Just got materials to make a paver fire pit and bought enough lava rock to have some leftover just to try and start a small tub with a DIY filter. Wife did ask way somuch I told her I wanted to make sure I had more than I needed because I'm quarantined. And it so cheap
You are the lava King! Thanks for always sharing. You are a lot of fun to watch and I love learning long with you
Mary Paige Flynn Mr Lava Lava 😂😂
I never considered using lava rock. Dude, you are the man. I just got shade over my pond, so I'm definitely going to try this in my filter falls. I hope my pond makes a turn for the better now.
Ryan Francis right on braddah ..... it’s super cheap and I would switch it out every 2yrs
@@HaYNFishKeeper Hi Cool channel! Already watched a few of your videos and I have a question: Can I just leave those rocks sitting for 2 years without rinsing them once in a while?
@@Thinksamuel thank you for the love and support and to answer your question: I would rinse them out with aquarium or pond water at least every 6mo I would replace the rocks every two years
It’s the black substrate that’s making her colors pop! 👍🏾
Lava rock looked down upon in koi industry but it works great! Just like they don't want you to use salt from home depot. But buy a 16 to 20 oz for $30, or can 40lb bag for $5.
Facts💯💯🤙🏽🐠🤙🏽
Love your pond I'm a eskimo from Canada might be lucky to keep koi for a couple four months man if I had them the time you guys had my yard would be a jungle madd respect bro
Much love and aloha to u mah braddah 🤙🏽🐠🤙🏽
Thank you very much for creating those fun and useful videos! We are building a fish pond in our backyard right now. A fun DIY project!
That’s awesome!!🤙🏽🤙🏽
Thanks for the videos. Very informative and easy to follow. Looking forward to more.
Thomas Jensen 🤙🏽🐠🤙🏽 appreciate u
Here in canada lava rock is pretty cheap too if you buy a decent size bag, $7. I found black and threw a bunch in the bottom of my more shallow part of the pond, for the look, to cover the liner. The downside is ouch ouch on the feet when i have to get in there for something.
love your videos btw
Lol yeah it’s awesome substrate and I agree hard on the feet lol much love and aloha 🤙🏽🐠🤙🏽🇨🇦🇨🇦

@@HaYNFishKeeper thanks so much!
Awesome!! Do you have a video of how you built the filter boxes at the bottom of your pond and exactly what pump you used? Thx😊
Yes I use this box filter czcams.com/video/tgVc1nz27JI/video.html
About £40+ in UK for that bag of Lava Rock! 😭
I've never seen it for $5!
Dayum really that’s insane 🤙🏽🐠🤙🏽
I used Lava Rock in my DIY Canister filter on my 55 gallon..
🤙🏽🐠🤙🏽
Lovly
Thank you!! 🤙🏽🐠🤙🏽
Love urvchannel
Thank u 🤙🏽🐠🤙🏽
Lava rock has saved me a lot of fish. It was my first media when i learned about biological filtration. Also when you clean it wouldn't it be better to lave the lava rock in the water instead of on a rock in the sun? I know its only there for a few but it seems like if the lava rock dries out at all for any length of time the bacteria will die on it.
It’s fine it would only die if it was left out for hours it’s fine for 5min🤙🏽🐠🤙🏽
thx bro!
Right on braddah🤙🏽🤙🏽💯🐠
Thanks for the info. I’m new to all of this, but thinking of building my own pond. Would you still need the bio media if the pond didn’t have any fish, like if it was just a swim pond? Also, how often do you have to change out the lava rocks in your bio media filter bag? Btw, really like your energy.
Ahhh thanks for the love and support as far as the Lava rocks go I change them out every two years it can probably go to 3 but as cheap as a 20/30lb bag is I’d just rather be safe 🤙🏽🤙🏽
@@HaYNFishKeeper Thanks for the reply.
What kind of iris are on the outdoor water feature?
Do they survive in Sacramento winter?
Thanks.
Purple Iris and yes they survive they die down in winter than blossom in spring so pretty🤙🏽🤙🏽

Thanks Makuahine 🤙🏽♥️🐠🌺🐠♥️🤙🏽
Where do you get the black zip bags to hold the lava rock
Oh one Amazon or eBay type in aquarium media bags
600 gallons and you are using a 70@ gallon pond pump🤯. I heard You were supposed to ise about half amount of your ponds gallon for a pump. For example you should be using a 300 gallon pond pump. Am I wrong?????🤷♂️🤔
Depends on your bio load 🤙🏽🤙🏽💯💯
Do you have to drain your water feature in the winter? We just got a fountain ⛲ and were told it must be drained during winter or else it could crack when water freezes. We live in the Inland Empire So.Cal. at 2600 elevation. Thanks for rad videos bro
I land empire doesn’t get that cold maybe what low 30’s if so it’s like here, I ran my pump 24-7-365 but I also had fish in mine and the pump was running the filtration for my fountain, when I would need to drain it I would use my Buckethead check put this video it’s a game changer! czcams.com/video/W4CeZGnG30g/video.html
Awesome thanks bro. Will def check it out 👍
How hot does the water in the pond gets during the summer. I am going to build a pond in my back yard, but Florida where I live is very hot during the summer. I am going to build it 4 1/2 feet deep and about 10 feet long and 5 feet wide, for my turtles, and I don't want them to cook. Thank you for the video.
That’s awesome yeah FL is super hot I would put a sun shade sail over the top 🤙🏽💯🐠
@@HaYNFishKeeper I dug the pond, but I need to buy the rocks and gravel, the liner is in and filling up with rain water.
@@Zelaznogsiul-63 nice!!
Quick question: does this only require the Poly-fill and red lava stone?? No sponges?
Check this video out this talks about how i create it czcams.com/video/Xk9okSCAlxQ/video.html
Thanks for the love and support Stephanie 🤙🏽🐠🌺🐠🤙🏽
if you have well water, do you still have to worry about the bacteria?
Definitely!! WELL WATER just means you don’t have to dechlorinate your water with prime or another type
besides you place your rocks in ur water fall container, do you place it in your filter?
That’s my filter too!🤙🏽🐠🤙🏽
Shaggy
🤙🏽💯
I’ve got black lava rock, I was using for decoration, does that work the same?
Oh yes most definitely, Lava rock is awesome I love it!! 🤙🏽💯🤙🏽
Hello! Just wondering, what do you do with the water after you clean the lava rock bag with gunk? You said rinse with pond water. Do you you throw the water away and refill the pond with fresh water or pour the water with gunk back to the pond?
Oh no Alex u never poor the water back into the pond I water my plants with it cause it’s Rich in nitrites and excellent fertilizer for plants and flowers ... and as far as taking two buckets of water out of my pond isn’t a real big deal because my my pond is 600gallons so it really doesn’t even make a dent on it so I don’t have to refill the pond 🤙🏽
Thank you for the reply I appreciate it!!
Are these "barbecue lava rocks" ??
They actually landscaping lava rocks but u can also use barbecue lava rock too
Shaggy is the artist.
Where do you get those hose
U nailed it... u can get the hose at Home Depot 🤙🏽🐠🤙🏽
