- I'm asked often about how to develop a style for painting or drawing. The secret is out there everyone thinks, kinda like Indiana Jones stumbling onto the lost ark... if only they had the map! Well, maybe I can help you to draw your own map and get to where you want to go. As a reward for you subscribers, I'll be drawing a name from the comments and giving the drawing to a lucky Repeater. Woo Hoo!
Art tools used in this video:
Prismacolor Col-Erase Color Pencils, this is a set, but you can buy 'em one at a time if you want: www.amazon.com/Prismacolor-Co...
Canson Sketchbook, they've changed the cover, but it's the same paper: www.amazon.com/Canson-Artist-... - Jak na to + styl
I wanted to let every one of you know that I've just drawn the name for the winner of the 10K giveaway, which is the sketch I did in this video. And the subscriber/commenter whose name was drawn was Barbara Plezia!!!. Congratulations to Barbara! And a huge thank you to all of you who watched, subscribed and commented in hopes of being selected as the winner of this drawing! I'll be doing these drawings along the way as Draw Paint Repeat hits certain subscriber milestones so you will always have another chance down the road!
Why thank you Steve! I am so thrilled to have won the drawing. Thank you!!!! I can’t wait to see it, Barbara.
As a retired 42 year veteran art teacher , I still love learning. AND it’s from your videos that I learn the most and am able to apply most easily to my own work! You’re a master teacher as well as a master artist. I wish I wasn’t limited by my age (75). I just discovered you and still have so much to learn . Thanks for sharing!
Hi Mike! Welcome to the channel and thanks for your kind comments. You've made my day! The thing about being an artist, whether it's a dancer, musician or fine artist is we never stop learning and know it all. Thank you for teaching art to all those aspiring students for all those years!
Out of all of my books, conversations with fellow artists, the CZcams array and 15+ years of struggle, nobody once said, "capture the feeling."
Capture the Light, Symmetry, Pattern... never the feeling.
I am so thrilled that I watched this today. The truest things can be so insultingly simple that they're often overlooked by me.
Hi Amanda, I love your comment, you truly made my day! Draw On!!
Drawing with your left hand tells me you’re in your right mind. 😄 Cannot tell you how much your videos benefits the community, Steve. You’re amazing and have a heart of a teacher.
Aaron, that's such a kind thing to say, I can't thank you enough. I hope these vids get you to pick up a pencil and give yourself a gift that no one can ever take away from you. Like learning to play an instrument, only waaaay cheaper, ha!
Congrats on the 10 K Steve. Another great video with tips to help us understand the process so much better. Keep it up.
I am 66, and during this pandemic, I have been attempting to learn drawing and watercolour. I really appreciate your channel and all of your instructions! Thank you so much.
Talk about a silver lining Leslie-Anne! That's the best thing I've heard all day. Happy Drawing!!
Excellent advice ,and awesome sketch. Congratulations on 10k subs!

Love your videos - thank you so much for sharing. And congratulations on the 10 000.

