In 1895, crowds flooded Coney Island to see America’s first-ever looping coaster: the Flip Flap Railway. But its thrilling flip caused cases of severe whiplash, neck injury and even ejections. Today, coasters can pull off far more exciting tricks and do it safely. Brian D. Avery investigates what rollercoasters are doing to your body and how they’ve managed to get scarier and safer at the same time.

I don’t think people realize how complex coasters are, I worked one at Cedar point and the control panel for it is huge with a million buttons and there is so much to rides people never realize that
Do you guys have control over the force of the trim brakes around the track? I was at Mirabilandia this weekend and we rode Katun like a million times, including almost an hour nonstop before the park closed. It felt as though once the operators saw that the only people left were the ones getting off only to run back to the entrance, they turned the trim brakes way down. We harldy slowed at all at the trim brakes and the final brake run before the station almost pulled my face off a few times.
(edit: not that I'm complaining 😂)
So the control panel is only the tip of the iceberg as far as just the control aspect of a ride goes. The PLC cabinets are a mess of complex systems. Trims on rides cannot be manually controlled on anything more recent that 1990. They are usually set to apply various amounts of braking force based on the speed of the train, which moves slower when lighter. So if you were the only few people on the ride, the train was probably running slow enough to not need to be trimmed by the system
@@demoniack81 I wish they could, but I don’t think operators can do that.

Almost died on a rollercoaster when I was little. Six Flags, old run down rollercoaster, young me excited for first coaster, got in, old seatbelts, seatbelt broke and I had to hold on the the bar for my life and the guy next to me also helped hold me down. Scared me so much I haven’t been on another since (Luckily no loop)
Which ride? Majority of seat belts on coasters are measuring devices for ride operators, not safety mechanisms for riders.
marco polo is it the one called “Roar”?
@@gavinhatfield2354 some of the six flag rides are really good and can be enjoyed but this one ride the american scream machine got me dead!!
Don't be scared of riding rollercoaster, I've ridden a lot of them (from small children's rides, to coasters with 14 inversions). In Western countries and Japan, there are so many safety measures, and the laws are were scrict. 2 people die in a rollercoaster accident a year (worldwide, including China), sound crazy huh? Well this number translate into: the chance of dying on a coasters is 1:600000, that safer than flying, walking down strairs and driving a car. Six Flags coasters aren't dangerous, but a lot of them can use a new coat of paint!
Bottom line: don't be so scared, it's way safer than you might assume!
(Also: I'm Dutch, sorry for my broken English)
Omg me too! Ceder Point 1999, I got flung out. I'm just under 5 ft, and weight would have been around 120 then. The shoulder restraint, didn't go down enough? I slid under it, I was like "Oh I'm fine, it'll grab again." Nope, busted upper arm, and twisted ankle, I fell into the 3 ft deep water.

Me : I to start sleeping at 12am
Also me at 3am : what are the effects of roller coasters
I've experienced graying out before and I thought I never would because I'm so tolerant to roller coaster elements.... but the roller coaster I rode is known to make people pass out and I rode it three times in a row, without stopping.
Si many people grey out on roller coasters and welcome it? Like I hear enthusiasts saying I greyed out woooh! Like is it really had if you grey out?
@@nathaniel9526 it's all depending on how your body handles the g-forces. For most enthusiasts, they are quite fine since they know how to breathe properly when riding. If it's someone who strongly fears roller coasters and is breathing heavily or panicked, they will likely pass out. But most of the time, people are fine and it's very rare for someone to grey out or even pass out.

3:18 you show literally every harness other than the one specifically designed for airtime-focused coasters - THE LAP BAR!!! Otherwise, this is the best GP video ever, great job!
Is the lap bar safer than the others? Because I felt so terribly vulnerable in the loops with just that flimsy bar over my lap holding me from certain death. I would’ve given anything for an actual harness or something
Error at 1:07 - On descents, you spend *potential* energy, not kinetic energy. Kinetic energy *increases* on the down slopes.

TED-Ed's videos are roller coasters in themselves.
Focus is dragged at the same time by excellent animation through eyes and brilliant narration through ears.

*I'm on a roller coaster that only goes up, my friend*
Ελεαννα Λιολιου what goes up must come down
x_. miyah ._x gravity at it's finest
Well buddy, you're about to reach the Peak of 93 meters, you're about to experience a plummet at speeds up to 151 Kilometers per hour, and down you go. you drop at an angle of 80 degrees and You feel weightless for three seconds. and there comes a huge turn that's very high off the ground (an overbank), now you're Going trough a turn near to the ground while going trough a tunnel, and four seconds later you go over a hill, the hill makes you feel weightless. and down you go. (Airtime hill) and now you're going trough another turn that gradually increases in height and lowers in a time of around 8 seconds. now you're heading towards another high off the ground turn (overbank) and you come back down and enter a 20 degree turn. Now you're going over a smaller hill, and you feel, once again, weightless. Now, you enter another tunnel which also has a turn, which takes three seconds, and now you're going over a really small hill that makes you fly up against the safety restraint, preventing you from being launched out of your seat. now you enter a 35 degree Turn that takes around 2 seconds, and then you go straight for a very short time, then you enter another turn that's pretty high off the ground (Overbank) and you go back down. You start to go slower in a short period of time. now, you enter another very small turn and slow down even further. then you go straight and you roll into the loading station, the place where you got in. now your safety bar infront of you opens, and you step out and exit to the left side.
