As a professional auto painter..i must say you did a great job with the rattle can. Next time buy the can adapter the works like a trigger...saves on finger pain.

Haha, I painted my 90 LX a baby shit green, kinda a pea green, the guy at the store messed up mixing it, showed me, I said yea, I kinda like that, got it for 1/2 price, the guy got fired when the store found out he was the one that mixed that hideous color, I liked it, many people didn’t though. I did this to my '77 mavrick guys across the street were doing a roof and came by to ask me to paint there old dump truck. I used a deep blue and white for racing stripes about 12 cans of blue and 2 cans of white and about 5 cans of clear looked like a pro paint job. You would be impressed what you can do if you take your time and do it right.

I’ve watched this video three times over the past two years and I enjoy it every time.
I mean, I'd probably never be bold enough to try this, but I gotta say I appreciate videos like this where people actually use everyday tools, even down to the newspaper and towels covering the wheels :P ....instead of some dude posting a vid with a title like "easy paint job, anyone can do it" but you click on it and he's like here I am in my professional paint shop with $10,000 worth of equipment!!!

Only when.you're cars paint is fucked and you are poor and love you're car do you try this, skill is required in laying the paint on. Lol. A lot of skill, skill that takes years to learn in employment,

It will fade and look satin over time used same paint 4 years ago on old chevy pickup and looked good for a year but fades unless re done yearly and hurts resale too personly idk cause fuck it it's a $ 700 TRUCK

I paint for a living but I can humble myself enough to understand diy jobs like this. People enjoy projects they can do themselves and like you said, not going for flawless results and spending thousands on it. The only time it does upset me is when someone comes in after they screwed up and want it fixed for half price because it’s already “prepped” lol.
have to give you respect mate i was a car painter resto and show for 30yrs and know the time i used to put in to paint with all the up to date equipment at hand $$$$$ but not everyone can afford to have a big dollar paint job, your an inspiration for those people to give it a go plus you may even influence younger people to try it and may enjoy it and end up seeking a career as a painter in a shop somewhere learning the trade

Yea thats the fastest way for it to chip lol. In the 2 months i had it painted this color it didn't chip or fade and i put it through HELL! Winter storms/ice, Dirt road drifting and it was a driveway queen so it was always in the elements. For a temporary paint job it could have lasted MUCH longer but i had plans to make it how it is now., Check my newer videos for a update on it.
@@JamesDguy You sanded it with 320 and then painted over that? It looks really glassy. Does the rustoleum lay on thick and flatten out like that? I prime everything and then sand to 800, because I heard anything lower grit will change the paint texture perceptibly (and I'm new to this). What's the rule to get these results?
@@JamesDguy i painted door of my cheap truck with spray paint. Did same thing with prepping, sanding, primer and all that. Turned out well...it was 10 years ago and paint still on there lol. It shitty and rough now.but still there. Also i have never waxed it and it was kept outside the whole time.didnt even shoot clear over it lol

I was going to tell you to always start at the top and work your way down, so overspray doesn't settle on the work you have already done, but you worked so fast that it all blended anyway. GREAT JOB! Yours looks better than many others I've seen today.

Nice. I appreciate that you edited the entire process down to 8 minutes or so. Some folks will take 8 minutes to tell you the best way to tilt your lawn mower for servicing.
This paint job will be getting wet sanded eventually and reshot another coat in the future with a clear over it. The point of this video is just to demonstrate it can be done cheap and it can last a long time. I have a car going on 4 years with no chips or fade using the same paint different color..

James D guy rustoleum acrylic lacquer crystal clear clear coat would be the best bet man. Just wanna help you out
That's because it's Rustoleum. Rustoleum is consistent, priced right, and looks great. I painted the lower half of an OMC outdrive with Rustoleum in the mid-90's. After polishing, you couldn't even tell the difference between where the factory paint ended and the Rustoleum paint job started.

