Band Maid was formed in 2013 by founder Miku Kobato, she plays rhythm guitar and she writes the lyrics! She worked at a popular maid cafè in Tokyo, she also was in a jpop band called lil cumin, that band didn’t last long! The industry asked Miku what she thought about bands, since she really didn’t know much about bands she then developed a concept of girls playing cool music while wearing maid outfits! In Japan, the maid cafe’s cater to their master with the utmost attention, she thought it would be a great idea for a band to do the same with the audience! She found lead guitarist and songwriter Kanami Tono, Kanami knew of a drummer, Akane Hirose, who she would use to record some music for her channel, Akane then knew of a bad ass Bass player she attended music college with. They auditioned and played a gig when Miku realized her voice wasn’t strong enough for the direction they wanted to head. They auditioned for singers when Miku picked Saiki Atsumi, she loved her voice! The top dogs thought having twin singers would be cool cuz at the time Miku couldn’t play a note on guitar, if you go back to the MV of Thrill you’ll see her holding a rickenbacher and not playing it! Anyway, they thought that Saiki should be the one to hold a guitar for looks but that didn’t do well until our pigeon (Miku) stepped up and said she would do it! Finally, Kanami told her that if she was gonna hold a guitar she might as well learn to play it! Kanami became her sensei and today Miku is an incredible guitarist! Band Maid is what we’ve been waiting for for many years! Their live shows are amazing, 20-22 songlist! You haven’t seen anything yet! Welcome gorgeous to the wonderful world of Band Maid!!! ☮️

Yes, the vocals are amazing and BAND-MAID is the best HARD-ROCK-N-ROLL band on the planet!
Their new single, "Different", was created to be the theme song for an anime, and it's fast, frantic, and seems like chaos at first until you learn how it goes. The MV for "Rinne" is also super fast. I keep calling it Buddhist Speed Metal because secretly I'm hoping Buddhist Speed Metal will become a genre. The MVs for "Dice" and "Bubble" and "Don't You Tell ME" all show off their rock chops. Oh, and "Puzzle" if you're not already impressed with their lead guitarist.
The Live videos for "Freedom", "Play" and "Choose Me" are just the tip of the iceberg.
They also play slower, more melodic songs. The MV for "Daydreaming" and "Endless Story" are favorites of mine, and the Live version of "Wonderland" is beautiful also.

"Different" is a good suggestion for harder stuff. Also the Blooming MV is pretty hard, nice guitar work.

When you listen to your first two Band-Maid song, and then you realize that there are dozens (plural, dozens) more songs just as good. You are in for a hell of a ride.
Freedom is another great live track , plus it gives you a good look at the drummer's skills. Akane is a monster .
More the fact while in solo (Gorilla!) mode she still maintains a perfect time. Plus that smile!!!!

Yep, they're addictive. No hangover though, as long as you partake in a little hair of the dog - that's why I start every day with the maids! They are actually taking the grand hard rock of my youth and putting their own mark on it - in short, breathing life into the seriously good hard rock scene. Best rock band in. the. world.

You're gonna need some good full size headphones for this, that can do justice to the arse kicking sound they make, especially Akane's drumming and Misa's gorgeous bass work. AKG with the over ear big cans are recommended, ranging from $50 up on Amazon with the $240 AKG Pro Audio K701 being a big jump up in quality (retail much higher) if you can do that yet. Light, flat response, open, studio-mix level. Hoping to get these next myself.

About the idea of Domination: They continue this theme for awhile. Their next album after the one this was on (also Domination), last year, was Conqueror. When it came out in digital form, within 48 hours it was #10 album download on iTunes for the PLANET.
When the CD and DVD albums dropped later in the month, again, it was reported by Billboard as #11 in international sales of hard rock albums in all formats.
That was a year ago. Fans have multiplied, all from other fans. No big corporate bribery happening here. This is a grassroots movement to share the best rockers on the planet with other music fans and get them that recognition, and it is happening!
I'm hoping we can get the same info when the next album drops next month. I expect its position will be in single digits - #7? #5? On to conquer!
One other factoid I haven't seen here yet (forgive me if I simply missed it) is that Jimmy Page is a fan, especially of Akane the drummer. In 2016 he was at a music show in Tokyo that included Band-Maid. After, Akane got a message that he wanted to meet her backstage and get a pic together. She thought someone was messing with her, but agreed and yep, it was THAT Jimmy Page. He had some encouraging words and they got the pic. The original post by Akane on Twitter:

I totally relate to you. First song I heard was Freedom (better drum solo by the way) and immediately downloaded about 18 songs into my ipod. They have this knack for coming up with super catchy Choruses. They are incredible!

BTW, most of that breakdown was just added for the live performance. That's the sort of thing they do, usually adding new intros to songs, which they change for every tour. They are also versatile enough to change the setlist for nearly every show they do.

