    Troy, you are the best guitar instructor out there period. I have all of your books and am constantly referring back to them. What sets you apart is that your examples sound so cool to play, so we learn theory and great sounding riffs/songs at the same time! Please, please, please, post a master class on your solos from your Metal Rhythm series, especially Tales From the Crypt and The Tao of Metal. Those solos are AMAZING! Thanks for all of your hard work.

    Hi Troy,
    Back in the time when I used to live in Iran I had a shred black and white copy of your books which I had obtained the copies through a very talented Metal player who was friend of min. As a beginner I used to hardly read and comprehend the heavy metal chords pattern with out the CD and play them with out listening. That was the beginning for me to learn a bit about how heavy metal power chords are played. When i came to Australia I still had your name in my mind and I went to a music shop in Melbourne and bought a cheap electric guitar and ordered two series of heavy metal rhythm guitar and lead by Troy Stetina. It was then i could here the pattern on CD as well and was getting so excited of hearing them and playing along. For some unknown reason my books and guitar were stolen from me and I stopped playing guitar for 10 years as I thought thats not for me anymore even though I still loved to listen to metal songs. after so many years it was about two months ago that I decided to purchase new flying V heavy metal electric guitar to pursue this passion again. After receiving my beautiful guitar first thing I did I typed in your name on you tube and started looking at the way you teach. It was nice, simple and very understanding. The first thing I searched was the riff of song "All things repulsive" which I loved to play. I am very happy to see you here and although I never had the honour of meeting you personally, I always know you as my first master and teacher in learning, playing and enjoying the pattern and riffs of heavy metal. It is also interesting to see that some of Iranian here thanked you as well and I can tell that by their name and sure name. My generation in Iran love heavy Metal.
    Thank you Troy

    Love this. Just nice to see a full video lesson by you, Troy. Metal Rhythm/Lead series as a package is honestly one of the best materials I’ve ever utilized. I also love Fretboard Mastery, but I find that one a lot more difficult to crack and daunting to tackle, but it’s still a very exciting book for me.
    I’m currently on chapter 8, Rhythm 2. I’m on Chapter 2, Lead 1, still working on the speed exercises and 16th note variations. I’ve been on that chapter much longer than I care to admit because I find it challenging and I’m constantly distracted by other blues books I’m working on and just playing and fiddling on the guitar. Soon I will blow past it all the way to chapter 3!!

    I just ordered both the Metal Rhythm Guitar Vol 1 & Metal Lead Guitar Primer and I'm looking forward to their arrival. I'm not a "beginner", however. It's hard to say where I fit. I can play "slow" blues leads, but when it comes to anything involving speed I can't pull it off. I'm hoping these books will push me to the next level, whatever that level is. I suppose I'm at the beginning stages of "intermediate". For some reason I have a difficult time doing descending pull-off runs (moving from string to string). I have owned your speed mechanics book for several years, and that was way above my ability. I do enjoy your teaching materials a lot. Keep them coming !!

  • @KingGrio
    @KingGrio Před 4 lety +2

    It's funny. That long talk about "the pulse" in the middle I'm only starting to realize it's importance.
    For as long as I can remember, I can count time and anticipate the next notes of songs in my head well, and I thought it was good enough. And I'd look at a video like that and say "Man, stop the philosophical talk, get to the licks !".
    But I played like crap and I'd be sad I can never play the rythmns or melodies in my mind.
    Now I still play guitar at a humble level, but as soon as I force myself to tap my foot when I play and also slightly get my upper body involved in really feeling the pulse, lowering my head on the downbeats, I feel like finally my body is in sync with what's in my head, and *then* I start to hit things in rythmn. And it applies for everything: melodies, faster runs etc. It also forces me to develop consistent techniques: wrist angle, pick grip, and things like this as if I was rehearsing dance moves.
    All that frustration and experience showed me that you may have a sharp mind and ideas in your head connect fast, if you don't get in tune with your body, all these ideas you have will remain in your head. And that playing the guitar relates to dancing, more so than I had imagined.

    • @TroyStetinaMusic
      @TroyStetinaMusic  Před 3 lety

      YES!!! And that is the thing that holds back intermediate players more than anything else. They don't understand the real skills needed, so they keep barking up the wrong tree, looking for 'success' in all the wrong places. Glad to hear you're getting it!

    Started Lead Primer and Rythm Vol 1 four months ago. As a complete begginer, these books are deceptively thin on pages but I can see a year of hard work in each. I do about 45 min a day out of each plus another 20 to 30 min out of the Rock Rythm DVD and to really get everything under my fingers is gonna take some time. I've been on the metal riffs exercises for almost a month and they are stll not " buttery smooth" yet. My hope is that after fully digesting each volume I can build some sort of momentum going into Lead 1 and Rythm 2.

