- Moon Knight's third episode introduced the Ennead, the pantheon of Egyptian gods who have abandoned humanity. But where did the Ennead come from? Are they gods like Thor, or like the celestials? And how do they connect to the Eternals, Thor Love and Thunder, and the rest of the Marvel Cinematic Universe? We're here to explain.

The show Moon Knight is tied to Egyptian mythology. The hero works for a god, the villain is a god, and all these gods are there too-it’s a lot to process, if you don't know a lot about this lore. So, we’re here to explain what the heck the Ennead are, and how they connect to the deep, rich history of the Marvel Cinematic universe.
In the first episode, we were introduced to the group known as the Ennead [clip]. Now, in episode 3, we finally see the Ennead together and learn that they use their avatars to keep tabs on Earth.
That one line opens up so many questions. Why don’t they meddle anymore? Why did they meddle to begin with? Who exactly are they? Where are they? And why did they abandon humanity?Well, we’re here to break it down.
First, let’s go over what these beings are. In one of our earlier videos, we put out a theory where these Egyptian gods are just aliens from a different planet. They share similarities with other aliens we’ve previously seen in the MCU -magic like the Norse Gods, controlling their host bodies like Venom, etc.
In the comics, the Egyptian gods come from a dimension next to Earth called Celestial Heliopolis.Their home city is built on a small planet like Asgard. In some origin stories, the gods actually originated on Earth but traveled to Celestial Heliopolis when the pharaohs started to rule Egypt. Which we’ve also theorized about in a past video.
See, in the comics a couple supervillains have their roots in ancient Egypt. One is Apocalypse, like we saw in that movie. [go go power rangers]. Apocalypse was the first mutant, and he’s thousands of years old. So it could be that the rise of this new pharaoh, this mutant, caused the people of earth to turn away from the gods and worship him.
And the other Egyptian villain from Marvel comics is Kang the conqueror. I'm sure you know this, but Kang is the evil variant of he who remains.. In the comics he was a time traveler who went into the past to conquer egypt, and made his super high tech headquarters inside the sphinx.
If Kang conquered ancient Egypt, then this could have also caused the people to turn away from their gods.
Back to Celestial Heliopolis-it’s also known as the Overvoid. Now this seems to be the place where the gods in Moon Knight currently are, as Khonshu says.
But exactly when were these gods on Earth? Well, in the book Steven was reading, we learn that the Egyptians originally revered one god whose likeness was never represented. So there were never any statues or drawings to portray its likeness.
Over time the Egyptians split this one deity into multiple deities, each with their unique individual roles. Eventually, humans favored some gods more than others. This is similar to the Eternals, who came to Earth in 5000 BC to help civilizations prosper, with each member of the team being deified in different places around the globe.
Now there are literally hundreds of Egyptian gods, but the Ennead is the main council of gods with 9 members. There are different schools of thought on which gods are actually in the ennead-it’s like do you prefer The Van halen of Sammy Hagar or David Lee Roth.
When Ennead converges for the trial of Khonshu, we see that every avatar represents the role of their host god. The highest ranking members are Osiris, lord of the dead, his wife Isis the mother goddess, and their son Horus, god of kingship and the sky.
In the comics and egyptian mythology itself, Osiris is the god of the dead and the afterlife. His most famous myth is when he was sliced into pieces by his jealous brother Seth. His wife Essees half revived him to have their son Horus- making him the first mummy. Eventually Horus fights Seth, and aids his mother in fully reviving Osiris, giving Osiris the role of lord of the dead and afterlife. At the end of the 3rd episode, Osiris is the one to explain to Harrow of Khonshu’s imprisonment, which could be thought of as death for a god.
Do you have any questions about the show?
How do I win the free DVD?
Is the actor who played Hathor's avatar a voice actor? I feel like I recognize her voice from a video game.
Yes, are you in touch with your feminiminy? 6:00
Great stuff thanks
Hi
Can't wait to see the Egyptian gods Winged Dragon of Ra, Slifer the Sky Dragon, and Obelisk the Tormentor.
It'll be even better if we can get Horakhty, the creator God of Light
Your comment is too OP. Save some power for the rest of us dawg.
Or the moment where Layla reveals she has the ka of the Blue-Eyes White Dragon
Turns out moon knight was a spirit of a long dead pharaoh trapped in a puzzle
lmaooo this is a underrated comment
I've seen people complaining about how they left humanity for the same reason as the eternals, but I think they're missing that they say they left because humanity abandoned them. I like how their reasoning plays into the idea that the gods are lazy and arrogant.
Humanity was played by the dark forces
Or Kang somehow interfered.
@@WarAlex16 I can’t see Kang being involved, not everything is Kang just like not everything was Thanos in the last saga.
Humanity abandoned the “Egyptian” gods because they simply don’t believe in them anymore, ask someone today if they think they’ll meet Anubis if they die.
@@Oraculo791 this is exactly it, lol. At least so far, it seems like most of the gods don't do anything for humanity literally because they're salty that we don't follow their religions anymore.
Like American Gods and DC comics Egyptian and Norse, Greek Deities become Old Gods like forgotten and abandoned by their own worshippers. Rise of New Gods control technology and new schools
It'd definitely be great if they unite the Asgardian gods, Olympian gods & Ennead in Thor Love & Thunder. Also don't forget the Taoist gods of Ta Lo!
the "love" of them coming together, and "thunder", the clash to make it happen
Reminds me of Age of Mythology if they do this.
Percy Jackson confirmed for Love & Thunder 😂
@@djodyssey99 HELL YEAHH

