Making your own onion powder at home is a very simple project. Homemade onion powder really puts store-bought powder to shame... the taste is much better, there are no fillers, preservatives or other questionable ingredients and it only takes a few dollars worth of onions and a few minutes of time to make.
But beware, once you try it you may never be able to go back to the store-bought version. Like always, homemade is the best!

To remove that strong smell from your grinder use it for dried or stale bread of any type (even gluten free) afterwards-- in other words make bread crumbs in it. It will take away the odor if enough ground in it & your breadcrumbs will be great on top of soup or fish or even chicken.

Home made onion powder from home grown onions is amazing. I make mine using a combination of green onion tops & stored bulbs, dehydrated, and then ground into powder. I used to have a big container of onion powder from Costco. When I tasted my own powder vs. store-bought I immediately dumped the store-bought stuff out. So now I've got a Costco-sized container of delicious home made onion powder. 😋

Nice video . Enjoyed it .
Just a little tip , take a spray bottle and put vinegar and water in it . If the onions are really strong you can use half vinegar and half water . Shake it up and spray on the onions while chopping , slicing etc. spray more vinegar and water mixture as you need it . You won't have any tear's ! My son told me about this tip while I was crying from chopping onions . Works like a charm . Hope this helps . Blessings , Linda

Just a tip: Stainless steel eliminates onion & garlic odor! As you rinse your hands, rub them along the faucet and rinse again; if you've got the smells in your dehydrator, take a stainless steel spoon and rub it all over the tray, then rinse the tray; it should kill the odors fairly quickly.

I am in the UK and use Bicarbonate of soda, which is, I think baking soda in the US to remove smells. Works really well to take away the smell from your trays/blender etc. One teaspoon per pint of warm water. Use it to wash or soak anything that needs deodorising. Thanks for the video, I will give dried onions a go this year .

Try making leek powder. It’s delicious and a bit milder than onion powder. I didn’t like composting all those lovely green tops of the leeks so I washed them well, let them air dry for a while, then snipped them into uniform pieces with a scissors. No crying and so much faster than slicing onions. Dehydrate and powder the same way as in the video. Your house smells wonderful since leeks are not as strong. Delicious in eggs, casseroles, roasts etc.

If you store onions with the root down, the strength will go down to the root, and then cut that root end first you will not cry. I promise
This works. Restaurant used this technique. Or store them cold. The strength is not as strong. Give it a try.

NO CRY METHOD THAT HONESTLY WORKS !!
I was watching Rachel Ray and I NEVER saw her CRY while prepping onions and I begin to pay attention to every little detail... The one thing I noticed, Rachel was forever talking and had her mouth open... Later I read somewhere to do that. When chopping onions, NEVER EVER EVER TAKE EVEN 1 BREATH OF AIR THROUGH YOUR NOSE BUT CONSTANTLY BREATHE THROUGH YOUR MOUTH!!! When you breathe through your nose, it triggers your sinus area which enhaling the strong onion scent triggers your tear glands. I have been doing this for yrs now and IT REALLY REALLY WORKS. I do cut the onion always at the tail end first, NOT the root end but I honestly don't think that matters.... If you slip and take 1 breath through your nose, chances are you'll tear up. PLEASE GIVE THIS A TRY LET ME KNOW BACK HERE... I just keep my mouth open & breathe through it the whole time while messing with onions.

Just toss whole cloves in a food processor and chop them up into pieces like coarse coffee grounds. Put it evenly on dehydrator trays and when it is done, you can use some of it like it is (I love those coarse dry garlic bits, sooooo flavorful in soups/sauces, gives a different flavor than powder, i think. You can also use it in mills) and some of it you can grind into powder... 😊 YUM❣️

So, do you have a way to determine what you will use in a year? I just wonder, b/c for the growing family (mine is too!) it can be really hard to figure out what quantity will be enough :P

Have you ever dehydrated thicker circular pieces of onion to rehydrate and have for fresh onion rings in the winter?
Rehydrating onions is so easy and tastes as good as fresh

did you know that you can dehydrate those peels just make sure they are clean. with a dehydrator nothing should be throwed away. potato, tomato, onion and yes even garlic peel can be dehydrated, lots of nutrients in them the health benefits they actually store lots of antioxidants in their skins. The skins add a slight onion flavor

If you rinse the onions with cold water really well, then it doesn’t burn your eyes anymore!

I don't have a dehydrator, I don't do enough of that stuff to bother with the cost of buying such an appliance, I'd LIKE to grow my own stuff for things like this but..the soil where I live is very rocky and not enough space anyway. I'll have to do it in the oven unless I spring for a super cheap $40 dehydrator in the future

MrYeshuaisyhwh but I have seen these packets in vitamin or supplement bottls. I think it's the same. I also read that it's not poisonous, the packet itself is a choking hazard for childen. Am I wrong on this?

If you burn an unscented candle close to the cutting board, the far end away from you for safety. This inactivates the sulfur compound and you won't cry. If doing a lot of onions I would use 2 candles, one at each far end of the cutting board.

I haven’t cried from cutting onions since I was a little boy. Someone told me it’s because I use a very sharp knife to cut them. I’m not sure if that’s true but it’s true for me

Another reason to store loose onion skins is to boil them and use the water for homemade easter egg dye.

    I have a question for Y’all….
I acquired some one year old organic cow manure(3 yards) for my compost bins. My question is that since it has already broken down for close to a year now would it be considered a brown now as opposed to a green when it’s fresh?? I would have to say it’s 85-90% broken down

I have problems with onions and they burn my eyes for up to an hour. I have learned that if I make the top and bottom cuts under running water...I do not have any or at least very little issues.

Pro tip: If you hold a spoon in your mouth so the inside of the scoop is against your tongue with your mouth closed on the spoon it will reduce/prevent crying.

I put the powder back into the dehydrator just to make sure its completely dry. It's hard to keep my girls supplied in onion and garlic powder. I also do tomatoes, mushroom, bell pepper, and habanero powder the same way.
