12-year-old boy struck and killed walking home from school in South Los Angeles

- A family is devastated after a 12-year-old boy was struck and killed while walking home from school in South Los Angeles. On April 18, Derrick Serrano, 12, was walking when he crossed the street near Vernon and Wadsworth Avenues at around 3 p.m.
That’s when a driver struck and killed the boy. His mother, Claudia Gramajo, believes the deadly crash could’ve been prevented if proper safety measures had been in place. Serrano was a 6th grader at Carver Middle School located in the South Park neighborhood of Los Angeles.
He takes a short walk back home, but one that navigates heavily congested roads and intersections and is noticeably devoid of any crosswalks, signs or safety signals to protect students.

I know right there's elementary schools where we are in Texas, and they know and we have them crosswalks everywhere, and even high schools have them too, with a button that you can press to see the light will turn green for you to cross. But it's sad to see that Los Angeles doesn't care. 😢
A school zone with no speed bump, no crosswalk, no foot bridge, no cameras, not even a crossing guard… whoever runs that district should be ashamed. RIP to that young boy, I hope changes are made in honor of him ❤️

I wrongly assumed that all intersections near schools have crosswalks, signage and a crossing guard in LA. In Ventura County we sure do. These safety measures need to be enacted statewide and also maybe a slower speed limit through that area. My heart goes out to the boy’s family. No one should have to experience the death of a child. 😞

A lot of drivers don’t care about the crosswalks or crossing guards when they’re running late or in a rush. Streets need to be redesigned and enforcement applied.
There's crossing guards everywhere in Long beach too. California law already states that the max speed limit in a school zone is 25mph.

I’ve been noticing all these kids walking home from school. And I’m thinking. Since when is this ever ok? I see little girls walking next to busy streets and highways and intersections while carrying their back backs? Did parents become so trusting? Does the school system suck that they just let kids walk home with nothing to worry about? I’m glad I have no kids but for those with kids. How do you manage? Do you not ever have this thought on your mind when your kids leave school?

I went to that school as a kid in early 2000s, no crossing guards then either. South LA was and continues to be underserved and under-prioritized in road safety initiatives. That there are no crossing guards, no crosswalks, no signage today, 20+ YEARS LATER, is completely unacceptable.

My son just turned 12 on Monday..so this really hits me hard. 😢 I’m sorry for your loss. 💐 This is one of the many reasons why I pick up and drop off my children at school. There’s too many potential hazards like this. I hope you invest your time and effort to make sure your other children get to school safely. If you don’t drive or have a car, just walking with them as a chaperone would make a lot of difference.

There's a little 10 year old girl that walks to school and back home by herself. She's always on FaceTime when she does but it's heartbreaking. I used to keep an eye on her when I had the chance when I pick up my kids.
I walked home from school in 2nd grade... always crossed at corners though and always made sure it was clear and there weren't gang bangers driving at high speed.
Kids in Japan, the Netherlands and any other developed country walk from home to school alone and knowing how to use public transportation. The problem is that America coddles it's children too much.

Sorry but thats too young to be walking by himself. Parents dont let your children walk period pick up and drop if possible, teach them to look back & fourth . I dont know how many times i see teenagers cross the street without looking before they cross , wen working in school invironment. Plx be vigilant teach them , we live in evil times now . I have to agree, these days there are too many predators out there, no child is safe walking to and from school. I miss the days of school buses and crosswalks with crossing guards.

It isn’t too young if people would slow the F down. Whole families get taken out in this area. Pedestrians are hit on a weekly, sometimes daily basis. They are redesigning PCH around Malibu after some college girls got hit. Why not around a school? This man is right. Most schools have speed bumps cross walks with lights and crossing guards. People in LA refuse to slow the F down!
I am very VERY sorry for this family's loss 🌹🌹🌹🌹. He was a precious boy. But on a more positive note, I am very VERY glad driver did NOT RUN! That in itself, is a huge blessing in disguise. I "hope" the city does the necessary improvements to help make this intersection more SAFE. -🍀🍀

The person stayed at the scene…this was a tragic accident. There was no crosswalk and the person wasn't speeding...complete tragedy all the way around. Pray for everyone involved.

I live across the street from an elementary school in South LA and it has NO left turn arrow. There have been so many accidents and the city doesnt care. Its pathetic!
From what I heard was there only crossing guards at Elementary schools. These kids might be in middle school but they can’t think for themselves fully. They still need adult supervision. R.I.P Derrick. We all miss you at Carver.
1:32 there is the problem only the lateral street has the stop sign which means that the child should have been instructed to never cross the road laterally which needs traversing those four lanes . Only an experienced or observant adult should cross those four lanes. Too many pedestrians are killed because they are not observant of the intersection features .
