Huge thank you to Khun Mook for taking us on this incredible authentic Karen food adventure. She does tours in Mae Hong Son province of Thailand, contact her here: / mookshilltribecrafts
MAE HONG SON, THAILAND (àčàžĄàčàžźàčàžàžàžȘàžàž) - On Day 2 of this Karen tribal food tour, Mook and Shikomo took us on a fishing and foraging hike. We started off gathering some fresh tangerines from the orchard before we set off on our trek.
We headed to the river to do some stream fishing the Karen way, with a square net fitted with a bamboo frame. It definitely takes some time and effort, but we did catch quite a few small little fish and some tadpoles as well, which we later cooked. We also gathered some wild herbs and vegetables like ferns and pea eggplants. After fishing and foraging for mountain ingredients, we headed to a rice harvesting shack on the side of the mountain to cook lunch.
For lunch they pounded up some herbs and spices along with the fish and ferns and roasted them in a bamboo pole. Additionally, one of the most unique dishes they made was a soup made with fermented soy bean, hog plums, cold water, pickled and dried mustard greens, and finally some of the grilled fish for flavoring. It was so unique and refreshing and a flavor you can never forget.
It was another day of amazing local Karen tribal food in Thailand thanks to Mook and Shikomo! Thereâs nothing better than foraging and fishing for food and cooking it on spot - knowing where your food comes from.

This is definitely one of my favorite videos of yours Mark. We get to see you and your family fishing and having fun. Honestly such a wholesome moment.
Mark, I am so glad you are back in Thailand. I have had 77 years of living in the USA and I know as much as I want to about pizzas and hamburgers. Yes some of them are better than others, but it is such a waist of your superb talents to describe them rather than the subtle taste of Asia. I loved today's video. Much love from East Hampton NY.
I love how Micahâs parents just let him be a child! Playing in the water, enjoying life. And I love how Micah just blends wherever he goes, he is always playing with the other kids! What a wonderful life!
I wish every kid were able to experience that but sadly because of the Burmese army they are force to flee for their lives instead .
Was that Micah beating the water with a giant stick? Kids are the same the world over.
Micah has the best teaching ever, experiences!
Thanks Mark Wiens for this clip. I am a Karen girl from Myanmar who lived in a refugee camp in Thailand for 13 years. This brings back sweet memories of mine. I love to see the life style, culture, and food. Good to see you with the Karen top. May God bless you and your family.

Wish u all the best.
Me too. I was gunna say that.
Yesterday.. I watched the movie directed by angelina jolie - 'First They Killed My Father'. It s about the life of a young refugee.
Wish u a good luck and happy days!

Finally, I got to see Mark Weins experiencing so similar culture of mine.
Every ingredients that, they put in to make different dishes is so similar...... specially seeing the fermanted soyabean , that little standing chilli and the green leaves đ.... and lastly , that stuffed bamboo style of cooking....đ€
Feeling oneness and admiring you at the same....đ

Mark is such a positive VIBE. MARK IS AN ACTUAL VIBE
This has to be one of the best blogs Mark has made. I maybe a little biased because I live in an area in Thailand that is so similar to that. It's like going back in time. I try and explain to my friends back home the life style, but now I can share this video with them so they can see for themselves. Simple things in life hey.....sometimes mean the most.
Nice đ
agreed,u said what i could not in words

You are absolutely right, the simple things in life have great value, congratulations for such a wonderful lifestyle, I was able to learn more about your culture and I loved it, in fact it is a very ingenious idea to share this video with your friends, greetings from Mexico.
He just made a mistake that Karen are ethnic from Myanmar.
So is their food and culture.
You can claim as Thailand's if you wish.
Yes more Karen content from Mark !! You look great wearing the Karen traditional red top.
I can sit around and watch Mark Wiens from Sunrise to Sunset. Simplicity, Humility, Love, Diversity and just plain and pure Joy. God bless you.
Mark Iâve been following u since u first started out on ur own without ur beautiful wife. And after all of these years u cease to amaze me that u can STILL find places where people cook and eat completely different types of foods. Congratulations. Life time follower. â€ïž .
I love seeing how much Micah has grown and genuinely seems to enjoy these adventures. I remember when Mark declared at his birth that "He's an eater!". Looking forward to many more years of food adventures with you and the family.

This is the truest form of Thailand. I miss my hometown, the people, the simple of life. Pretty much everything and of course the food, so many great dishes. Brings me much of my childhood memories watching this video. Thanks Mark
Karen are Thailand people?
They may be in Thailand physically but Karen are from Myanmar and so is their food.
Watching this series is making me so emotional. Muang phaem is a place I feel so lucky to have called âhomeâ and seeing mook, sikomo, and all their magic shared by you is beautiful.

Hi Mark!
Thank you so much for doing this video, it was amazing. I think learn about other cultures is very important because it help us to know how special and unique is each region. I haven't travel many, but is awesome that people like you shows us diferents parts of the world. I didn't know about karen people but in this video I could see a little part of his culture and I really like it. It was very interesting about how they can go fishing and cooking their dish using the nature of his environment, which shows that using only nature we can create a great food with an awesome experience culinary.
I love the Thai people , so humble and welcoming, nothing is too much trouble, and their cooking is just so special, amazing place, love to you and the family Mark

Mark thank you so much for the videos from the Karen area there in Thailand. Totally amazing! A typical American would look around and say Iâm going to starve not seeing all of the natureâs bounty around them! They are blessed with so many herbs and natural seasonings. I make a Louisiana catfish (stew) Courtbouillion. I donât use the heads and I thought those ladies would think that would be wastefulđđđ I wish more people knew how to forage and eat locally, itâs a dying art in many places. Again thank you for these videos and look forward to more of this series and location.