@@djodyssey99 oh nah 💀
the scene when Khonsu and Marc rearranging the stars was absolutely beautiful! Love that scene, gives me the feeling for some reason.

It’s Steven not Marc
it was both beautiful and scary for me.
I thought the introduction of the other God's was rather messy. However, if they introduced them not only to further the plot in Moon Knight but to die at the hands of Gorr as well.... I would love that.
The whole don't meddle thing made me think of Eternals straight away. Eternals are now going to start medelling again, Thor and his Asgard crew are now literally integrated onto earth, and gonna get Jane as a bit of an avatar of Thor. Black Panther and Wakanda has now opened up to the rest of the world. It wouldn't surprise me if Shang chi is some sort of avatar for a chinese god with those rings. This is all leading to some Gods showdown. I wonder if like wayyyyyy in the past the main gods got together and made a deal with each other to stop medelling/squabbling over ruling man. So when Loki tried to rule earth, Odin was like FFS the pact was broken so kinda why he was super angry? Just a theory tho.
Actually that's a brilliant theory
Old idea tho. Some alien gods already made such pact over the world and it was shown in X-men via Juggernaut.
What do you think of Moon Knight, halfway through?
awesome!
I'm so stoked to see more.
Didn't know about its existence, but it's quite good!
Excellent job
I love it but Anubis is one of the most famous gods in the Egyptian mythology
I love the show so far, but the meeting with the gods just felt lazy.
Arthur Harrow is Khonshu's former avatar and starts a fairly good size cult to worship Ammit. He has a staff full of Ammit's power. Khonshu makes a grand gesture to point out that his former, pissed off avatar is in the desert to find Amit.
It's hard to believe that none of these gods have any power to sense bullshit.
They could have shortened the scene to:
Marc/Khonshu: Arthur found the scarab and is about to release Ammit!
Arthur: Khonshu is a dick and Marc is weird.
Gods: We agree. Khonshu is a dick and Marc is really weird. Now leave.
I completely agreed. Not only that, but even the set for that scene and the lack of CGI (only went as far as glowing eyes) felt lazy as well. The set was very dark lit, and just threw some Egyptian statues and put it at the base of a pyramid and called it good. I wish they would’ve put it in a secret spooky crypt of a pyramid or something like that. Seemed like they just said “good enough” and went with it. I felt that immediately while watching that scene. Also yes, the discussion was cut so short and didn’t even hear Khonshu or Marc out at all. There was so much more that could’ve been said. Like “look at the tattoo on his arm!” Or “look at his staff!” Would’ve gone a long way. Maybe the gods are conspiring against Khonshu. I guess that would make the most sense.
@@christianolson8543 I think most of the budget went into the last 3 episodes. Episode 4 already looks insane
Exactly 😂
Lazy writing leads to the Gods coming off as Dumb AF.
None have the power to judge people (other than Ammit and Khonchu), so they wouldn't be able to do anything anyways to Harrow
Based on the statues, the missing gods are probably:
Ammit (imprisoned)
Khonshu (banished)
Seth (probably banished by Horus)
Anubis (MIA)
Lol I like how most of the egyptian gods have cool names and theres just Seth
@@Playpumaa65 that’s the Greek version of Set(i)’s nans
@@Playpumaa65 Haha I also like that Marvel uses the (valid) spelling Seth instead of Set. Makes him sound like a suburban high school bully. Just a rude dude with an attitude.
