- In the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, a powerful armed group controls lucrative gold mines. DW’s Mariel Mueller is the first international journalist who got access. She speaks with miners who are forced to pay 'tax' to the Mai-Mai Yakutumba militia and with survivors of its brutal attacks.

Don't put the blame on rebels there are international corporations behind this mess
It’s a choice those rebels are supposed to be the revolutionaries for the people they are slaughtering…they are COWARDS like nearly all African men.
…I wonder how you can be paid to punish your own people
Have to show this to my girlfriend. No gifts for her.
It reminds me of Blood Diamonds
From Lubumbashi and Kolwezi to North Kivu and Katanga, the DR Congo is plundered, while Kisangani as a central Africa hub port and the commercial potential of the Congo River remain suppressed and underdeveloped! So much for the "sustainable development of the Last Continent" and uplifting the "bottom billion".
Still using preindustrial mining methods, what a waste of time and energy and manpower.
life is cheaper than equipment there.
How horrific. Saddened by this sick govt of congo!
This is true for most stuff if we trace the whole supply chain. The reality is things we consume, own and use don't simply get created by clicking in front of a computer. The vast majority are either mined or grown and processed afterward. The west has developed better practices, but have ironically opted not to be involved in these activities and get things from less regulated places.
The brutal reality of almost everything.
I think DRC's main problem is mining cobalt. It possesses 80% of the world's cobalt reserves. And to top it up, that the cobalt mining process is very toxic.
Thats how all Apple product made
The objects you buy cannot tell you where they are from. Slick salesmen and well-forged paperwork make criminal objects seem legitimate. These problems can really only be fixed by the people on the ground.....kill those who steal from you and break the backs of those who would turn you into slaves.
Lol...6:30-6:40, the guy digging in the gold mine, the guy pulling up the bucket, and the 15 guys standing around watching. Seems about normal....in "the West" those guys just have 15 different titles, offices, and it is harder to tell that they do no work and steal your productivity.
what is there to laugh about?
Blame it on the local governments not having any standards. So much corruption.
No ! Blame it on the west for making sure the Congolese continue to fight so they could continue to exploit them.
True, however international governments suppress the local governments of Africa at any instance of a inch of positive economic financially progress
He gave a clue at the end where the gold goes...
blood gold, blood diamonds, blood oil, etc etc etc
Blood cobalt, blood lithium, blood palm oil, blood acacia wood.....
You really could say this about anything. The problem is the government not standing up and protecting their people from this exploitation.
Gold mines exist all over the world. If done properly, the mines provide a large source of employment and stability for the community. Not all mining operations are the same...but operations like this, make those who treat and pay workers fairly difficult to operate. Especially with the derivative market manipulation, resulting in the artificially low price. The good mining operations are seeing their input costs increase with inflation, but wall street bankers are tinkering with the price of their end product...making legitimate mining operations almost impossible to get above water.

Can’t mention Dubai when talking about blood stained gold, you’ll get cut immediately.
How can the un sit by and allow this to happen? How can the rest of Africa allow this to happen?
Crabs In a bucket damn
*DRC🇨🇩 have border disputes with Republic of Congo.*
Is the African Union concerned with this? Or are we outsiders more worried than they are?
It's just a useless organization a tool for Europeans to loot
Group or groups??
Donate to this cause guys so the donations can go to the hands of people causing it,they’ve been doing this for years they won’t ever stop.
Sounds like Indian Movie *KGF* but in real life
🥵🥵😱😱😱😱😱😱😱
Solomon they found your mine
I'm also a gold prospector, but I look for the gold in mining dumps, that's what I do every day in my country
So the conclusion is Europe and USA both sell their weapons in exchange of gold . Prosperity in North America and Europe depends upon misery of other countries be it in Africa , Asia or South America .
Pretty much the same for any country trying to achieve the same. Had the goverments of these places not be so corrupt and greedy they could stop this
Other conclusion is that African people should stop the terror and violence towards other african people? African people should stop trading gold for weapons. Gold should be used for the benefit of the whole country.
@New Moon Do you seriously belive that those in the global north do not massively benefit of the chaos and rampant exploitation in nations such as the DRC
first they tell me not to buy diamonds, now i can't buy gold, what am i supposed to do with my money now?
You could buy things that are actually useful, rather than emulating birds and racoons and going after shiny things?
@@kylesmith8128 no in the west they get them to invest in gold and diamonds
This is the reality of precious metals and stones greedy and corrupt official do bad things to get there shares.
Ah the high tech industrial country Africa could have been if there werent so much infighting
Congo is rich country
I remember crises in the Congo from when I was a child, a teenager, a soldier, at mid- life, and old age and what I have learned is that nothing can be done by outsiders except to keep it going another 75 years, like in many other places, I think we should maybe leave them alone in Africa to figure it out.
the thing is, they keep doing this because international companies from the global north keep feeding on it and we all live based on the extraction.
😢
In Congo everything is blood stained
Employees in mines of Africa must be given 500 dollar per month + life insurance + medical insurance + conveyance Bus+ home 1000 sq ft.+ home furnishings
And? That's NOTHING.
Like it's something new!!!
This is happening for years.
...and it happens all over the world, with all different types of natural resources. The things like cobalt and lithium that are used to produce solar panels and electric vehicles are exceptionally dangerous to mine. They're in the Congo...why not showcase the cobalt mines?
It looks like some kind of yellow fruit looks tasty! yum!
Is this different than the brutal reality of Congo's cobalt mining industry? Most of the world's cobalt comes from Congo, which is used to make electric car batteries. Everyone loves electric cars ... just don't mention the slave labor or where the contents come from.
Don't mention how the price of the cobalt rockets once it leaves the continent.
Sometimes look at the clothes and jewelry we wear and reflect. Africa, China and south eastern asian countries have 0 respect for these poor workers, human rights are just words to to the United Nations.
@sourav jaiswal l agree, right on.
Thats so sad why kill your own people i thought Africa is not what i thought it was ita unsafe
They scamp the poor people
Usir penjajah Eropa dari tanah Afrika … sudah tidak zaman nya kolonial
Europe will keep buying them and support israel n then talk about human rights to brown people
That's why Africa is hopping off UN train and siding with China
Good, isreal should be supported, not terrorists.
so what is your suggestion?
Should we invade them and make sure everyone is treated fairly?
@@willvandermeer4733 amazing mindset, yet the likes of you will cry n call those who conqured others in the past as evil.
@@mugin11223344 be fair and apply the same political preasure and sanctions your side does to other countries, well thats too much to ask i guess.
The west is not morally superior, virtuous or benevolent, they do everything in their own interests while they call out eastern countries for doing the same.
African stand onw United built company proct in Africa creates jobs for African
Congo used to be german xolony right?
No, Congo once belong to Africans, now it doesn't. Nothing else matters after that.
Congo was a Belgian colony.