I love your artwork and thank you for sharing it with all of us.
I enjoyed watching your scene come to life. Thank you for the helpful tips, and the inspiration.
Very inspiring way of showing what you do in Real time - and a very nice way to share your thoughts about how you think in process
Congrats on 10K!!!
Thx for sharing your skills with us. Watching that was beautiful.
Really enjoyed the process and your description...and of course, your humor!
Nice one, Steve! Love your sense of humor in your voice overs.
I enjoyed the concise nature of your video. Great sketch and to the point .
Excellent. Clearly explained with real time example. Thank you
Thank you so much for a great video. Your instructional comments really hit home with some of the problem areas I have when sketching. I do tend to get overwhelmed by the details sometimes and do not consider the overall composition. And I like your style. Thanks again.
Congratulations 10k!
Congrats on 10K subs! Love hearing your thoughts doing a painting or drawing.
I am learning so much from you ! Can’t wait to get out and do some outdoor sketching. Thank you!!
Lots of great drawing information! Thank you, Julie 😍
Wonderful; thanks for giving back so much to your fellow travelers!
That's AWESOME!! I tried to do mountain-ish drawings but I can never get the shading right. Your drawings just make me to try harder and to get better. Thanks.
You're AMAZING!
Another great video. Thanks for these.
love your channel, you have a way of taking the the stress out of drawing.great sense of humor it helps me enjoy drawing practice. thanks
Thank you Kathy, that's so good to hear! Hey, drawing is supposed to be enjoyable. If a sketch doesn't work, no big deal, that's why sketchbooks are more than one page.... grin! Thanks for watching and for being a Repeater!
love your videos! Congrats on 10 k plus subscribers
Thanks for watching Toni and welcome aboard ;0)
Excellent video. I love the free loose feeling of the sketch. I personally always wait 3days between thinking, "I'm done." and beginning to edit and finesse the image. It helps me to look at it as if for the first time, before editing it.
Given me the confidence to sketch again, thank you,
Great Style! Thank you for sharing.
Congrats!!! Oh boy now do I feel better about myself. You are so funny and you crack me up. That is after I took notes on all the tips. You are right about carrying something with us to draw on. All to often I take stuff out of my purse (my husband would say a large tote) and I am always sorry. I have been working on a tote to carry in the car so I can draw or paint in the car. I am just not brave enough to do to the great outdoors by myself. Anyway back to the 10K it will just keep growing and we all will be shocked how quickly. Take care and your winner will be so pleased.
Thanks Essie! You are so so sweet. I'll be doing the sketching kit video soon since this is prime sketching season! And I understand about you not wanting to go out by yourself sooooo, we'll just have to find you a sketching buddy.... hey, how bout hubby? ;0)
Draw Paint Repeat hubby is a tennis player, that happens several times a week. My husband is not one to sit still, not sure it would work out. But maybe one day...
Your channel (literally) rocks! :D
Congrats on 10K! And a very nice sketch.
Thank you Grafight23 (great name btw!)!! Good luck!
Very helpful demonstration. I enjoy your pleasant, positive manner. It was particularly interesting to have you draw Johnson Arch, just a short distance from my home. I look forward to more videos in the coming months.
Terrific sketch! I will keep in mind your tip about creating spaces to allow the viewers’s eye to rest.
This is amazing! Your videos always make me feel so relaxed and inspired to sketch in my sketchbook. Congratulations on the 10K, onwards and upwards to 20K 😊

Thanks - love your advice on not getting to the details - but getting to the shapes. And also not being a slave to the picture we see. Thanks!

Thanks Thomas! I've got my kits pulled out and am trying to figure out the best way to film 'em... won't be too long though!
Very informative. I love drawing.
I just found your videos and watched this one. Even though there is no actual painting demonstrated, it is encouraging me to try my hand at painting.
Also I liked that you explained about pencil grip. Few artists talk about that.
I'm looking forward to viewing your library of videos and future videos.
Thanks Chantilly Cat, I'm glad to hear you found it helpful. Hopefully I have some other videos that will help you too... and I'm posting new ones all the time. Welcome!

Hi Steve! Thanks for your compliment. I'm so glad that my love of drawing and painting comes across on the video. Beautiful and thank you for sharing your talent.
Hiya Tweetie! You're welcome, and thank you for watching... I hope it helps with your sketching!
Thank you. I live in desert area and often get overwhelmed trying to get all the details in canyon walls and other well rock formations. Starting with just basic shapes always sounded easy, but wasn't. Watching you do it has helped me feel that I might be able to tackle them again.
Hi Jana, IKR?!? It sounds easy when we get told to simplify, but when we sit down to do it, it takes some time to let it sink in. I hope you get out there and give it another try, the desert is sooo beautiful in its own way. Draw On!
Just found your channel and love, love, love your sketch of Johnson's Arch. Now, I need to check out your previous videos. :)
Welcome Judy! Thanks for wandering into our corner of ArtTube! I hope you find other videos that you find helpful. I try to post one about every week... give or take =0)