I would lose my sh*t if Christian Bale showed up as Gorr at the end of Moon Knight like how Jonathan Majors showed up at the end of Loki. I think we need that segue into Thor Love & Thunder since we’ve seen absolutely nothing about it so far.
...Yep.
If only any of phase 4 marvel was trying to do any conective tissue at all.. I cant express how played out I feel the whole "this show is going to change the entire fabric of the mcu moving forward" line that we get from MCUtubers seems to feel. I don't have much faith anything will be as deep/connective as we long for it to be anymore
Gorr is probably gonna cut the gods down to size. Remember the Atlanteans worship Poseidon, brother of zeus and Namor is the main villain of Black Panther 2.
Naw he ain’t takin the Egypt gods, there in there own dimension to where only they can get too. Only if they decide to intervene and help out would they have trouble with him!!
Yeah they definatrly introduce greek gods but before black panther there is thor love and thynder so i dont know maybe in black panther 2 there will be introduced poseidon not every greek gods
@@zzirfamo24 An Egyptian God is actually already confirmed to make appearance in Thor 4 so nope
@@andyseinfeld1954 wrong, I found no evidence of that so send me a link for that??
This video was super informative and entertaining. Like usual, Ryan hits these right out of the park. My biggest question to all of this is, if the Pantheon of Egyptian gods turned there backs on humanity and no longer meddle in the lives of mere mortals, then why do they still feel the need to select human avatars when they don’t really do anything? My other question is, if Gorr the God Butcher is going to be the main antagonist/ villain of Thor Love and Thunder, then that means we will most likely see him wield the Necrosword which was forged by Knull the God of the Symbiotes and Exolons. Does that mean Knull is apart of the MCU and will we be seeing him at some point in a future MCU film?
Possible, would be a great villain
Maybe the gods need avatars for the exact reason we just saw in episode 3.
@@mpls1982 So if they only select human avatars for the simply means of making sure not one god over steps there boundaries within the realm we call Earth, then I guess you pretty much answered my question. I’m assuming we’ll have to wait and see what happens when one of the avatars goes above and beyond with what they’re allowed to do. For example, Arthur Harrow’s deception and insurrection to the Enead and his quest to free Amit from her tomb.
You’ll probably see your mom
I think your breakdowns are the best on CZcams now. Newrockstars used to be up there but you’ve taken the cake for sure. This one is an the perfect example of a well thought out theory that I’m sure many people hopes is true because it would be incredible to explore. Newrockstars is over there taking about how Khonsu turned the world back in time 2000 years which obviously didn’t happen.
Asgardians are aliens in the MCU, the Egytpian gods come from the Overvoid aka Celestial Heliopolis, the origins of the Celestials are unknown, and we are seeing Greek gods in love and thunder ( Ares was also teased in Ragnarok)
How or when was Ares teased in Ragnarok?
Yes pls explain
When thor went to sakar, theres 4 warriors on the tower. One of them is ares, another is beta ray bill, and theres 2 more
I’m pretty sure they retcon that. Can use odin said they were aliens in Thor 1 now there gods in Thor 3. Thor was always a god. He just qualify has a alien cause he’s not from planet earth