Saw BabyMetal and these kids over a 2 wk period last year in Dallas. The kids are the best pure rock act on the planet today.
It always makes me smile watching Miku fall off the band stand after her challenge to Kanami. She is famous for her stage falls and trips...by her own admission, she is a klutz on-stage.

For some background: Miku decided to form a rock band while she was working as a waitress at a Japanese maid cafe, so the "band of maids" concept was her idea. Kanami and Akane were on board with it. Saiki and Misa, not so much. But they went along with it (as you saw in the "Thrill" video.....very early Band Maid). As time progressed, Miku allowed Saiki and Misa to have more input on their costume designs to more reflect their personalities. Miku came across Kanami online. Kanami then suggested Akane for drums as they had worked together in previous projects. Akane, in turn, recommended Misa with whom she had attended the same music school. Initially, Miku intended to sing lead. But after a few rehearsals, she decided her voice wasn't powerful enough for hard rock, so she brought Saiki on board. To me, that says a lot about Miku's character. She takes a "backseat" in the band she founded, backing up Saiki on vocal and Kanami on guitar. She cares more about what's good for the band than her own personal ego.
Looking forward to the next reaction. Other commenters recommend "Freedom" from the same show next. I'd agree that'd be a good next reaction.

I've been a fan since 2015 ("Thrill" was my introduction, as well) and they just keep getting better and better. Definitely recommend seeing them when you get the chance. I had the chance to see them in Dallas in Sept. 2019, on their World Domination Tour, and they were excellent. Incredibly talented and flat-out fun to watch. Absolutely worth the 4-hour drive. :-)

Onset, an instrumental shows the bands creativeness, and technical playing. Puzzle, Blooming, Moratorium, The dragon cries all great songs. The dragon cries is a video, and they sing it in english.
I just want to say this very Live Video is the Song that REALLY REALLY REALLY turned me into a Band Maid Fan i liked Thrill before and Choose me and Alone. But this just just another Level of Band Maid.

I'm glad you turned it up, you have a lot of background noise wherever you're broadcasting from. Play and/or Freedom from this concert are really good too. You're barely scratching the surfacing. You took a while to get to them because you got addicted to Nightwish too. Nightwish and these ladies are the two bands I listen to all the time now. Freedom has the BIG drum solo on it.
Side note, Band Maid is by far my favorite but there are a number of other really good all female Japanese bands. Black Pink, Aldious, Mary's Blood, Garcharic Spin (hope I spelled that correctly) and a number of others. Ooops, I almost forgot Love Bites which is a pure power metal band with two ripping lead guitars.
There are two live editions of "DOMINATION": 2020, 2018. Published on the official channel, this version is from the 2020 live.
Currently, there are three BAND-MAID live BLU-RAY (DVD).
at Shinkiba STUDIO COAST in 2017 [1h editing]
at Zepp Tokyo in 2018
at Line Cube Shibuya in 2020
However, other than the 2020 live, 2017 and 2018 are currently out of print, and AMAZON has a premium price for each.

2018 BLU-RAY 49600yen (479.23 $)
Due to Amazon's system, the premium price as a high evaluation for this BAND-MAID is not returned to BAND-MAID, and only the reseller makes a profit.
In other words, the purchase is ridiculous.
ONSET, CROSS, REAL EXISTENCE, uploaded to the official channel are from 2018 live.
However, none of the 2017 TAKEs have been uploaded to the official channel.
There are no signs that they will be sold together at the official channel store, 2017 Live 2018 Live.
The 2017 live includes "PUZZLE" not acoustic, "TAKE ME HIGHER !!", etc., which are often talked about.
The 2018 live includes "DON'T YOU TELL ME", which was the most played on BAND-MAID before being deleted on CZcams, and has a fun battle between guitar and bass.
The two live performances are recorded with the enthusiasm and wonderful performances of a young band riding an updraft.
But now, the praiseworthy live show is about to be buried in the dark.
BAND-MAID has transferred their company, but depending on the situation at that time, there is a risk that those live performances that the previous company owned the copyright will be completely dropped into the darkness.

For the above reasons, it infringes the copyright, but it does not hinder the income of BAND-MAID, and it seems to be morally permissible, so it is uploaded to a Chinese video site that does not have the concept of copyright. Here are the links for the two live videos.

Definitly Freedom and Play next (also the Live version the same as this Concert you have reacted here) they are killing it musicial EVEN MORE on this Songs especially Freedom the Drummer Akane and the Rythmguitarist Kanami 👌🏼 and after hearing Misa (Bass) playing her Bass i could totally understand my friend why he is so bias over the bassist in the band he showed me first that got me into japanese rock music (the band being the GazettE) and i was really bias about the Guitarist in this band but since i've heard Kanami's Solos (and everyone seriously of Band Maid) i was like okay these guys got a serious competition with these women damn they are goood 😍

Band Maid completely changed my otherwise terrible 2020. I discovered them 3 days after Corona Outbreak. And their music really really helped me not to think about the Virus all the Time.

