
