That pilot getting solo time by taxiing around isn't helping himself learn anything other than how to cut corners

Nothing like building flight hours on the ground! Why is that guy even flying? If you have 40 mins to burn, that's a lot of pattern work and fun flying!

Remember when pilots used to try to get “flight” time? The pilot who tries to pad his flight hours with unnecessary time taxiing around to meet a requirement, will likely eventually start fudging his log book. You’re only robbing yourself dude. The only time excessive taxi will provide any skill building benefit to a pilot is if you put a pilot out on the ramp in a 20-30 knot wind in a J3.

Pro tip about VFR cruise altitudes. Bellow 3000' AGL you are exempt from §91.159 VFR Cruising Altitude or Flight Level. So if your under 3000' AGL you can cruise at any altitude including flat thousands. Of course you have to act with best judgement since you're not leaving yourself a lot of options and you have a higher potential to conflict with other traffic at such a low altitude, but it's something to keep in mind should the need arise.

Brought back memories! I got my pilot's license in May of 1991 and had to divert into KISO due to thunderstorms in the vicinity. Good luck!

Good stuff, Patrick! Keep making flying vids. It’s so fun go along for the ride when someone is working through their ratings. I’m finally back in the after a looong hiatus and sharing the experience on my channel That Hippie Pilot. - Chris