Thanks for your amazing videos Ryan!
I’m would be interested in seeing Horus, as I just did a project on Ancient Egypt
I'd love to see you update this post, with Love and Thunder, Wakanda Forever, and Quantamania, with it's Rama Tut cameo, included in an updated theory.
Great post
Think youre missing the clue right in front of your face Ryan. Arthur harrow isn't really the avatar of ammit. He's the avatar of Anubis. He's trying to bring ammit back, so I doubt he would give up his own power if he was ammits avatar. Anubis was the one with a summonable jackal army that would weigh people's souls against a feather on the scales and if they weren't lighter than the feather they would be fed to ammit. Which makes me think harrow is Anubis's avatar in league with ammit using one of ammits artifacts. Similar to how khonshu and Hathor have a history together in Egyptian mythology because they are both gods of the sky(life), kind of like how Anubis and ammit are both gods of earth(death.)
How would the gods NOT know who his real god was? Wouldn't they have seen that?
@@ColorMeConfused29 they never say who harrows avatar actually is. It's just heavily implied that's it's ammit. But I think that's for a bait and switch at the end when they reveal he's in league with ammit and the scales of life and death are no longer held by a fair unbais entity. And when Thanos snapped most of the people away ammit was fixing to eat them all. But I'm guessing he's not happy about hulk snapping a bunch of souls outta his tummy making him hungry as fuck. I think that's why ammit wants to be resurrected so badly because he feels cheated out of his "soul food."
@@BrockSamsonite sheesh i hope that’s true
I rather like your theory.
If Ammiut is imprisoned in stone, and Harrow still is able to use her powers for like 10 different things as we have so far seen, then why is marc not able to summon the suit and heal his gun shots?
Maybe the staff itself holds some of ammits power idk tho
@@yessirski1013 you’re right it does Harrow says it in episode 2 when layla shows up with the scarab
Crushing it as always Ryan! Always looking forward to your breakdowns! 🔥
From long after the show aired, looking back on these videos makes me intrigued that we could pull so much out of the clues they left for us that they actually didn't end up using to amount to anything. The set design guys are really good at their jobs, but lore like this could have made the show so much more interesting if they had actually included it. But hey, maybe season 2...
I think that the reason why Khonshu is trying soo hard not to let Amit out could be that both of them went against the other gods...maybe they were together or something...and he finds out Amits intention to betray even Khonshu and punish the innocent...and then when the other gods cage Amit, i think Khonshu still had some love left for her and maybe saved her from being completely banished and find her a respectful place, maybe that's why he remembers that night...and i think he fears the worse of her return
I’m pretty sure the group we saw were five avatars…
Isis, Osiris, Horus, Hathor and Tefnut. She didn’t talk as much, but at the end you’ll see her, when they did the imprisonment of Konshu.
might be one of your best videos here.
I just had a thought, what if other pantheons like the Asgard or the Ennead fed off the energies given by intelligent life meant for the gestating Celestial? Basically, by worshiping them, humans weren’t feeding the Celestial, but the Pantheons had to be careful not to feed too greedily lest they find themselves at the receiving end of the Eternals or worse, Arishem’s wrath.
The real question is, how did Harrow escape Khonshus grasp? Did Khonshu just get tired of him?
if you read the comics it can be easily rectified. All Khonshu needs to do is put a different star in the place of the ones that went supernova. He does this using his main power which is called lunar kinesis. It allows him to shift and move any cosmic body to his will including stars, moons, and planets.
What if they stepped back from humanity because they realised the race itself was doomed to inevitably perish when the celestial growing within the planet would eventually be born?
I’d like to think that Odin knew about Earth will eventually get destroyed & he doesn’t want to battle with Celestials. Maybe Odin’s father negotiated with Celestials & that’s how Asgard is not really a planet. He didn’t like when Thor brought Jane to Asgard. Asgardians are pretty much protectors of nine realms so growing intellectual beings are the reason Celestials can be born. Egyptian gods also probably aware of this too.
Thank you for this, Ryan!😊
you did it again, ryan! another world class breakdown. also, am i the only one who absolutely fell in love with yatzil? she is a literal goddess!
Harrow didn't actually lie at the trial, he just omitted certain facts that would have proven his guilt. He tricked them by only saying things that were technically true.
Thanks Ryan!

Well that… clears alot up. Thanks you guys.
I find it so funny Oscar Isaac is playing the Moon Knight, an Egyptian marvel hero, who used to play as Apocalypse/En Sabah Nur, a marvel villain
I think the prison type place we see in the trailer will be in Marks head and khonshu helped Mark to imprison Steven and Jake so that they wouldn’t interfere. Anyone else think the same?
I hope they show Anubis and Sobek soon!!
The panther goddess is definitely the black panthers avatar and I also believe that these Egyptian gods give gifts to their avatars to help them think about it Harro has the cane the black panther has the heart shaped herb and konshu and Mark Spector has the moonlight costume so it’s obvious that the black panther is indeed the avatar two bast and bast definitely gave him or them the heart shape Herb as a gift just like Herro has the cane Konshu and Mark Spector has the moonlight costume as a gift
"panther goddess is definitely the black panthers avatar"
You've got that backwards.
If that’s the case. Why didn’t Tchalla appear in the with the rest of the Avatars
@@tmac731 well there isnt a current black panther actor