Hey man, I did the same thing to my old car and it turned out AMAZING. I actually skipped the sanding part because my paint is so bad, I just wanted improvement, but I used the same stuff as you did! It is definitely trial and error because I messed up the trunk but sanded it off and it turned out amazing. I used literally 6 cans for my car and I've turned an old junker into something nearly new. Thanks for the video!
Hey just now seeing this and am thinking about doing this to my car. How has the paint job held up? I mean for $40 and a days work it lasts 6 month it'd be worth it, so I'll prob end up doing it. But either way would be nice to know before trial and error how it holds up.

i started airbrushing with scrapped plastic panel from scooter. we had a small shop that would modify moped and he had plenty laying around
Buy a harbor freight spray gun. Mix paint with thinner and you can spray your car super fast and slick.

I used to beat myself up attempting to paint cars out of can's like this. Yeah, its totally possible to do this and you have done it. But the day I finally decided to use a paint gun and proper materials I realized that doing a car out of spray can's isn't worth it. You can buy that same rustoleum paint in a regular can for $15 at tractor supply. do an 8-4-1 mix and get way more paint for the money, and do the job better and faster out of an HVLP gun. Sure, you have to find a compressor, and buy the gun, but after a couple small jobs it pays for itself. and having a compressor around is good for other things.
What is 8 4 1 mix? Thanks much
8 parts paint, 4 parts thinner, 1 part hardner. so for example, if you start with 8oz paint you would add 4oz thinner, and 1oz hardner, mix and put in the gun. you can multiply this to match whatever amount of paint you want to shoot. so if you started with 16oz paint you would add 8oz thinner and 2oz hardner. or 4oz paint, 2oz thinner, .5 oz hardner. the last one is the lowest I would go because its difficult to eyeball less than half an oz accurately- at least on the cups I have.

I can’t wait to try this. I’ve had a camper van project for a few years where the last owner used a paint roller to roll brown and black paint on. I’m going to change the whole van to pine green, black front fenders and hood, with a checkerboard pattern across the roof. Wish me luck 😂

Your a Rustoleum spray can paint savage and that color is awesome and want to paint my 2000 Honda Civic Hatch this color. It came out really good. Very impressed. Keep the videos coming and you definitely know what you're doing.

i painted my Kawasaki ZX-7R superbike with a can of PJ1 Kawasaki green, alpine white and flat black spray paint.
it looked amazing! perfectly smooth, flat and no imperfections at all.
the only part painted green was the upper fairing extending partially to the lower fairing.
the largest area was the white covering 90% of the lower fairings and tail section and it turned out perfect as well.
the black was just for narrow accent stripes, a border around the number plate on the tail section and a small area at the bottom of the belly pan for all the white sponsor logo decals. i clear coated everything as well.
it truly looked professionally painted.
a nice paint job can be done by spray can if you properly prepare the surface and take your time.
as can clearly be seen by your car! sweet!
You can rock that color in Japan, they are all about bright colors.

dude that looks super good. good work. if you hadn't filmed it, i wouldn't have believed you did it at home with a rattle can. thumbs up man. here in canada we have stuff called tremclad and its also rust paint , really thick and shiny, dries slow but dries into a nice durable shiny finish. i used rust paint on my subframe and engine mounts and they turned out really nice and shiny.

Great job, I'm impressed with your results. If you would hit it with some 2K clear spray bombs, then wet sand and buff it. No one would believe its was a rattle can paint job even if you told them it was.
Painted my cj7 with rustolium 2x, and it turned out great!! Used implement paint on the inside of the tub (with a paint brush, it’s self leveling,tough, and cheap) ford an implement, and rustolium 2x apple red are an exact match!

I've been spray painting cars for years and do a good enough job I've had friends ask me to do theirs. it takes time to look good but it's more than possible and you can change it up often it's really the best

I painted my Harley with approximately 18 oz. of Rust Oleum Gloss White Enamel with a harbor freight $14.00 gravity sprayer with my compressor. I saved myself $2000.00 doing it myself rather than taking it to a painter.
Proper prep and a little hard work goes a very long way.
