- Today we gonna do a little Metal Art behind the scenes! I wanted to do an episode on how to engrave metal, as I get a lot of comments on this phase of my metal art. This is a STRANGE episode, as I filmed it WEEKS ago, and have already put out the art piece last week on my channel, if you haven't seen it, check it here • A NEW Art Technique! A...

Getting the flex shaft attachment is a life saver. I'm a wood carver and it has helped out tremendously and helps out with getting those accurate detail cuts that you can't quite get while holding the actual dremel in your hand.
Thanks Dusty: another great video. Really appreciate your channel as I’m new to TIG and all your pointers have been so helpful.
Awesome! Happy I can provide some value! The beginner struggle is real... but fun!
Great points on how to etch. I always enjoy watching your videos, and you, young man have some very nice skills! Keep up the great work, and stay kind Dusty!
Glenn thank ! I appreciate the kind words and you checking the episodes out🙏 Especially the ‘art’ ones. They don’t appeal to all welders, but they’re my favourite ones I’m passionate about. So I thank you for checking it out!💪
I’m a current welding student (2 weeks to go!) I wish I found this guy months ago, awesome videos. PATW should have way more subscribers, keep at it! I’m sticking with this channel, it’ll grow exponentially.
Oh my god dude! That first piece of art on that giant panel is incredible!!!! So amazing. The amount of hours you must have spent learning how to make and then make that art must be in the thousands of hours. Incredibly good.
That weird shaped one u mentioned is great for making curved lines or circles. You use it on laying almost flat on its side so the end of it is touching the material like a wheels. It's the best bit in the set for making nice crisp curves without coming off your line.
Another great video Dusty. Great tip on paying attention to the rotation of the bit and which side of the line to put the straight edge/fence.
I only know because I’ve made that mistake before 😂😂
@@PacificArcTigWelding well thank you for helping us learn from your mistakes. I know I've learned from plenty of my own. And it's definitely less painful to learn from others mistakes.
Very interesting tips. I saw the episode of the finished piece but somehow missed this one. 👍👍😎👍👍
just different type of settings and techniques for autobody work.... I'm working on a 71' C-10 and I need to figure out how to set up my welder to tiq weld in some panels.... so I guess Butt welds and how to tig thin(20 ga) without being able to put a chiller on the back side of the panel.... Thanks for the awesomeness!!!! It's people like you that make youtube worth watching.... Gives us the "How To" and all we need is the "Will to" do it.... Blessings brother!!!!
Ok awesome man. I’ll see what I can come up with as far as material, this one would be a good basic episode. Keep checking in with me🍻 Thanks for the suggestion
Excellent and beautiful art!! This is really inspiring, I could learn a lot from your channel! My dad got me an engraving pen for Christmas. I've always wanted to engrave and then paint on a metal sheet. But I sort of don't know where to begin! I have so many ideas, but ideas are only ideas until they come into fruition!
I'm loving the geometric, rigid, structured style you've got in combination with whimsical patters and colors. Beautiful work!
Really great Dusty,I really enjoyed watching this💯💯💯💯💯
Thanks Ryan! More of just a hangout episode- but I enjoy these ones a lot 🙏🙏🙏
the bendy thing that goes on the end is called a flex shaft and i cant stress this enough YOU NEED ONE. it is so much easier to control and do fine stuff it will last you forever and is a must have. nice work btw man
Awesome video Dusty. Weird timing. I just rebuilt the collet lock button on my dremel to bring it back to life, it’s so old that it’s the 300 series - which assumedly became the 3000. It’ll run another 20 years now 😎 They just don’t die!
Great tip on paying attention to spin direction.
I scope out that flex shaft stylus extension every time I’m in Home Depot... $29 bucks here stateside. Someday...
Thanks for the vid. #talent
Great tip on the straight edge roll.
Looks good. I have a Dremel with the extended drive shaft . It’s about 36in. Long and makes it feel like your holding a magic marker. Works really well. Thanks for the video.i always enjoy. LARRYMOORE
Great. Thanks Larry! I’ll be getting one for sure!:)
Top video dusty, I haven't had a go with the diamond bit's yet, I love my dremel gear I've just got a new flexible shaft 😁👌
Well you don’t gotta pay for your gear ;) Kidding bro. I’m stoked to try the fancy stuff!
