Volkswagen 1.6TDI Engine Injector Failure!

  • Volkswagen 1.6TDI and 1.9TDI engines are known to sometimes have faulty injectors that can be a costly fix! In this video I will tell you how to identify which injectors you have and how to save money on costly repair bills!
The 3L130277B injector type has gained notoriety due to a known issue with its piezoelectric actuator - the small capsule located on top where the electrical connector is situated. This tiny yet critical component can spell trouble for Volkswagen owners, causing performance issues and potential headaches.
    The Problem: Piezoelectric Actuator Troubles
The stack of piezoelectric crystals within the actuator tends to crack or break over time. This degradation leads to a significant drop in electrical resistance, plummeting from the standard 180-210 kiloohms to a mere 5 kohms or less. An open circuit is also a clear indicator of actuator failure. While electrical resistance isn't the primary function of the actuator, measuring it becomes a reliable method to determine if the crystal stack is mechanically compromised.
Why It Matters: Performance and Costly Repairs
A malfunctioning piezoelectric actuator can result in a cascade of issues, including rough idling, misfires, and decreased fuel efficiency. Ignoring these symptoms may lead to more severe engine problems over time.
Moreover, the cost of injector repairs can be a significant burden on your wallet. But fear not, as we're here to guide you on identifying these problematic injectors and how to potentially save money on those looming repair bills.
Using high quality fuel can reduce the likelihood of deposits accumulating in the injectors, promoting better engine performance.

2012 1.6 TDI 215000 miles no issues with injectors I always use injector cleaner two treatments once a year, always change all of your filters and quality oil, people usually don't maintain their cars properly

That's insane! Thanks for the tips! I couldn't agree more! So many people don't bother to get cars serviced regularly.

Servicing your van is a good thing, but will have no impact on when or if the injector will fail. Also injector cleaner will not prevent it either. The point of failure is the electrical switch part on top of the unit, not the main body of the injector. Hope this helps.

Hello. Mine is a 2012 Seat Leon with the CAYC engine and 113K with part service history. It developed a misfire last summer but it was intermittent. Sometimes it didn't misfire from cold up to normal running temp. Sometimes it would only misfire at cold idle. It always seems to run fine above idle, say 1500rpm and cruises on the motorway fine and performance is unaffected although 50mpg at best on a run and 38mpg locally which seems low. It was tested by an injection specialist last summer who found injector 3 was delivering more fuel than it should and injector 2 was compensating with slightly less. I have just today checked the resistance and all four are 202kOhm which I didn't expect. There are no related fault codes. The exhaust smells of diesel and is damp with diesel around the exit. It recently developed a loud ticking which sounds like a dud hydraulic tappet only on one cylinder - I've changed the oil just in case but the oil seemed fine and doesn't smell of diesel and the level has not changed since I changed it 3000miles ago. 2000 miles since the misfire started. It always starts easily cold or hot. It is smooth until the stationary idle drops to 800rpm at which point the misfire takes a few seconds to make itself felt. If this is a leaking or weeping injector what could be the possible fixes please?

My 2011/85k Caddy Maxi is getting the EGR replaced tomorrow (ouch). It's had injector 1 &3 replaced already (one of them by me). Limp mode when the EGR is faulty is tolerable. Limp mode with an injector gone is undrivable. So I'm toying with biting the bullet and just replacing the other 2 injectors. The vans not long been MoT'd and it's had quite a bit of work done on it in its former life (BG van), including a new turbo @ 61k, a suspension overhaul @ 73k and a brakes & Master cylinder overhaul @ 75k....so I think its worth it. Maybe :-)

Is this injector problem with the 1.6 only or does the 2.0 model have the same issues also ?

    • @willsvanadventures

I believe it's mainly the 1.6 but could be the 2.0. If you check the tops of the injectors for the codes, you'll see which ones you have.

Parts might be that cheap but the cost to get them replaced is much higher. Especially if they get stuck or it's on the roadside, that is the going cost. AA on the roadside repair is now £700 per injector.