    • @beaglegod1
      @beaglegod1 Před 7 lety

      I would have never thought to approach things that way. I've been trying to sound as close as possible to the CD even recording myself to listen to where I'm at. Even then not moving on until things feel light and easy. This will actually take a bit of courage, to approach things differently than what I've gotten used to. Having trained with weights the past 4+ years, you don't add to the bar until you've mastered the weight your using if anything you may have to drop weight to build some momentum, one step back to move two steps forward.So I'm still coming to grips with the learning process of guitar, thanks so much for the advice. Thank you a million times for the method you've put together. I mean to have an actual road map up the mountain, man that is priceless. I know that specificity of training can make all the difference and that's what you've provided for us. " If this is the style of music you want to play this is what you need to work on, and in this order." My only regret is not having started when I was young but I guess your ready to buckle down and do the work when your ready.

    Thank You Troy for what You are doing. My electric guitar path started from your books. I remember when in my teens, I got a copy of "thrash&speed" and instantly, all Metallica staff transormed from "oh my god! I never be able to play that" into "now I get what they are doing, but I need a sh*tload of practice". I also remember that "megadirt" and some other tracks took instant place in my playlist. Unfortunately I stopped playing for a couple of years, but now, as I had my hands on my old trusty dinky, I also got back to your exercises.
    The only thing that I miss in your method, is maybe some additional material for bass players. My bass player got some educational material on some complex bass techniques (like two handed tapping) that are maybe good for bass soloing, but he lacks some simple rythmic knowledge on how to arrange his bass lines to work in conjunction with rythm guitar and drums. Is there any chance of "thrash&speed bass guitar" ?

      Troy Stetina Well its been a few weeks and I've been applying these suggestions on open chords, and I'm seeing gradual and steady improvement. Thanks so much for the help Troy.
      You know I really think your getting the hang of all this guitar stuff. :)

    Hello Troy. I purchased your Speed Metal book in the 80s. It came with a cassette but it no longer works. Is there a way to replace it with a CD without having to repurchase the book. I'm 52 years this month and just bought a guitar and pulled your book back out. Thanks

    Would love any suggestions from anyone who has successfully gotten Rock and Roller down from Metal Rythm Vol 1. I've just started it and with my relatively small hands it is such a stretch from the 5th to 10th fret. I can barely get my pinky over the 9th.

    • @beaglegod1
      @beaglegod1 Před 7 lety

      well I'm still working on this one month later, it's a lot better but still can't quite keep up with the backing track. This stuff will really teach you patience especially when you have smaller hands that need to really stretch.

      Troy Stetina Will definitely do this. Thanks for the help. I know this is the second time you've told me not to spend too long on a group of exercises, but to come back and tighten things up later. I get a little obsessive compulsive and than stubbornly dig in my heels. :)

    Hello Troy,
    Can you mention the link where I can purchase
    your lessons? I prefer
    softcopy (downloadable)
    than hardcopy (CD or DVD)
    because I am living in
    the country where is not
    easy to get the Hardcopy.
    Thanks for this video also.

    • @Snowy0123
      @Snowy0123 Před 9 lety

      yes,when im descending on a single string dropping 1 position at a time its slower and also it feels sloppy even though im starting slow .however when im descending from high e to low e same position it's much smoother .ive tried analyzing my problem and i can't get my head around it..ther got to be some mental disconnect when im descending ..btw,thanks for your time .you didn't have to help but you did and it's greatly appreciated ..thanks

    Starting this book with a little experience, specifically with 3 string power chords. Is it okay to use 3 string power chords when playing this song or is it worth going out of my comfort zone using 2 strings?

    • @TroyStetinaMusic
      @TroyStetinaMusic  Před 2 lety +1

      3 string and 2 string power chords are basically interchangeable. Ideally you want to be able to play either way

    Troy what advice do you have for learning technically advanced songs by Iron Maiden? I can play basic metal rock riffs but Iron Maiden kicks my butt. Even Metallica is easier.

    • @GuitarsAndSynths
      @GuitarsAndSynths Před 6 lety

      Many thanks Troy for the quick reply! I have your first metal lead/rhythm guitar books and will focus on that as I have the power chord stuff down. I will start at slower temp 60-100bpm and work up to the Maiden fast tempos. Learning this stuff makes me realize how SUPER talented these guys are.

  • @bobosessbushcraftandsurviv4783

    Just got metal rythm guitar vol 1. and I'm getting metal lead guitar vol 1. Do they correspond with each other or no? I'm wondering if the leads in lead guitar Vol 1. are the leads from metal rythm guitar vol 1.? Thanks

    • @TroyStetinaMusic
      @TroyStetinaMusic  Před 3 lety

      Sorry I missed this comment before... MRG and MLG are separate methods but they do join at the end and cover the rhythm and lead parts of the same, final song. No, the leads I dropped on the MRG songs where just there to add something to the arrangements and make it more interesting to play. In MLG, those solos are all specifically arranged to build technique step by step.
