Māori king in Nuku’alofa for funeral of Tongan queen mother

  • The Māori king Tuheitia is in Nuku'alofa, Tonga for the traditional funeral of Tongan queen mother Halaevalu Mata'aho. It began with hundreds of men carrying her casket on a platform through streets to the royal tombs.
    Flags are at half-mast in the city with decorations in the mourning colours of black and purple. Today's also been made a public holiday for Tongans. The much loved matriarch's body arrived on the island yesterday from Auckland where she died last weekend.