😂👊 You got me. Start using #sharemydremel on your posts, they approached me, but if you message @dremel I'm sure they'd be interested in you work my friend 😉👍
I swear you must have the patience of a saint when it comes to engraving all the dots-on-a-grid, Dusty :) Nice video though - I love these "hang out" videos, as you called them
Your artwork is amazing. What size and thickness stainless plate are you using? Did you weld it all the way around to keep it from warping? And do you polish off that discoloration somehow before you start the art project?
Great video! Thx
I’ve had different Dremels for the past 30 years and never til now knew about the flex attachment. Sounded pricey til I looked them up and, there only $35😃
Dude I had one of those extendable precision engraving arms it was freaking awesome! While it lasted lol Just make sure there isn't too much friction from the angle on the cord running from the dremmel. Lol it can actually melt right through from the spinning Speeds. Yeah that totally sucked because it was so awesome and so much more comfortable and precise. Definitely going to have to get another one. You had a good idea mounting it above where you're going to be working. I had mine hanging on the table leg which is why there was so much tension. Anyway, gna finish watching lol
Awesome. Good tips man. I’m stoked to Try one of those for sure!🙏💪
Beastly man! Is the Dremel 3000 available in Canada?
Ohhhhhh yeah dude. Dope little unit!
@@PacificArcTigWelding the dremel stylo is great for detail engraving. I find it easier for detail stuff rather than a foredom

Dude I'm really liking your channel. Glad I ran across it!
Will thank you! Happy you enjoy! I appreciate you checking it out!
@@PacificArcTigWelding I tried a little last night on aluminum... Do you do any pictures on aluminum or just mainly stainless? I wasn't thrilled about how mine turned out lol.
Haha all good. It’s a process of learning.... stick with it:) I DO do art on aluminum- I’ve been practicing and learning technique on how to do it on the DL for a couple months now to see how I can make a piece that works as best as I can. I’m actually starting my first one this week that I’ll film! Keep an eye out and wish me luck!😂🙏
Can you do a demo some time on how to tig a pipe onto the side of another at a 45 degree angle. How do you get inside the angle to do a nice weld. Thanks
Good video as always!!!
what thickness of steel do you usually use?
Hey Ruben! This one was 3mm, I’ve done thicker, but been using this stuff lately:) I really enjoy welding on it!
If you're going to get a flex shaft for your dremel try mounting it from an old iv stand or coat tree so the shaft follows your left arm being your a lefty, good luck I enjoy your videos.😎😎
Very well explained. I just bought the Drumel 3000. I'm gonna be etching a composite aluminum/plastic panel. In doing a test, I realized I went perhaps too deep and exposed the plastic. Right now it doesn't seem to be a problem because the color of the plastic is dark and creates contrast to the metal. This work is going to have paint, screws and some other sculptural elements. You said yours will include paint so my question is do you think it's important to gesso the panel before painting it, or will scruffing it up be sufficient?
How do u transfer an image to the metal before the engraving stage?
Hey bro ide like to get a peice of stainless all layed out and engraved by you so i can weld it is that a possibility?
U should try and do a sk8board related piece that would b sik ! Keep it up man ,ur super talented n stay free bro
How do you clean up the metal particles when you are done? I can see that engraving can be toxic.
What tungsten you mostly use. Where to buy?
LayZr tungsten or lanthanated:) I get all my stuff like that from Ck worldwide
Hey Dusty!!
Hey Luc! Hope you are well my friend!
cheers dusty 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻🙏🏻🇦🇺
What speed?
Sooooo, the extendo thingy is called a flex shaft. I have both the dremel, and foredom flex shaft. Was hoping you were going to show how to do engraving. As opposed to scoring. Nice work still
Don’t buy a Dremel! Look on eBay for a used dental lab micro motor. They, and the jewellery sector equivalent, are a bit pricey new but a used one makes sense. You can use diamond tipped or tungsten carbide tipped burrs and hold the handpiece like a pen in one hand- proper control- not the two handed Dremel grappling you see here. I inscribe legible handwriting at maybe 10 point in all kinds of metal, it’s so easy!
Great marking out vid though!
Awesome. I’ll check that out for sure:) thanks for the heads up🙏
Respirators have to be kept in a sealed plastic bag, with the air squeezed out. Otherwise the simple air movement around it, even if in a drawer, uses the filter up, so when it’s actually used, it’s not doing its job.
Good idea with the straightedge. I haven’t done that.