The Album where Yolo is on is my Favorite Band Maid Album. Its called Just Bring It.

More about Band Maiko... 2 years ago, Band Maid announced their end and a new beginning with another purpose, changed their names, costumes, another language (Kioto instead Japanese) and the new band was called Band Maiko. They released a new single called Secret Maiko lips (version for secret lips song) after they said that was an April's fools!!! But everyone liked and they released a mini album 8 songs and a new music called Gion Cho. Now, Band Maiko is declared enemies from Band Maid.

I've seen a few bands live Iron Maiden, Motorhead, Queen, Pink floyd.
Band-maid are on my must see list.
My personal favourites are their live performances (most of their current and back catalogue) Blooming, Choose Me, Bubble, Dice, Play, Onset, Rinne, Domination.
Their music is classed as "Hard rock" but in my opinion they transcend genre and language.
If you want a tear jerker go for "Puzzle and Anemone live" (read the lyrics before listening).
If you want to feel warm I suggest "Smile", "Page", "Glory"
I will stop gushing like some love sick fan boy now. :-D

Unlike Thrill this was written, arranged and produced by them. Miku is highly respected in Japan for lyrics and the music is primarily written by Kanami. All members of the band contribute to creating the final version of the songs.
Next!?!? I suggest Lovebites, another all female Japanese band. A good start would be Shadowmaker, followed with Swan Song.
Seen Band Maid live 3 times and they have to be the best rock band in the world today, but there is a band that is close behind them that also come from Japan. Although they are a side project, they also have someone that maybe one of the best singers in Japan if not the world, and that is Fuki.

Don’t feel bad, I didn’t find Band Maid until a few months ago, who new such incredible talent could not be the biggest band in the world.

Happy New Year Jen! Same gig on their official Channel has "Freedom" which has Akane's actual drum solo. You are about to head down a very very deep pigeon hole as the ladies have a huge repertoire and many styles. They have been invited to play at the Nippon Budokan in Feb. This is one of (the) most prestigious venues in the world. From Cheap Trick, to Zeppelin, etc.
Anyway...
Once upon a time in Japan....
Miku (Who is a 300+ year old pigeon... long story) was in a short lived "idol" band in Japan and ended up working in a "Maid Cafe". She came up with idea to create a rocking band in maid costumes. A "Gap" as its called in appearance to action.
Miku found singer/songwriter Kaname (Lead Guitar and main Composer), who knew Akane - AKA "The Gorilla - she likes bananas a lot! (drums - Jazz and Classically Trained), who knew Misa - AKA the "Barefoot Assassin" (Bass, Jazz and Classically trained).

Putting it together...
It became apparent Mikus voice wasn't really suited to the style and so they decided to go find Lead Vocals and brought in Saiki. This basically put Miku out of a job in the band she created, but instead she adapted and Kaname started teaching her guitar. That's right. She couldn't even play in the first video they did 6 years ago. Now she has a 70-80s style aggressive punk style attack on rhythm and Kaname is constantly expanding her guitar parts in challenging ways. All while singing backup.

Their first actual song they wrote and recorded was "Alone". They have changed label since and have joined a new one now for the new album going into 2021.
Their look, songs, style etc. are their own. Not studio directed.
Pretty cool these days.
Note: Miku is the main lyricist and writes in heavy metaphors that can be interpreted many ways and often confusing in translation. So, they often add parts that audiences of any language can sing along.

Cheered me up watching your enthusiasm and joy at this performance and I got happy too knowing that you will definitely be reacting to more Band-Maid...and Babymetal too, hopefully! There are four other songs from this same concert available on YT but I think the one you want to see is FREEDOM, which has Akane killing a drum solo in the middle. Even back in 2016, Jimmy Page of Led Zeppelin was so impressed with her drumming after watching them perform that he went backstage to get a selfie and tell her how excellent the performance was. I could see the lyrics were resonating with you on this song and I'm sure you'll be dominating the shit out of everything you want to in the new year! Doll Boxx, Scandal and Aldious (all-women bands)offer you something else, but it isn't what Band Maid brings. The drummers for Doll Boxx and Aldious are really really good. The current drummer for Aldious is Marina, Terry Bozio's daughter (he played for Zappa)

Neither Domination or Thrill make my top 30 Band Maid songs.
Which isn't to say they are bad songs, especially Domination, but they have so many great songs, I generally introduce people with Real Existence > Non Fiction Days > Don't you tell ME > Dice > Blooming > Different.
My favourite song changes depending on my mood, currently it's Choose me, but from time to time any of the above 6 or Gion Cho, Onset or Bubble and freedom (live), Play (live), Rock in me, Wonderland (live) and Glory round out the top 15. I could name ten more.... Best Hard Rock band on the planet NO Exceptions.
