I watched MANY anime in my childhood years, but Saint Seiya was definitely the most "epic" of them all.
The fights were long and fast like in Dragon Ball, but they were brutal and violent. Like almost everytime a fight happened, I would get really anxious cuz I never knew if the character was gonna die or survive. Seiya and his friends were always beaten so hard that those fights are easily the most memorable scenes in this series for me.
I think Dragon Ball are empashis on cartoony, while Saint Seiya empashis on drama. And art like Bleach, Naruto, Yugioh and One Piece are close to Saint Seiya

except that, a god cannot be killed, so they are not fighting actual gods, they are fighting surrogates of the gods

Isamu Lucas a surrogate of a god, it's a human body with the god hades power!
***** Nope, bro. The human body that received Hades soul is Shun's. He received it when he was just a baby. That's why, when Shun fought against Sorento, he won the fight with just 1% of cosmo, cause it was Hades cosmo protecting his body from dying.
BUT, later, after Hades left Shun's body, Seiya and Ikki tryed to kill his original and DIVINE body, that one in the coffin, to put an end to all holy wars. It wasn't a surrogate, but the actual Hades, body and soul, who died. Also, gods Thanatos and Hypnos were using their original bodies and died too.
If only producers of this anime were more creative it could be as big as Dragon Ball. Unfortunately they weren't and it's all about Seiya all the time and there are pleeenty of mistakes (like disappearing of steel saints). Don't get me wrong, I love this series especially because of my childhood but could be a lot better :/
This series was aired in our national TV station back in 1990 (or was it 1991?). The greatest animation opening ever! Back when the animation slots on TV were dominated by American series, this anime and this opening came as a great shock, at least for me :)
