Why is Not Touching Your Face So Hard?

  • The CDC is giving out a multitude of rules for people to follow to stop the spread of Covid-19, but one of those rules is just so hard to stop. Not touching your face seems like an easy task, but why is this habit so dang hard to break and why is it a big deal if we do touch our face?

2:47 Why? I'm at home, nobody else lives here and I washed my hands just minutes ago; I'll touch my face as much as I want to :)
... but seriously, this is really hard to follow. When I'm outside, the wind blows my hair into my face, the pollen trigger my hay fever, and my beard doesn't help either. I often touch my face, fully aware that I shouldn't.

This is 100% truth! Just ask any one of "the few and the proud" about touching your face on Paris Island (and MCRD). Everyone gets caught at least once. Especially when there's sand fleas exploring the inside of your nose. It's mentally excruciating to remain completely still. Reason being that in combat situations itching your nose could mean your life or worse the life of a fellow Marine. Semper Fi!

I feel like I was conditioned to touch my face when I was younger and had bad acne I was really self conscious about and so would touch my face to cover it, and make it worse, and even though it’s mostly gone now I did that for so long I just don’t even think about it anymore. Okay I also struggle really hard with OCD and one of the initial hardest things for me was my hair. For the longest time I absolutely HAD to have it be 100% perfect! As you can imagine this lead to a lot of touching of the face and hair aswell as being really sensitive to when hair touched my face or the back of my neck. Having to cope with forcing myself not to touch my hair so much for the sake of my health, all be it a different kind of healths sake than today, here are some tips for those with a bit longer of hair. Pulling your hair back or up is generally a really good option for keeping it out of your face and not touching it. Use a little hairspray to keep shorter pieces from getting in your face, and if you have finer straighter hair pro tip- get a rat tail or really fine tooth comb and quickly spray hairspray on the side going towards your hair and quickly bring it through your hair to keep the short pieces down without making it really look of feel like you have hairspray in. On a similar note, anti-frizz products are always your friend!! Now if you’re still having a problem with just how your hair looks, replace your mirrors with words of confidence wherever possible and only put it up in buns, pony tails, or if you have a bit more self control make sure whatever styling you do keeps it behind your shoulders so as not to see it unless looking into a mirror you don’t have so read the words of confidence and just know it’s perfect instead.

being aware of touching your face most likely will help a lot. it might help for some like me to brainstorm how and when the next time they can touch their face because the urge can be unstoppable. I would suggest keeping track of what you touched since you last washed your hands before you touch your face.

Isn't it like good for your immune system to touch your face and get in contcact with all sorts of microbes as exposure to these microbes is an essential part of being human?
Most of our immune system is comprised of tissue that requires activation by the microbes we’re exposed to. The immune system requires the presence of friendly bacteria to regulate its functions. The vast majority of microbes, 97% to 99%, are benign or beneficial, and they are the best protection to fight pathogenic microorganisms. So behaviours like scratching your face probably also have an evolutionary advantage.
In these times it's obviously good to be extra hygienic, but we really shouldn't all become germaphobes.

I wonder, also, if the large number of nerves and high sensitivity of the skin around our eyes, mouth and nose doesn't mean we're more easily triggered by wind, temperature, moisture and microscopic particles to touch our faces? As in, this high density of nerves is stimulated more frequently, and thus we want to brush away the resulting sensation more often on our face than, say, our leg.

Not sure I buy this reasoning. This video is saying that touching your face is a developed habit from learned activities like putting on makeup and styling your hair but if that is true we would see markedly less face touching in children and infants because they wouldn't have developed these habit's yet. They also compare the impulse to scratching and itch because relieving the itch gives you a positive feedback loop in your brain, but what is giving your brain a positive feedback for touching your face that would reinforce the desire to touch it more? They didn't present a stimulus for this outcome. The fact that it is so widely prevalent in the near entirety of the human populace would suggest the action would provide some sort of benefit or at the very lease not be detrimental to any noticeable degree. I would say it is more likely people touch there face to remove irritants that are approaching their mucus membranes like rubbing your eyes when you wake up or cry, wiping your nose when you sneeze, or removing dust or dirt from your face. Also it's hard to get around the fact that our face is where our mouth is and you know.... everyone spends a lot of time sticking stuff in there if they expect to live very long. While taking precautions like hand washing is important we need to be careful we don't become too germiphobic because your body needs to have minor scuffles with pathogens in order to keep your immune system healthy and ready to deal with big threats. I mean this is basically how vaccines work but our body does it all the time automatically. If we just cut ourselves off from everything we are going to end up with weak ass immune systems that won't be able to handle even small infections. And you are eventually going to come in contact with some sort of bug no matter how hard you try not to so you need to keep your body in good shape to fend it off.
