I like the handmade seive. It's a great idea using the chicken wire.
You can turn the compost in the dalek style compost bins with a compost aerator , they work really well , and help to speed up composition

Great timing on this. I've got a big compost bin (the first style in your vid) and my problem is exactly what you highlighted - it's hard to turn the compost.
I've been thinking about tumblers for a while and it looks like I should try one out this year.
My other problem is I mostly generate grass cuttings as a lot of my garden is still lawn, so I'm having to buy wood shavings to keep the mix healthy.
2024 might be the year I finally convert all my borders to growing.

I dont know if this might help you but what I used to do is road sweepers used to bag up leaves in clear bags and leave it on the corner to be collected. I used to take them, and this would be most of my brown matter I needed.
That is a handy tip. I actually have a lot of trees out on my street. I might start being the local weirdo and bagging up leaves!
Just over 3 bags worth if you manage to actually fill it. I'd keep the tumbler, but you will need the main pile still if you've got beds to top up every autumn. You could make some quick compost with the tumbler still

I think for the majority of us have a similar problem where space is limited, I ended up buying 2 rolls of chicken wire 10 x 1m and tying the ends together with wire, standing them up like drums, I have one for the compost and one for leaf mulch, quick easy, looking tidy and working so far, easy to turn and get to the good stuff. I haven't seen those tumblers at work before, how often do you turn it and how long does it take to start breaking down?
I turn it once every 3 to 4 days, and I'm in the process of finding how long it takes to break down fully. I'll let you know soon
At my allotment we are thinking about A project were we ask the local community to bring their kitchen waste over to the allotment I have inquired At local shops like Morrisons and some of the other stores and they all have said that they have to make out A chittie and then they put it all in the bin I myself think this is ridiculous has it all can be used to make compost I was wondering if you thought that this project would be a good idea
I think this is a great idea because you're trying to repurpose waste into something that can be used again, I'm all for it. I truly believe (my opinion) that stores don't want people growing their own produce. You might be able to start it just within your allotment area because there might be a lot of damage, fruit/veg, clippings and etc.
@@hackneyfarmer4640 Morrisons is in the Berwick hills area all I can think of is asking local people who live in the area and see what happens all I want is their kitchen waste like egg shells and tea bags or anything like that I've even called into the local cafe in the area no one wants to do it and I can't understand why this is their all complain about the the world is going on
I'll be honest with you if you was a big charity organisation, they would probably say yes so that they can put it in their next newsletter saying "they are working with charities to help reduce waste"
@@hackneyfarmer4640 we are A charity the allotment I go to is in Berwick hills Middlesbrough it's run by A organisation called ground work and we are A couple of people who have problems with depression and we are called men shed we are trying to run the allotment by ourselves and we try and get a donation from people I myself is a key holder so I can Go anytime I want I do all the seeds and the rest of the group come on a Tuesday morning for a few hours each week the stores know this and still won't do anything for us
Found this video really interesting. I make my own compost by using my wormery it doesn’t take up much room as you add trays so it goes upwards saving space. The worms do a great job. I use Tiger worms. 🪱🪱🪱🪱