I've been thoroughly enjoying Moon Knight. It feels fresh and new, yet addicting like the avengers was. I watched all the shows after End game like Loki, Hawkeye and Wanda Vision and it just felt to much like grasping at straws in an attempt to keep milking the Avengers. Moon Knight doesnt feel like that at all. 😁

Yes its mindbreaking 🤯
Writers really brilliant, Moon knight is a success to me, my fave series of Marvel.
My question is, why dont the egyptian gods (ennead) know that harrow is lying? Where are they? Cant they see his actions on earth?
Right!! I was wondering this the whole time Harrow was speaking to them. Not only that, they can sense/see the sky manipulated, but not 40-50 people digging up a banished God in Egpyt lol.
ScreenCrush: *explains Bast theory*
Me: Ryan, you madlad. You’ve done it again🤯
my favpart in thor love n thunder is when thor looked in to the camera and said "its thorbin time".
I love that it’s kevin bacon and during infinity war whats her face from guardians asks about him being on the avengers and thor says “he might be on the team…”
Gods and their Avatars-
Osiris, Isis and Horus- Rich People
Geb and Nut- Unknown Avatars
Hathor- Yatzel
Tef Nut- Wakandan Woman
Bast- T'Challa/Black Panthers
Khonshu- Marc/Moon Knights'
Ammit- None (currently)/Arthur Harrow (half possessed)
So if I’m correct about mythology.....Anubis would bring a soul into the underworld. And the heart of the soul would be weighed in balance to a feather that was carried by Anubis. If the soul was exceptionally evil or they lived a bad life the souls heart would be eaten by Ammit who was said to look like a dog alligator cross
This so cool, imagine if you have been chosen by any God to be their avatar.
I love mythologic stories and drawings. Wrote lots of things about them. And when I saw Ennead in Marvel, I was happy. Now, I tend to think It may be very interesting to see if they add some gods from the mythologies of Turkic, Mayan/Aztec/Incan, Slavic, Indian, and Japonic. They have also really cool goods and stories with deeply detailed backgrounds.
For example, In Turkic mythology, there's a legend called "Grey Wolf legend".
"""The legend tells of a young boy who survived a raid in his village. A she-wolf finds the injured child and nurses him back to health. He subsequently impregnates the wolf which then gives birth to ten half-wolf, half-human boys. One of these, Ashina/Asena, becomes their leader and establishes the Ashina clan which ruled the Göktürks and other Turkic nomadic empires."""
So, in MCU, we can see them for background on how the first werewolves were created in the world with the consequence tied with some the deities. Because there is a series called "Werewolf by Night" and it'd be a logical and reasonable choice to tie them to some different higher powers.
Or the Mayan/Aztec/Incan side, there is a "Quetzalcoatl" which is also a very colorful one that even may tie with Chinese dragons as we saw Shang Chi.
In noticing the missing gods and then seeing the statues in the credits that are like Khonshu's, I thought perhaps they were also imprisoned for one reason or another?

As for the Kang death, it happened because of the infinity stone time heist which was necessary, it was either that or one of the 14 million alternate futures were half the universe remained snapped so I don't think it was out of arrogance.
But the thing that he did do wrong was how he was so casual about the spell on erasing the universe's memory. It felt out of character. Didn't like the way he was handled in no way home
Someone who's spent years in a time loop fighting Dormamu and seen 14 million futures should be wise but I guess they needed a macguffin for the plot as initially Multiverse of madness was supposed to release before no way home and whatever happened in that would be the reason for the multiversal crossover in no way home but due to covid and reshuffling this was done.

Edit: on the point of his arrogance, if u think about it: both times he abused time (the time loop and 14 million futures as you mentioned) he ended up saving the day despite not being fully knowledgable. His plans in the unkown have been working, so in No Way Home he decided to cast the spell with an air of wisdom, thinking he knows the best outcome. His ego finally got the best of him
@@kaizenkltr Yes that makes sense and he was a pretty egotistical person in the first movie. But I didn't think he could do something so stupid
With Egyptian gods entering the scene, I hope the next major villain is the pharaoh Akhenaten, he was badass in the comics and it took pretty much everyone to defeat him.
Look again at scene in Episode 2 Summon the Suit when Steven is being fired. There is one of those little stone Gods on the desk. I'll predict those recommended wonderful doctors turn out to be Gods other celestial help. The HR rep ends by telling Steven he's not alone. Which is also easter eggish as we know Steven is at this point not aware that he is at least 3 people. So lets see if Mr HR reappears as some type of help.
